Night Sweats anyone??
I don't know if it is from the Avonex, or the hormanal changes (MS induced Menopause) or what. But every night for the last 3 months I have woken up sometime around 3 AM completely drenched in sweat. It's disgusting! I have also been having extreme daytime sweating. But the night sweats are the worst. Last night H2B made the mistake of trying to put his arm around me. And he yells "oh, gross! honey, you are soaked!".
IS this like some weird MS thing? Or is it just the menopause like thing? For some reason this started around the time I started taking Avonex, but I don't know that it stays in your system that long. |
This can also be a blood sugar thing. When you get a low blood sugar, you can sweat alot. This passes with time, as the liver then gets the signals to increase glucose production (called gluconeogenesis). This may be the beginning of pre-diabetes, or insulin resistance. When was the last time you had a fasting glucose done?
But then I have been reading that you have infection? That could do it too. |
I have never had a fasting glucose done. And yes I have been sick/ recovering for the last couple of weeks I am sure that is not helping. I will have to look into that one. I know my uncle and my aunt are both diabetic.
It's just frustrating, you never know if it is MS, or meds, or something else. |
Infections can raise blood sugar in sensitive people, too.
If your sweats are at a particular time... each night, try having some cheese or a high protein health bar before bedtime (carbs or large snack may make sweating worse). It may change the sweat time, or even suppress it. There is a nice high protein yogurt...at Kroger's Carbmaster with only 4 grams of carb and 12 grams of protein. Tastes like a fruit pudding! Only 80 cals. This is an example of a good snack to test with. If you sweat alot after eating...this is called gustatory sweating and may indicate the beginning of diabetes too. Some doctors believe everyone over 40 develops some insulin resistance. Some progress on to pre-diabetes and others less so, depending on genetics, diet, lifestyle, etc. |
No night sweats here. As a matter of fact, I have been waking up chilled. It's gettin' cold here in Ohio. brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Feel better, Legz |
Sally is really OLD, listen to her. - OK, a little older than me, but we do get a little wiser with age!! Your menopause may be like that or be insulin resistance, etc, . I had fasting glucose test test done in pregnancy as routine -turns out I had gestational diabetes (common with twins) and am now more at risk for diabetes but it's been 17 years now without. See a doctor, look at possible answers.

ME ME ME! I have night sweats since starting on DMDs for MS. I have complained bitterly about it.
when I stop the meds, the sweats go away. They wont let me stop the meds. hope you feel better. |
No menopause for me, not a diabetic, no known health problems besides the MS. I went thru the nights sweats too, summer, winter it didn`t seem to matter, I would wake up with my head and hair drenched, collar of my shirt soaking wet.
I didn`t feel any different, PPMS so no obvious flares or stuff. Also went through bouts of dizziness and vertigo. |
Night Sweats anyone? No thanks Legz, you can keep them. LOL
I don't have that issue. It could be from the Avonex, your surgery, or the menopausal issues you are having or even a combination of the 3. However, I would mention it to your dr the next time you go as it could be something else. BTW - I do know that when I am really sick I occasionally get night sweats. In fact, I am trying to get over a sinus infection. I don't want to do another round of abx so I started doing my Neti faithfully. Yesterday I woke up from my nap sweaty - not soaked or anything like that, just sweaty. I am assuming this was a good sign that I am breaking through the infection. I hope you start feeling better soon. |
Now that I have turned my heat on, I'll wake up in the middle of the night and have to throw off all my covers and drink some water...
I'll have to remember to turn down the heat at night.. |
Putting my hand up here, but mine don't always wait until night time. :(
Mine is definitely peri-menopausal but I had thought I was through that. Oh well, apparently not. When I mentioned the sweats to my doctor, she suggested Evening Primrose Oil which is a very effective herbal remedy for menopausal symptoms, and I must admit I've had marked relief since starting the capsules. Do you take narcotic pain relief, because I was also led to believe that taking long term pain killers can sometimes lead to night sweats. mrsD should be able to tell you if that's true or not. |
I seem to sweat more then usual. Had i.v. solumedrol 1g x 3 days 3? weeks ago for 1st time and probably last. I take minipress already since my bod cant control blood pressure for 3/4 of it (paraplegic from chest down). Minipress works good. 2mg 5x / day. Taking that for 20 yrs.
I do know that if mattress isnt super soft (memory foam topper) and if you dont turn/shift weight, you'll (I) will be soaked after a few hrs. Pressure. |

Sally, Its not that they make you sweat, although it may a little since you sink in it.. I know if I didnt use one (3"), id wake up soaked since I dont turn in bed on my own, and skin breakdown would eventually occur. The sweating is my bodys reaction for some reason saying turn or burn.
2" may be better. 3" is kind of hard on back if sleep on back. |
I used one of those memory foam mattress' on vaca, and WOW! I was roasting hot all night long. My neighbors have one, and hate it. They say they are hot all night long. they do make ones that are "less warm" according to the lady in the store, but she still admits that most folks claim to be "overly warm" at night. I would never chose one again. I just replaced my mattress with a pillow top.
Since starting Copaxone, I am a night sweater! I hate it! I feel like someone cranked up the furnace. its really hard to sleep if you feel like you are 108 degrees. I have found lighter sheets, and a lighter night gown help, but still...whew! |
