What's on your plate???
I'm leaving shortly for Penn H.S. The Shurbans are putting on their presentation of The Yellow Ribbon Program...talking to high school students about their son's suicide. I saw this years ago at IUSB, put on then by the Emmes, whose son also commited suicide resulting in this ongoing program....
Then onto a meeting by the Prevention Coalition...on the agenda is trying to figure out how to market our new support group. It's a beautiful Fall day and I am hoping to work on the leaves when I get home. What are you all up to??? :grouphug: |
I"m heading into work which has become very stressful these days... seems the choir and one of the new ministers don't see eye to eye and there has been a lot of emotion. Thank goodness I'm only there 20 hrs a week.
I'm also helping some friends who recently purchased an old movie theatre... so I'm off to work there for a couple hours in the evening. I'm keeping up with things but as a result I forget to take of me... ain't that always the way, eh?!!! so, I told the movie friends I would only work 3 times a week, tops (about 6 hrs total) ... and I told them at the church that they have to know what is going on ... being a "rescuer" and liason between all these emotional folk was NOT in my job description... damn it, tho... its in my character to help people.... ahhhhhhhhhhhh to be human is difficult ! Enjoy your day Alffe. I hope the leaves have all blown away by the time you get home :) |
Just enjoying the beautiful fall day we have been given...take a drive...get the front and back door frame work prepared to paint...take a drive...I think the drive will win out!!

Pecan Pie
4 eggs
1 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 stick melted sweet butter 1 tsp vanilla extract (may substitute Rum) 2 cups shelled pecans, chopped 1 9 inch unbaked Piecrust 1/3 cup shelled pecan halves. 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a 9 inch pan with the pastry. 2. Beat eggs well in a large bowl. Add brown sugar, corn syrup, salt, melted butter and vanilla to eggs, mix thoroughly. 3.Sprinkle chopped pecans into pastry lined pan. Pour egg mixture over pecans. Arrange pecan halves around edge of filling next to crust for decoration. 4. Bake on middle rack for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325 and bake for 25 to 30 mins. longer, or until set. Cool to room temperature before serving. |
Now if you're lucky enough to have a good supply of pecans handy...try this receipe from Pat Conroy's wonderful cookbook...
Cocktail Pecans 1 cup sugar 3/4 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg 3/4 tsp cumin 3/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. coarse or kosher salt 2 large egg whites 1 pound pecan halves 1. Prehate oven 325F. 2. In small bowl, stir together the sugar, nutmeg, cumin, black pepper, cayenne, and salt. 3.In another larger bowl, whisk the egg whites until barly frothy. Add nut to the egg whites and turn to coat. 4. Spread the pecans on a baking sheet and place in oven until browned, about 1 hour. Stir occasionally prevent clumping. 5. Place the baking sheet on a rack to cool. Transfer the room temperature nuts to an airtight container. If desired, warm and crisp the nuts in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 minutes before serving. |
Sugar and Spice Nuts
SUGAR & SPICE NUTS
2 cups sugar 1/2 cup water 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cinnamon (I use very heaping measurement of cinnamon) Combine all above in large saucepan and cook over low/medium heat to 236 degrees (soft ball stage) Pour in 2 1/2 (I use almost 3 cups) nuts and stir hard until mixture is creamy (looks sugary). Pour onto waxed paper and separate into clumps with 2 forks. Original recipe called for walnuts but I like pecans. I have made this recipe using a mixture of all the nuts I could find. |
Thank you Wren!!!!

AND in about one hour (1 pm Pacific) - I'm going to be sitting at my computer screen watching the Sweet Adeline Convention Competition and cheer on the top 10 Choruses from around the world. If you've got nothing to do - check it out - you'll be blown away: http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/webcast.cfm Scroll down to Convention Webcast Video - its free and you'll be treated some wonderfully entertaining acapella harmonies! Lions Gate Chorus from Vancouver is where most of my girlfriends sing... (they will be on just after 3 pm Pacific) - boy do I wish I was there! (in Nashville) but I chose to move away... so I just live vicariously now :) :sing: Addy |
