Deadliest Catch

Am I the only crab catchin' addict?

hollym 04-08-2009 09:56 AM

Heck no. I wait all year for a new season of Deadliest Catch. That is one of my favorite shows. I am completely addicted to it. I have watched every season so far. Have you ever watched After the Catch where the captains all sit around in a bar with the host Mike Rowe and talk about the season and their lives? That is really cool, too.

My favorite crew is on the Northwestern. I just love Edgar Hanson. He is such a nut. His brother is such a smart *****, too. I also really like Phil Harris, but his sons get on my nerves sometimes. I really love the Time Bandit guys, too. Oh heck, I think I love them all.

I love the pranks they all play on each other. The best ones are when one boat messes with another boat like when they attached a truck to one of the Cornelia Marie's buoys. Someone also did that with an outhouse, but I don't remember who did it.

Great show with crazy, bad to the bone, hard working guys. Their whole way of life is mindblowing. I'd better go make sure the TiVO knows a new season is beginning.

hollym 04-08-2009 10:38 AM

Dang it! Now, I'm suddenly craving some crab legs with old bay seasoning and drawn butter with a side of crab cakes!!!

braingonebad 04-09-2009 08:00 AM

LOL! The outhouse episode!

They just had a recap of the one where Edgar made a dummy and dropped it down the wheel house window.

:p

Sig knew it wasn't a real person, though, cuz the legs were all tangled when it slid down. He should have played along. I said to dd that Sig should have yelled "Help him, Edgar! You can't let him drown, knowing he's really the father of your kids!"

I love those two.

Remember the flour bag bomb?

My fave After the Catch was when they were talking about their superstitions.

And Cap't Phil..... I wonder what happens with him? Crazy he lived through a pulminary embolism, tough ol' goat!

Curious 04-09-2009 08:35 AM

Hey Brain..our very own Steve on the PD forum was a real life fisherman. A crabber. He has some wonderful pictures and stories.

I'll have to give him a link to this thread.

hollym 04-09-2009 03:56 PM

Yup Phil is a tough old dude, huh? Also very blessed. Their superstitions are a big part of the show. Especially with the Hansons and I think it is Phil that won't leave port on a Friday. Sig is always talking about bad juju. They are a wild bunch and I can hardly wait for another season.

Cool!

I also have a friend (w/ms) who works in a refinery - another of the top 5 most dangerous jobs.

I'm trying to decide if my most dangerous job was the dairy farm or the bakery. I once had to catch a loose bull - I was 13 and 75 lbs.

But then again, all those donuts!

:o

hollym 04-10-2009 02:54 PM

I hope Steve finds his way over here. I would be very interested in his life as a crabber and his perspective on the show!

stevem53 04-11-2009 06:05 AM

Hi..My name is Steve, and I am a real fisherman..I'll be signing autographs in the foyer http://www.rumblevillains.com/images/smilies/roflmao

A little humor there folks..As April is Parkinsons awareness month, April is now, thanks to the Deadliest Catch crew, Fishermans month..I have had Parkinsons for about 6 years now..I have been a fisherman for 34 years, and still fish part time..My primary purpose for fishing was never money..It was for love..Fishing is a way of life for those who have made it a life long occupation..As you can see on Deadliest Catch everyday is a new adventure, and that is the addiction that keeps us fishing forever..I wasnt a crab fisherman, I was a trawler fisherman, a dragger..I had a 47' wooden dragger that I sold in 2006 due to worsening Parkinsons symptoms..I now have a 19' fiberglass boat that I go shellfishing with

I met Capt Phil, and Capt Jonathan at the New Bedford Waterfront Festival in Sept of 2007, and got to chat with them briefly..Great down to earth friendly guys!!

If anyone has any questions about fishing, more than likely I can gladly answer them

Imma "Catchhead" too! I never miss an episode.
Jonathan and his sons were on Larry King last night. I'm looking forward to the new season!

My ex is a diver and spent many years diving for sea urchins, scallops and groundfishing off the coast of Maine. It was dangerous work and very worrisome when he didn't come home on time. There were many winter evenings spent waiting for the boats to return! I dove with him a few times, just to see what he did and I can tell you it's dark and scary and cold down there!

Steve- I spent many years in the SE Mass/RI area.
I sure do miss the Portuguese food and the shore down there!

It must have been hard to give up the dragger and settle into a quieter lifestyle. I moved from SE Mass to live and work in Maine as a whitewater guide and I've quieted down a lot too, but still hang onto my guide's license and do some boating on the rivers here in Maine and on vacation to warmer climates!

I live very close to the coast now and I don't think I could ever live inland- gotta be within driving distance of the ocean! :)

Niec to meet you, and a fellow groundfisherman at that..It was hard to give up the boat, and I made damn sure I wasnt at the marina to watch her sail away

About a month ago, I had a lady visiting with me from Seattle who also as Parkinsons, and she wanted to see Cape Cod before she went back home, so we spend a day down there..The guy who bought my boat was from Wellfleet, and when we got into Wellfleet I saw a sign that said ""Wellfleet Town Dock"..Im sitting at the light thinking...Hmmmm..I wonder?..So when the light turneed green, I took a left and went looking for the town dock..And low and behold, there she was, tied up over there..I got very emotional, and it caught me by surprise..You can sell a boat, but you cant erase the memories, and the camaraderie, and the brotherhood I shared with my fellow fishermen..As you know, go down to any fishermans dock, and you will find a colorful cast of characters that you will never forget, that do some of the most comical things you can imagine..Some out of necessity, and others cuz its just plain the way they are..There was this one guy who probably invented the word "frugal"..He would pick something out of the trash and make it work for years..Me..I always bought brand new stuff, and Jimmy's junk would out last my new stuff..One time he had a vibration in the shaft, and he loosened all the motor mount bolts, started up the engine, and put her in gear, an drove wedges underneath the motor mounts until the vibration stopped, got some shims and bolted it back down..Only he could get away with something like that!! http://www.rumblevillains.com/images/smilies/roflmao

:hug:Steve, I'm so glad you joined us here.

I get the first autograph for inviting you. :D

hollym 04-12-2009 08:45 AM

Thank you for coming over, Steve. I am happy to meet you.

I grew up on the Oregon coast and I knew many fishermen - most were trawlers there, like you. I think that is one reason I identify with the crabbers on the show, they remind me of people I knew and seeing the boats in the harbor brings back memories.

I am so jealous that you met Capt Phil and Jonathan. They are cool guys! I remember the episode where the Hillstrand brothers took their boat over by where they buried their dad and saluted him. That was so touching! I also love how Jonathan and Andy switch off captain duties, but I forget which one does king crab and which one does opies.

DAY1 04-12-2009 09:17 AM

My hubby and I wait all year for the new episodes to come on.
I hate the night it's on though. This past Tuesday I had to choose between NCIS, Biggest Loser and Deadliest catch. They were all on at the same time.

Luckily I was able to see Deadliest Catch later that night.

BTW, Phil is my favorite.

DAY

MooseasaurusRex 04-13-2009 12:34 AM

No. Nonono.

No!

Here I was going to start a thread on 'the other reality TV shows'. :D

Just saw commercials for my brand of reality TV. Dangerous Catch starts a new season this week on Discovery and Axe Men on the History Channel. Love these shows! Even though I'm not a big fan of eating crabs... or getting splinters from firewood.

These 2 shows cut through the soap opera aftertaste of the other ones. If these guys make a mistake they don't get voted off an island or can't get a record deal.

They get fired and have to find another way to support their family or worse yet, killed.

Ice Road Truckers is another good one but it's done for the year.

Yes..I remember that episode..Very touching!!..Those are exactly the kinds of memories I talked about in my post, where you cant erase the memories, the camaraderie, or the brotherhood

Curious 04-13-2009 06:27 AM

So Steve...how many can you new boat hold? :D

What's the longest you were ever out to sea?

My new boat holds about three people comfortably

The longest Ive ever been out to sea was two weeks

I used to be a deck hand on a Tuna Seiner out of Fairhaven Ma, from 1978-1980 and we would roam the ocean for schools of tuna from The Outer Banks of North Carolina to Cape Cod Bay..We would begin the season in June, and end around November..When we were fishing schoolies, 30 lb to 200 lb tunas we never knew when we were coming home when we left the dock..We caught them with a huge net that was a half mile long, and 240' feet deep..It had rings every so many fathoms on the bottom of the net, that a cable ran through to "purse" the net up..We would surround the whole school of fish, and if they didnt escape before we got the net pursed up, we had them..Here is a picture of my new boat, and some pictures of tuna fishing

http://i43.tinypic.com/szwqag.jpg

This picture below is a tuna seiner in Long Island Sound

http://i42.tinypic.com/2iiy54p.jpg

Me throwing a tuna in an almost full fish hold..(100 tons)

http://i40.tinypic.com/ohr9dj.jpg

Setting the net..The seine skiff has one the end of the net, and holds tension on its end so we can make the long circle around the school of fish..Notice the cable going into the water..It is attached to the seine skiff, and when we complete the set, we start hauling back on both ends of that long cable, that goes through all the rings attached to the bottom of the net, and it closes the bottom of the net like the draw strings on a womans purse..The top of the net has styrofoam corks every so many feet, to keep the top of the net floating

hollym 04-13-2009 08:32 AM

Yum, tuna!!

Curious 04-13-2009 08:40 AM

Steve, you make it so much more real than watching a tv show. It really adds to it.

I never realized the nets where so huge. Or that a tuna could be 200lbs.

Have you named your new boat?

I love all those pictures. Thank you for sharing.

braingonebad 04-13-2009 12:20 PM

Steve - Nice to meet you! Thanks for the amazing pics. Very cool!

So, you can go out in the ocean with the new boat? you can take ones like that out on the lake (Erie) but only on a good day. Erie gets pretty choppy, because it's so shallow. But on a good day, you can go about anywhere - the islands, the intake, etc.

We used to rent a boat and walleye fish all day, catch the limit. (I think it was 6 per person?)

That was years ago though. The fish are still there but I don't think the boat rentals are.

DINNER!!! :D

For an army.

braingonebad 04-14-2009 01:21 PM

WOW! Thanks for the vidoes! So beautiful!

Steve, I sat thinking about your story, telling dh, and it brought me to tears thinking how hard that had to be for you to give up your boat. And then to go see her again. I'm glad that you did though (go see her, I mean, one more time).

I'm so sorry.

I'm happy for you that you had all of that while you had it though. Too many people never ever live the dream, you know?

How freakin cool that you did.

And not to jinx meself, but dh got an email that they are *considering* him for that Satsuma bridge job! YEAH! so keep your fingers crossed for us, please.

I may be asking questions about those fiberglass boats soon lol. The house I'm looking at has a dock on a canal right off the St. John's River. I need to learn how to shrimp and crab without getting a smack down from that giant manatee and the local manta ray.

:D

Oh, and the name of the road it's on is my maiden name - talk about good juju!

Deadliest Catch ~ Feat. Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive

Curious 04-16-2009 04:21 PM

The Hillstrand brothers have a book out. I saw them on TV. It's called Time Bandit. I'm going to have to read it. :D

braingonebad 04-16-2009 09:29 PM

No way! I'll check that out after I move.

;)

I'm going to Florida!

:)

He got the job!

Curious 04-16-2009 09:41 PM

That is AWESOME Brain!! Warm weather...No snow..YIPPEE!!!

Might not be crabbers you'll get to see up close...but fishermen! :D

I did find the book on Barnes and Nobles website, but I bet Amazon has it too. Good reading for a long car ride...

Grizabella 04-16-2009 09:57 PM

My youngest daughter and I have watched Deadliest Catch together every season it's been on till now. Now she lives in Vancouver and I'll miss watching it with her. It was a family thing we did.

I'm raising her two kids (long story, she's doing well now and has the kids with her for vacations and such but had a hard time getting her life together for a lot of years) and with the kids I watch American Idol every season and they humor me by watching Dancing With the Stars with me.

I really love Ice Road Truckers for some reason. I never miss a season on that. And Ax Men and there's another logging show I can't think of----oh, Extreme Loggers where they long with horses. I like those, too, but my father and grandfather and two husbands were loggers and logging truckers so that's kind of ordinary to me, but I'd like to buy the DVD's for the kids and grandkids to see.

There's at least one crab boat that goes by the bridge where dh will be working. Not like DC by any means, but still... they do crab down there.

My nephew has a boat and goes shark fishing down by the keys. Yikes. I don't know if I'm ready for that.

braingonebad 04-22-2009 01:48 PM

Well, last week Capt Keith hit his head on the hull of his boat. Last night, it seemed like he shook that off pretty well. He's got a thick skull....I wonder if we're related?

:p

Very sad show though, that cod ship went down.

Yeah, but the way the promos were shot, they made it look like The Wizard was the boat going down. At least that's the impression I got. I ended up being kind of relieved that it wasn't Keith and his crew.

braingonebad 04-25-2009 10:05 AM

I thought it was just me that thought that! Whew....

Sometimes the shows barely resemble the ads for them.

Bummer too that Phil had to bail. I was so happy to see him onboard, then he got that call.

Dh heard him say he was 50, and he goes "Jeez, I guess I don't look so bad for 50, I mean I'm No capt Phil, huh?"

And I said, Yeah, but your no Sig Hanson either!"

:D

hollym 05-01-2009 01:02 PM

I am so glad they ended up rescuing 4 guys off the Katmai, but it's still sad that 7 died. The way they left it last week, it looked to me like there were probably no survivors.

braingonebad 05-03-2009 02:26 PM

Really dramatic too, to hear the survivors tell it. How two of them were on the raft with them but got thrown off by a wave. They had to watch as they drifted away. Yikes....

hollym 05-03-2009 02:33 PM

Talk about survivor guilt, huh? Those guys are going to have a long road ahead of them after that experience.

braingonebad 06-10-2009 11:29 AM

YIKES! You see last night? Keith almost lost 3 guys off the stack. Holy carp! That young guy did not look good. He took a wallop to the head, and his pupil wasn't responsive at all. I wonder if he had a concussion?

That scared the heck outta me just watching.

On a happy note, Phil is BACK!

Bring on the mullet rub.

hollym 06-10-2009 01:02 PM

Yeah, good episode. Poor Keith is going to be going over that in his mind for a LONG time.

Riverwild 06-10-2009 07:25 PM

Ayuh, good episode!
I agree, Keith will be thinking about that! My question back when he first started talking about that tarp was "Why wait? Put it up BEFORE it gets bad!"

Phil looks good!
