Sciatica :mad::mad:

Ow!

Overtime on top of it :Bang-Head:

Grrrrr!

Anyone have any suggestions? What worked for you if you have dealt with it?

It's killing me. I can't sit for more than 30 seconds. Lifting my leg to clutch while driving is agony. Even laying down hurts. The only thing that helps is standing up but life requires us to sit too! :(

I've had it before but it was on the right. Now it's on the left and it hurts in a whole different way!

ewizabeth 09-21-2009 09:59 AM

Aw, I'm so sorry RW.   I've never had it but it sounds so painful. :( I hope it gets better soon.

Dejibo 09-21-2009 10:16 AM

ouch! :( I am so sorry you are in pain.

I find my chiro helps me greatly when mine flairs up. Hot packs help, not sitting in one position for long periods helps. resting helps. stretching helps.

Hang in there.

soxmom 09-21-2009 11:30 AM

Ouch, sorry you are going thru this. I too get this;...really bad if
I sleep on my side. I get pain in my hip and my shin, and sometimes my knee.
I use heat, it helps. Like Dej, this is when I take a trip to my Ddad's(he
is a chiro). But heat really helps alot too.

Twinkletoes 09-21-2009 01:01 PM

Owwwweeeee!!! I am so sorry for your pain, RW.

Sending feel-better hugs. :hug::hug::hug:

gonnamakeit 09-21-2009 01:22 PM

Many years ago I went to a pain doctor recommended by my neuro. He found the source of the pain, which was an infection in my spine.

He gave me a shot of cortisone in my spine which cleared up the pain within 3 days. I have never had the sciatica again.

SandyC 09-21-2009 01:44 PM

((((RW)))) I don't have any suggestions but will pray your pain subsides soon!

tkrik 09-21-2009 03:42 PM

Thrifta Sista - You poor thing. My SIL just went through this. I told her to do the Epsom salt soaks and use to use ice throughout the day. It worked for her. Can you get those ice pack things from work? That way you can strap it on and keep moving and doing the things you need to.

Sending you lots of cyber:hug:'s and hope you feel better.

karousel 09-21-2009 03:45 PM

Ouch!! I had it throughout my pregnancy but never found any relief so I have no suggestions. Sorry. I just know how bad it hurts.:hug: Hope you feel better soon.

karilann 09-21-2009 07:00 PM

Oh my aching back

Yep, been there done that. Doc sent me for physical therapy and it helped greatly. Seems MS made my hips crooked and they were able to show me some moves to keep them straight. They exercises really helped even though I thought they would not.

Koala77 09-22-2009 01:23 AM

Me too RW!

I've had sciatica for the past two months. The pain's been shooting through the same hip as the one I've had tendonitis in for the past 9 months.

I assure you I was not overly pleased to add this rather nasty sharp pain to the ache and soreness I already had. :(

My GP wanted me to see an orthopedic surgeon first up, but I would not even consider spinal surgery no matter what at the moment, so I talked him into giving me a physio referral instead.

Anyway....... I've been seeing a physio for a combination of treatments. He started with some gentle traction on my sacro-iliac joint, and after that I had ultra sound, massage, gentle exercise, heat packs, TENS machine and acupuncture.

I believe it's the acupuncture that's finally brought me relief, but I must admit I was very dubious at first. I had absolutely no faith at all in the needles, seeing they hadn't worked the one time I'd tried it many years ago.

Considering I didn't think anything would happen... I was pleasantly surprised. For the first time in months, my hip is relatively pain free.

I hope you get some relief soon RW because I know how painful sciatica can be.

Lady 09-22-2009 01:30 AM

My DH has that problem. Even the Chiropractor won't touch him until he has a week of Naproxen and narcotic pain pills in him. Medication gets rid of the inflammation and dulls the pain, then get to the Chiro doctor. Otherwise it is a Epidural cocktail shot (3 meds in that shot) into the spine.

He never takes pills, so when he does, I know his back is bad. I hope yours heals fast on its own, or with OTC treatments.

Riverwild 09-22-2009 09:42 AM

Thanks everyone!

I have been doing the exercises that the doc gave me back a few years ago when I first had it, only time will tell if they will relieve the stoopid pain.

Last time it was on the right hand side and it was more hip and butt pain with leg weakness feeling sort of like the leg would collapse, so I saw the neuro and had an MRI of my lumbar spine. It showed a bulging disc at L4-L5.

I am guessing that this is the same disc except it's shifted to the other side. The pain is different too. It's the thigh and down the front of my kneecap and below it, running to the other side of the leg.

All I know is it HURTS! :( I'm usually pretty stoic about pain and I seem to have a high tolerance for it, so it's BAD...:p

(don't forget...this is from the girl who almost croaked because she had no pain or anything except that niggling impending feeling of doom when her appendix ruptured, worked most of a 12 hour shift, drove herself to the hospital, and told the nice nurses that if it was constipation, to give her back her clothes and she would leave quietly! :D)

NurseNancy 09-22-2009 05:48 PM

i get a weekly massage and that helps.
there's also a stretch i do that helps release the glutt muscle. the nerve travels thru that muscle.

lay on the bed. lift the affected leg over your knee on the opposite leg. slowly and gently use the bent leg to pull your affected leg towards your abdomen. try to hold for 10 seconds. and repeat x's 3. when it hurts too bad back off on how high you pull the leg up. you can also do this move in a chair but it's more effective laying down.

i'd also check with your dr to try and track down the cause of the pain.

braingonebad 09-22-2009 07:57 PM

I have pain similar to that (they thought it was sciatica until it started happening other places). Used to take elavil. I still get quick flares, either hip/leg or mid spine. Enough to stop me in my tracks, pretty nasty stuff. If they started coming regular, I'd get right back on elavil.

If I'm sitting, something fluffy seems to help. And large amounts of muscle relaxers, just between you an me, is not too shabby either. I've had days where my back gets it so bad, it starts to spasm and lock up. Dh will take me out for margaritas.

The doc said ice then heat, but ice always makes it hurt more. So I just do a little heat - 20 mins or so. sometimes a ThermaCare if I have one, if it's going on all day.

Hope something helps you with this.

RW - How are you feeling? Hope you are doing better today and are finding things that help you with the pain.:hug:

Kitty 09-23-2009 11:52 AM

I hope you're feeling better today, RW. You never complain so when you do I know you must be really hurtin'! Feel better soon!

soxmom 09-23-2009 12:07 PM

I hear ya River. I complained to my primary years ago who said, sciatic
pain does NOT effect your knee...he was wrong. I get the pain in my
knee and down into my shin...ouch it really stinks! I hope today finds
you feeling a bit better~!

SallyC 09-23-2009 01:10 PM

Thinking about you. I hope you are a little better..

Riverwild 09-23-2009 04:57 PM

Thanks!

Meh...it's not better today cause I had to do a 360 mile round trip in the mouse car in about 8 hours, with no sleep since yesterday!

I'm doing some ibuprofen and some baclofen and some tizanidine and I am going to BED! Hopefully when I wake up I won't be a pretzel! :p

I've found that driving makes my right knee/leg hurt worse than anything else I do. Even a short trip to the grocery store is painful. Sometimes I get out of the car and have to just stand there for a minute or two until my knee decides it's ready to walk. I don't know how you stood it as long as you did. You're a trooper! Get some rest!! :)

:eek::eek::eek: OMGoodness! Did it take you a while to "unwind" yourself? LOL I hope that today's adventures didn't mess you up any.

msarkie 10-01-2009 07:55 PM

You might try sleeping on your back with a couple of pillows behind your knees, or on your side with a pillow between your legs. This always seems to help me some. Massage is always good! Everyone has given very good advice. Sciatica is MISERABLE!!! It effects your state of mind nerves as well as your literal nerves. Hope it goes away soon!

SallyC 10-01-2009 08:03 PM

Feeling any better, River?

TheSleeper 10-02-2009 05:05 AM

Hi River! Sorry your in pain, ya I know it and I am still trying to forget it. As strange as this may sound? I slept for almost seven months like I was sitting in a chair with my back on the floor and my calves on the couch.

The only way I could get enough relief from the pain to fall asleep. herniated L-5 disc, intensive physical therapy during the 7 months seems to have helped. No surgery and no real problems since.

Felt like I had been stabbed, from the top of my butt to my left ankle.

soxmom 10-02-2009 06:44 AM

How are you feeling RW? Any better?:hug:

Riverwild 10-02-2009 07:39 AM

Thanks everyone! :grouphug:

It's MUCH better! I've been doing the exercises that I was given during the first bout a few years ago and it has helped. It seems to have eased up, not so many aaaAAARGH moments where the pain shoots through the knee. I'm just going to keep doing the exercises even when it lets up completely, and maybe it will never come back again!!!

(I hate "exercising". I stretch every day before I get up and just go along with my daily activities, walking and working and doing what I normally do. I figure if I can't get enough from that, then I am doomed anyway!:p I don't mind swimming, but the whole "exercise" thang just bugs me and I hate having to add them to my daily routine!)

DM 10-04-2009 06:18 PM

Hello my tall friend. Sorry you are having all that pain. I remember several yrs ago, when my L4-L5 were herniated and all I can say is OUCH!!!!

I went to PT and they did exercises, ultrasound w/heat, etc. *loved the ultrasound* I even tried Acupuncture and had 2 rounds of Epidurals, which I would not do again. I think I wore my heating pad out during that time. :(

I feel really bad for you RW, sciatic pain is the worse. Take care and try to relax as much as you can; I know~ hard when you have a job. I know you have a lot of bigtime pain tolerance, but you need to give this sciatic pain time to heal.

Sending huge healing hugs to you, my friend.:grouphug::hug::grouphug:

Just saw this Riverwild... what usually works for me is ice bag or even bag of frozen veggies. I do this in the beginning so don't know if it would take inflammation away after so much time.
Hope it's gone by now :)
Linda

Happy to hear you are feeling better..

I hear you on the exercise carp. I have to force myself to do it. Ican't help thinking that if I did more, maybe I could walk better. There's that old mr. guilt again..
