My coffee cup

I'm sitting at the kitchen table contemplating my coffee cup. I don't specifically remember what it used to say but I can make out a very faded I and A from the word MICHIGAN. It used to have a blue M on it and I think it said GO BLUE.

I think it also used to say Red Lobster or some other restaurant on it at one time...

The thing looks like it's been sitting in a smokehouse. Wierd coffee stains all over it. Some areas look like it's been sandpapered. The stains suggest the cup's cracked but it always comes out of the dishwasher whole. The part I sip on is dark brown. The part of the handle where my left thumb invariably rests when I pick it up is extremely worn.

I've been drinking out of this cup for over 30 years. 2 countries, 5 states, 4 houses, a college dorm room, several apartments...

Should I give in to my wife's disgusting scowl and retire it?

Or should I keep drinking it until the MICHIGAN WOLVERINES WIN ANOTHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Is it another college football Saturday or what?

Tom

A good coffee cup is hard to find :D! I broke my favorite one a while back and I miss it every morning :(.

I wouldn't give it up without a fight, lol. Try soaking it in Cascade for a day or so it may make the mug a little bit more presentable :D.

Kitty 09-19-2009 10:40 AM

Keep it! It's part of you!

I tend to use the same coffee cup every day. I have a cupboard full of them but only use the one. Maybe I should try rotating them so I don't grab the same one everyday.

Come to think of it....even when it's not the "next one up" in the cupboard I look for it, wash it, and use it again! :o

AfterMyNap 09-19-2009 10:45 AM

No way! Keep it, it's part of your soul, like a great pair of leather shoes, it just fits.

I agree with J., a little spa time with some bleached water will give it another decade or more.

I have two stainless mugs that are identical and I've been using them since 1998, life would never be the same without them.

Oh, and yeah, Tom, I'm the one with the weird ideas.

Dejibo 09-19-2009 10:50 AM

Mr Clean MAgic Erasers will take off even the darkest coffee stains.

I vote to hang onto an old friend. It sounds like the day may come that it wont be there, and you will have treasured memories.

Tell the wife when company is over you will use a better mug, but till then, its a mug full of memories that you cant bear to part with.

My DH bought me a cup for my 40th birthday. that says, "It's my 29th birthday and I'll cry if I want to"

It has a colorful burning cake with candles and confetti flying all over it....and I've been slurping all of my drinks out of it ever since...29 yrs.......Hey, it the cup's 29th birthday..;)

I hand wash it every day....it has not faded or stained, although the bottom of it gets pretty discusting at times..:D

If this is a poll...I say, ""Have it buried with you"!!!!!!:p

Um....you have to keep it until we are in the National Champ game. Then tell her you will get a new one.

Or you could say honey I'll keep it until your buckeyes can beat USC, or beat a #5 top ranked team or better or until OSU wins a national championship. All of those might take longer than Michigan winning a national champ game.

Go Blue!

legzzalot 09-19-2009 07:17 PM

Sounds like you have had that cup longer than you have had that wife.... Therefor the cup wins.

Kind of like me and my collection of high heeled shoes I cannot bear to part with even though I cannot wear them anymore.

Hubby to be realizes I have had those shoes longer than I have had him and it is mandatory that we pack them up every time we move.

I use a stainless travel mug every day, so it keeps my coffee good and hot, but I used to use a Denny's mug that had a smiling face on the front of it that changed from a frown to a smile when you poured hot coffee in.

I can also remember going to my Gram's house and always using the same glass from her cupboard.

I would get real touchy if someone else used "my" glass, so when she passed away, while everyone was snatching up their so called must haves; I took my glass and it's in my curio cabinet in it's place of honor.

I say keep your treasured cup, Tom. OR, put it in the curio cabinet in it's own ''place of honor".

DD and I are the quns of weird stains. We drink all sorts of crazy teas, if you think coffee stains, try that. I use Clorox Cleanup, works like a charm.

My fave mug says Rutgers - my dad went there. Keep the mug Tom. I think that's too cool, you've had one with that kind of history. If it does ever have to retire, I say it gets a shelf to display, not the trash bin.

Keep that mug. I have ones I love and could never part with.

Legzzalot _- I have every pair of shoes I once wore. No way could I use them now, but if I wanted, I could visit them. My belts are on a rack, they're like art. They remind me when my waist was skinny, so the belts I normally could not afford were on sale. I've kept some dresses I loved too and can no longer wear. I have shorts I wore at 17, and up to the last year in a chair, fit in them (Not that I'd wear them!!). It's my own personal museum of my past. I also have books and teaching materials in attic still.

And I had to laugh about this thread this morning as I filled my favorite coffee cup. It was a special gift from the firemen. It's my INS mug they gave me after they came over for dinner and realized I was not joking about the 14 illegal aliens living in the 3 bedroom house next door. Oh memories of my first house! I miss that place. It was horrible and falling apart, but it was ours.

After last weeks win over Notre Dame I say keep the mug, maybe it will bring luck this year!
Mugs are a funny thing, my dad is very attached to the oldest, ugliest mugs that he has gathered over the years of working in hospitals! They don't have logos and the only color is from old coffee stains but when I tried to throw them away he indignantly retrieved them from the trash and told me to keep my hands OFF. I even found a mug from my first college (I was only there 1 semester) sitting on a shelf in his office! Go figure:eek:

The cup is easily cleaned and I have a good line you can use with the wife.

Honey, this cup reminds me of all the places I've been in my life, each morning I wake to new memories of us. This cup reminds me of us, it was once new, like we were. Each time I drink a cup of coffee that you fix, it reminds me that we, like this cup, we will change but still be here, that's why I would like to keep it. It reminds me that even though we will be a whole lot older, cracked or wrinkled, we still have each other and I wouldn't want to throw us out, would you? :p

Good luck on keeping that cup.:)

BTW...a cup with coffee 'stains' makes the coffee taste better. There is no debate...coffee tastes different after you clean that cup and takes awhile to 'age' until it tastes the same. lol

legzzalot 09-21-2009 08:21 PM

LOL COK, why do I have the image of Sanford and Son in my head? Lines like that I wouldn't be able to throw anything away in this house!

ewizabeth 09-21-2009 09:27 PM

I have all these little clay containers and woodwork projects our sons made for us when they were in kindergarten through high school. I don't care how they look, they'll always be on the counters, desks and wherever else they are used in the house. Some things just aren't replaceable! :)

Hubby didn't buy mine Sal, but it says "I'd rather be 40 than pregnant".

Mine must look a lot like your's Tom by the sound of it's condition, and in the many years that I've had it, it has a similar history.

We recently brought new coffee cups but I just can't bring myself to throw away this old favourite!
