Hands locking

Has anybody had an issue with their hands feeling tight and then cramping/locking? This has been a very recent phenomenon but it is kind of scary. Went to grab something today and my middle finger to my pinkie kind of locked up and I had to almost focus to unlock. Also my hands are constantly feeling tight throughout the day.

Could there be any repetitive strain factors along with your PN?
Carpal tunnel , tendinitis, any elbow or shoulder issues?

I've had a couple fingers Lock up but not in months....I feel adequate magnesium could help there. I take some mag probably 3 times per day.

Nothing I can think of. I still type but not an unusual amount. Have also had a lot of head tingling and pain throughout my scalp as well as some minor discomfort in my teeth and tongue. It is probably the PN just making its rotation throughout my body. The funny thing is that when one thing hurts, the other feels better (for example my feet haven't been as bad as in the past). The hand cramping thing however has definitely caught me off guard.

Does the hand cramping worsen when you type or talk on the phone too long? If so it could be carpal tunnel. i recently found out I have that. When I cut down on either activity my hands are better. Something to try and see.

Thanks - doesn't seem to matter too much. For example, it happened at a lunch the other day where I almost spilled my water as I had trouble keeping my hand from locking. What a year!

The fingers you mention are run by different major nerves.

The thumb, index finger and middle finger come off the carpal tunnel, running off the median nerve. The ring finger and pinky run off a different nerve, the ulnar nerve.

Having that Middle finger locking suggests it is not all nerve related.

The hand may lock up because of a tendon issue... this is called trigger finger. It has to do with tendons getting stuck when they should slide easily.

This is a Google image search for trigger finger:

Spasms in the forearm can also cause contractures. An imbalance of calcium to magnesium may cause muscles to contract when they are not wanted. Lesions in the spine may also do this.

You might have to see a hand specialist if it continues after using simple remedies like magnesium supplements and/or magnesium lotion.

Thank you Mrs. D. You are the omniscient matriarch of this forum! As always you have some great info. Am on magnesium daily but I will wait to see if this is just a passing symptom or something more serious.

I think the magnesium lotion would be better for the hands and forearms. The blood supply is very delicate there and if inflammation is present then the magnesium in the blood from oral supplements may not get thru.

Using Morton Epsom lotion would feed the mag right into those tight spots more easily.

Morton's is at WalMart, Walgreen's and online at Amazon. It is so inexpensive, everyone with minor ailments should give it a try.
It works wonderfully for many issues.

is yellow or darker, dehydration could cause cramping up, just thought I would throw it in. It's hard to really drink like your supposed to. Good Luck, Ken in Texas.

Hey there franklin :)

I don't have the locking but my hands feels tight...like they are swollen but they aren't. Except for my left index finger....the large knuckle is swollen all the time. Celebrex seems to keep the swelling down a bit. I have SFN and I still get the electrical zings around all my finger nails.

I haven't thought about rubbing my hands with the Epsom Salt Lotion..I'm going to try that tonight !

ps...the skin on my feet feels very tight too. Not sure what that's about.

I'm glad to know someone else feels this as well ! Dr's don't have an answer when I ask why I feel this way.

I hope this isn't too far off the locking base, or the swollen, though not swollen off shoot, but here goes.

Somehow in the 21st Century, I still use a ton of paper at work. With in the increase in decreasing tactile sensation in hands, especially finger tips I have become a nightmare in sorting all of this paper, not to mention I get more paper cuts, though that is likely a function of the parts of my fingers I now use.

I do a lot of sorting mid second joint. I have some feeling there though and it doesn't tend to get squirrely like my finger tips after time. The only downside is cuts.

I have a serious case of being Lenny from Of Mice and Men. My hands and just not supple.

Hi Franklin,
Yes I also get tightness and locking feeling in my hands. Especially at night they wake me up due to numbness and pain. My hands are very contracted when I wake up in the morning. The first thing I do is some gentle hyperextention stretching. This seems to help a bit.

PN making the rotation throughout the body has been and is my experience. I have not had my hands lock, but what happens to me is similarly freaky.
My fingers jump sometimes when I am trying to hold objects.
Back in the days of my hospital time, for months my hands felt like they wanted to close almost to be a relaxed fist. This has improved somewhat, but I have a tremor in my hands now especially when I try to straighten my fingers.

Since we have such similar situations, I am willing to bet that this will settle down. Can you e mail your dr. and mention it?
