My sister has cancer

My sister had an MRI guided breast biopsy last week. I didn't even know they did those things. Anyway, it came back an aggresive breast cancer. She sees a surgeon next week. My oldest sister died of bone cancer and my Dad had prostate cancer. I am callling tomorrow and scheduling my mammogram of whitch I have missed for the last 3 years.

:( oh doydie, i am so sorry to hear this.

sending lots of prayers and hugs.:hug::hug:

Twinkletoes 07-23-2008 11:11 PM

Oh my goodness, Doydie! That's too bad! :(

If they're waiting until next week for surgery, maybe that's a good sign??? I mean, it's a week away, so maybe they've caught it early enough.

Hugs to you and your dear sis. Sorry for all your losses.

Koala77 07-23-2008 11:12 PM

I'm so sorry to hear of your sister's breast cancer Doydie. My very close cousin is being treated for breast cancer at the moment, and she's doing well. I pray your sister does as well as my cousin once she starts her treatment.

Do please go have your mammogram. My last one found a lump that I didn't know I had. They tried to biopsy it under XRay guidance, but they just couldn't get to it because of it's position.

I ended up having the lump removed in hospital and it turned out to be benign ..... thank goodness.

We'll all be nagging you until you have that mammogram, so please go make an appointment! OK?

ewizabeth 07-23-2008 11:14 PM

I'm so sorry for your Sis. I hope it turns out to be non-aggressive. I'm glad you're getting a mammogram. Sending up prayers.

doydie 07-24-2008 10:38 PM

Thanks all. I needed that. I'm having a really bad day. Not MS way but just emotion. My husband can have some real road rage. He had his 60th b'day today and he wasn't very happy on the road which put me in a bad mood. Then when we came home from supper my tv said my digital cable had been disconnected. After about 15 minutes on hold I got someone who couldn't figure out anything at all. We have another tv that isn't hooked up to digital cable so I watched it for two hours then called WOW back because the guy said he would call me back and he hadn't. This wonderful young woman got on and had my tv fixed in minutes! She then transferred me to the computer department and a nice lady helped me with my 'puter issues. For some reason a local TV station hijacked my WOW home page and made their home page mine. So I took 2 Tylenol PM and put my soft music on and soon I'll be in bed.

Oh, my sister. Even before she has seen a doctor she has said that she will have surgery, maybe radiation therapy but WILL NOT have chemo! She said that people who have chemo end up dying anyway so shy take it. I just told her to please make an informed decision and not an emotional one. But her doctor did say it is an aggressive cancer.

Twinkletoes 07-25-2008 01:07 AM

You gave your sister really good advice about making an informed decision vs. an emotional one. I hope she takes it.

BaxterTheBunny 07-25-2008 06:04 PM

So sorry doydie

Prayers for your sister to be okay. Sorry about the frustrating day. Hope you had good sleep.

doydie 07-25-2008 10:25 PM

OK guys. I made my app't for my mammogram for next Wendsday. I hate those things!

sabimax 07-26-2008 05:29 AM

doydie, good luck with your test...and prayers for you and sis....right now my oldest sister has been fighting cancer for few years..first colon, spread to liver and now liver and lungs....she is now finally on experimental drugs at a university..as all approved chemo wasnt doing it...hugsssss to another sis, sarah

doydie 07-30-2008 11:09 PM

Well my sister had her app't with the surgeon today. She is scheduled for a modified radical mastectomy on August 12th. They can even start the reconstructive part at that time if they can get a plastic surgeon who'e schedule fits. And her insurance will pay for the unaffected breast to also have surgery to match the affected one. I jokingly told her that she will be messing up my Olympics watching! But I guess that's what nerves do to you.

Now for my mammogram. I had it today. Actually it was scheduled for yesterday but I put it down for today. When I told them that my sister was having her surgeons app't today and this was my way of feeling close to her during that appointment, they immediately worked me in. But......after I was done and they sent me merrily on my way after I took off my little BBs, they called me back and told me the radiologist saw a mass on both breasts and wants them repeated. So I go back Friday. I know any other time I wouldn't be worried about it. I know that other tissue can get in the way of the breast, cysts show up or anything else. But right now was not a good time for that. So that's my story.

weegot5kiz 07-30-2008 11:33 PM

prayers it is just cyst or cartilage or something non threatening

Friend2U 07-31-2008 12:31 AM

I'm so sorry. My prayers are with you, your sister, and family.:smileypray:

Oh I am so sorry to hear this.... count me in for prayers also!

Debbie D 07-31-2008 10:00 AM

Oh my dear...

You are in my thoughts and prayers today...you and your sister have some definite challenges ahead...
I'm glad that you went for your mammogram...even though they might have found something suspicious, thank God you went and now you can get treated if something is wrong...
Your sis' cancer prompted you to take care of yourself...I know it's strange to say this, but her cancer has helped you by scaring you into going in.

I hope and pray that your mammogram is just a bad photograph, but if it's something serious, I pray that your dr. can provide treatment and healing...

Take care of yourself...you're not alone...let us know how you and your sis are doing, okay?:grouphug:

SallyC 07-31-2008 10:11 AM

Doydie, keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, too. I hope all turns out OK on Friday..

Good wishes for your Sister's surgery on the 12th..

doydie 07-31-2008 11:03 PM

This has nothing to do with my sisters surgery but has to do with her. Years ago she decided to donate her body to a med school to be a cadaver. My mother was just petrified that there would be no grave or anything and what people would be doing to her body. Now this surgery has brought all those bad feelings up. I went to the IU school of medicine website and read all about the cadaver program. It is very interesting. My Mom and sister finally had a long talk today and I think things are finally settling between them.

NurseNancy 08-01-2008 12:01 AM

doydie,

i'm sorry about your sister's dx.
i was just dx'd with an aggressive breast CA but it was non-invasive.
i am just recovering from bilateral lumpectomies.
just to let you know that tx today is excellent.

i start radiation soon but the surgery went well and my recovery is going well too.

i'll send prayers to your sister for her full recovery and to you that the mammogram will be fine.

i know what you are going thru.

doydie 08-01-2008 11:09 PM

I had my repeat mammogram today. They do things different now than several years ago when I had to have a repeat. They have this little wand looking like thing that they hook up to the machine then they line it up over the suspicious area and just squash with that little thing. So the area on the left breast was just a glitch on the film. But they needed to explore the right one some more so they sent me over for an ultrasound. So I have two cute little cysts. They are almost together as one and kind of looked like a rubber ducky or a whale. So I just told the US tech that I would give it a name and welcome it to the family . So after one of my favorite characters on NCIS I have named my cyst Ducky. I hope Ducky never grows and gets uncomfortable. So I will see him a year from now.

Becky21 08-01-2008 11:40 PM

Doydie,

My cousin and my best friends sister have both gone through breast cancer and they are doing very well now. It is rough going through chemo but they have won the fight. My cousin has beat breast cancer twice now.

I am praying that your sister will beat it also.:):hug:

weegot5kiz 08-02-2008 01:51 AM

Good news, Doydie...thanks for letting us know..

Prayers continuing for Sis.

tovaxin_lab_rat 08-10-2008 07:29 PM

How is your sister doing? Her surgery is in a couple of days.

How are you doing?

doydie 08-11-2008 01:00 AM

Thanks for asking. Her surgery is scheduled Tuesday at 2. She was 'OK' until the plastic surgeon marked all the lines on her chest where he will be cutting and it brought it all down to earth. I am just glad they are doing the reconstruction so that she can stay in the hospital more than 1 day! In my days of nurses training a mastectomy patient was kept in ICU overnight. Now they go home the next day!

doydie 08-13-2008 12:03 AM

Surgery is over, took about 4 hours then she was in recovery for about 3 hours so it went longer than we thought. But so far everything is OK. Pathologist will have to look at everything to see where she stands as far as lymph node involvement and prognosis. She has the temporary breast implants/tissue expanders in now and will have to have another surgery with general anesthetic to remove those and put the real implants in.

I can't believe they are planning on sending her home tomorrow. Her husband says his hours are flexible enough that he can stay with her for a couple of days. I just can't do it. She and I pretty well split up all of my Moms chores. She does the laundry and I do the grocery shopping and we split op the doctors appointments. She doesn't have a lot of laundry or grocery needs since the retirment complex does all linens and all meals are provided but she still has basic needs and she doesn't like to get up early enough to get dressed for breakfast. But I will be her everything for I know a month. I'm already tired.

weegot5kiz 08-13-2008 12:34 AM

Sorry doydie i have been away a couple days, glad her surgery went well, praying the prognosis and the outcome will be a positive ones, I know you have a lot to do but make sure not to over do it so bad, that your MS does its thing. for support and a  for the heck of it
