Pandora radio

As I've mentioned before, I just got DSL after more than twelve years on dial-up, so I'm exploring things I've never imagined--things that are probably old hat to you folks!

Today's discovery was Pandora. I read on the site that you could enter into the search the name of an artist, track or comoposer, and they would find you music based on that.

I figured, okay, I'll try a few different artists to see what happens. To start with, I typed in "Doyle Lawson", and GUESS WHAT? I never had to do anything else, they play bluegrass gospel for me, which is my favorite and my husband's also!

Just like magic. I love it. :D

I love Pandora. It's playing in the background now. :)

TheSleeper 01-30-2012 07:08 PM

YouTube also has what seems to be and endless supply of music to listen to. You can also try playlist.com and search for favorites and create your own playlist.

Love Pandora! I also listen to "homemade" on-line radio stations as well. Wise Radio and Wizard Radio play pop-rock-indie type music. Nixa Country plays a lot of indie country artists.

aussiemom 01-30-2012 09:08 PM

I wasn't too thrilled with it, deleted it off my phone long time ago. I like Jimmy Buffett. And they did play a FEW of his songs. Then it went to country. Not! I wanted Buffett only. They wouldn't do it, so I deleted it.

I love Pandora, it plays my music in the bathroom as I get ready for work. Hubby loves it too, it's one of the few things he does with his smart phone. :)

On my Pandora I have created several stations. I guess some of the artists don't have many albums out so they play a lot of the music out by other similar artists. So when that happens I just do the thumbs down. I guess eventually the only ones left to play will be the original artist I chose.

Dejibo 02-01-2012 07:43 AM

I have pandora on my iphone, and my internet based TV. Love it!

Kitty 02-03-2012 09:25 AM

I've got mine set to play songs from the 70's. Mainly 1978 - 1979. I love it! Ambrosia, Hall & Oates, The Eagles, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Robert John (Sad Eyes), etc. I could go on and on. Tigger likes it when I sing......Panda goes to the back bedroom. :o

Edit to add: How could I have left out The Bee Gees?!

Blessings2You 02-03-2012 09:30 AM

I'm still getting the hang of it...I might want to "thumbs down" a certain song, but not all by that artist, for example.

I've got a bluegrass station, a 50's station (I know, I'm old), a country oldies station, and southern gospel so far. My husband likes the old country, southern gospel and bluegrass, so I play those through the speaker. The 50's stuff I play through the headphones.

SallyC 02-03-2012 02:40 PM

As far as I'm concerned, since the 50s 60 and 70s, there hasn't been any music.:D A few exceptions, but most of it is now yuck!!

Kitty 02-04-2012 11:06 AM

The ads that play in between songs on my Pandora are all of a sudden in Spanish! What happened?

Blessings2You 02-04-2012 11:17 AM

That's funny! I'll be interested to hear why!

I will say that I don't find their ads intrusive really.

Me either, B2Y. They're very short and very "tolerable" (as my Dad would have said....:p).

tkrik 02-04-2012 08:32 PM

I like Pandora for the most part. I am new to it, but like it so far.

Blessings2You 02-05-2012 06:30 AM

I'm such a hillbilly (in a good sense) that I'm still, "Look at this! Look at this!" We pretty much skipped over the newfangled radio stuff, except for the music channels on the dish which usually display the song titles.

So a radio that lets you pick your own music, displays the title, the lyrics, a bio of the artist, and suggestions for similar artists? I'm in heaven. :)

Kitty 02-05-2012 07:00 AM

The only thing I wish they'd change is the number of "thumbs down" votes you can give within a certain time. Once you hit their limit you have to listen to the whole song before it's added to your don't-like list.

Blessings2You 02-05-2012 07:19 AM

I'm not sure what you mean...do you mean if you listen to the first three seconds of several songs in a row before thumbing them down?

No, if you decide you don't like a particular song you can give it the thumbs-down. If you do that repeatedly to many songs you'll get a little pop up box that says something like "you can only reject a certain number of songs within a certain time frame." You have to listen to the whole song but then they tell you they won't play it again.

Here's the message I get....... "Sorry about that. After this song is through we won't play this one again on your station."

Since you now have DSL it also gives you some options on watching TV on line for free. Try Hulu, you have to sign up, but the info they require is limited to use it for free. Of course they also offer a premium plan too. The free edition just requires you disabled ad blockers for the site and watch a few commercials.

Not really any worse than regular TV and you can pick what you watch.

Blessings2You 02-05-2012 10:05 AM

I'll have to check it out and see if there are any shows I want to watch!

Kitty 02-05-2012 10:12 AM

I'm going to check out Hulu, too. Now that I have a laptop and can use it on the couch or in the recliner I can probably watch all kinds of stuff n it that I couldn't with the desktop. :)

TheSleeper 02-05-2012 10:20 AM

I am certainly not a pro at this, my son`s friend told me there is a way to connect the computer to a newer TV and use it as your computer screen and stream movies to the TV. The newer TV`s have a port for it, and the computer should allow a second screen to be used.

Kids usually have more experience dealing with the stuff.

tkrik 02-05-2012 11:02 AM

I watch the free stuff on Hulu. They have TV shows, movies, documentaries, etc. Since I already have a Netflix account, I didn't want to spend more for Hulu so I just do the free stuff.

Sleeper - You can do that. From what I understand, you need an HDMI cable to hook in to the TV. Most newer TVs have that capability. My dream TV is an internet TV. The TV has a built in WiFi so you can get internet access if you have a wireless router. I know Sony and Samsung make them but I'm not too sure what other manufacturers. They're expensive though.

SallyC 02-05-2012 01:02 PM

Trish, At first I thought, how cool, an Internet TV. But I'm not an either kinda person, I want both going at the same time.:D:p

TheSleeper 02-10-2012 10:20 AM

You can also watch some full length movies on YouTube, they have a variety.

Pandora is awesome. Internet radio -- what a concept. I have quite a variety of artists and styles of music that I enjoy listening to. I get tired of CD's because it's always the same thing. And, on-air radio stations are that way too. I greatly appreciate the variety on Pandora.
