Need ideas for decorating dd's bedroom
 

Hi everyone,


Okay here is the challenge.

I want to re-do dd's (8 yr's old) room.

It NEEDS to be calming and not busy due to the fact that she has a non-verbal learning disability and she becomes overwhelmed with too much STUFF.

It's cotton candy pink, and has a disney princess them.

I was thinking butterflies... any ideas!

Butterflies and laybugs. What's more soothing than that??

Here's a great idea. Get some patterns, or photos of what you would think you would want to put on her walls.

Take the samples and sit her down and carefully put the in front of her. Watch her eyes respond. If she leans towards one of these samples, THAT'S THE ONE THAT YOU SHOULD PUT ON HER WALLS.

Butterflies are wonderful. So is anything lavender. No stripes, bullseyes, big stuff, bold colors. (You know this already, right).

She'll let you know what she feels is good for her.

How about a pale green. Green is thought to be a calming color as well as improve reading skills and relieve stress.

Instead of painting the butterflies on the walls, maybe hang pictures of butterflies. This way if the busyness of the butterflies is too much for her, you can just take the picture down. Watercolors are soft and soothing so maybe finding a watercolor of butterflies would help.

you could also make some assorted butterflies from felt (maybe decorate them with squeeze on fabric paint-some plain, some with a touch of glitter) and attach with staple gun to those cork notice boards (you can paint the frame to your color choice) and hang on those pale green or pale blue or lavender soothing walls.:) I used to make a lot of felt decorations for my boys rooms when they were younger. I also loved Frank's felt critter garbage can idea on the repurposing thread.:p

ps I meant to add too that one can make great themed ceiling decorations using decorated felt cutouts...eg butterflies and put hook in ceiling and hang the butterflies from a peg carousel like this

I removed the pegs on mine and strung the decorations in the loops.

I can't make up my mind as far as color.. i'm thinking pale yellow..lavender.. or pale green.

I've been looking for instructions on how to make nylon butterflies that i can put on the walls or hang from the ceiling... no luck!

the ideas I put above for the notice board pics and ceiling ones can be done with any fabric too...felt just is easy to cut and decorate/finish :)

Do you mean the kind that the shape is made out of wire and is covered with nylon? Kind of like the fairy wings that you see a Halloween time? If so, get a large piece of paper and make a template. Then shape wire according to the template. As for the nylon either buy tights/pantyhose in the colors you want or buy plain cheap pantyhose and spray paint them in the colors that you want. Then slip the nylons over the shaped "wings". For the center buy some coordinating fabric to make the body and attach the wings to the underside of the body.

Lavender is a great color but. . . I have a friend who did her DDs room lavender. At 1st her DD loved it but then found that the color was making her feel sad and depressed. Also her DS has Asperger's and would get agitated if he spent too much time in the room. I am not sure if the agitation was caused by the color or by his sister. lol Anyhow, they just repainted her room a couple of weekends ago. The shade of lavender could have been the issue. A deeper purple could do that while a softer more pale lavender would be fine.

Yellow is a bright cheery color. It brings warmth and happiness in to the space but can be stimulating as well.

Another suggestion, if you are going to use soft/pastel type colors, buy some top sheets in a couple of colors that she likes. Then tack them on the wall (at separate times, not all at once) and see how she reacts over time to each of the colors. By doing this, you will be able to see how she is around each color. The color that is most soothing to her and creates calmness within her is the color I would paint the room. The bonus, she will have coordinating top sheets once the room is painted.

That is a great idea about the sheets, i'll try that.

She needs new bedding anyway

Why not have her make them with you?? She could choose the fabric she likes, choose the designs, you can hand her the glue, she can make them, you can both hang them on the wall, or from the ceiling, That hanging thing that Chemar showed is perfect!!!

This could be a mommy and kid project and the end results are pretty decorations that everybody can oooh and aaahh over!!!

I always wished I had a pretty little girl. I would have done Buttons and Bows and all frilly little things.

Instead I had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers.

Whatever theme you use, why not making a little felt blanket. You both can do it or she can do it all by herself. You take two large squares of felt (Jo Ann fabric has alot of choices) every couple of inches you cut into the felt, about 2-3 inches. Then lay them together & tie the 'fringe' parts together, to make a nice felt blanket. I made one with an autumn theme on one side (piece) and plain tan on the other side (piece) for my dad.

I've made the fleece kind of blankets before so i know what you're talking about.

I might just carry the theme onto the kids bathroom... she does have two teenage brothers.... but GIRLS OVERRULE!!...LOL

My bedroom was fire engine red when we bought our house. I changed it before we even moved in to a sea foam green. I find it very soothing. I have some ocean pictures that my grandmother painted on the water in there. A white comforter makes it look really clean and inviting. I chose the carpeting because it reminds me of sand. My bedroom really is very relaxing. Might be an idea.

That is a very cute room! I really like it. What is great about the color of the walls is that as she starts entering in to the tween years it can easily be changed to something more tweenish by putting different bedding and curtains in the room as well as changing some of the decorations.

I love the color.
I like it with the pink drapes.
I haven't started anything yet, i still have to strip her border now.. take some furniture out.. etc.

I agree with Melody; the room is pretty and has a tranquil look to it, I think.

I agree about making it teen friendly or able to be with a few changes. I loved my room growing up. It suited me at your d's age through the end of high school. My dresser and desk wrapped around my room. The wall paper was different colored pink flowers which was also on the bed spread and blinds. The hard wood floors I put an area rug which had different shades of pink in it. I got many compliments even through the pig sty. What I love now though and my mom has part of her family room hand painted on the walls. This could get expensive and I am not sure how she would feel with that as a teen but I would love that in my house. If you need some cheaper accent stuff target has cute things. I have been moving so much and have picked up some things there.

That's kinda what i'm wanting to do, as far as it carrying onto to her teens.


I want to have this room..lol I have hubby's desk and laptop in our room.. the ironing board set up... etc..etc...



Hubby needs his desk since he's being retrained due to a work injury....


I want a frilly room....just like the one i want for dd... it just seems so pretty and peaceful... and relaxing... Oh well... when hubby is done, the desk will be gone.

Only two more years to go..
