Keep On Moving Club: November 2009

MS sometimes makes it hard to keep moving, exercising, stretching, so we do less and less. Before long, its not just MS that interferes with our mobility and health, its also atrophy of muscle causing more balance problems and more muscle weakness.

So, we started a Club to support and encourage us to keep moving --You use it or you lose it! So, what do you do-- do you stretch, do you walk, swim, aquacise, isometrics, lift free weights, Wii,calisthenics? Please join the club.
!

I swim a mile a day. In 2004, I was so weak, I could not walk across a room. Now I swim a mile every single day and I do free weights twice weekly to help with osteoporosis prevention. Cherie (clinical1) was able to stop using her w/c after she religiously worked on a pool based stretch/exercise routine daily.

What do you do?

BBS1951 11-01-2009 02:10 PM

I just got back from my mile swim and it was soooo nice.

TXBatman 11-01-2009 06:44 PM

Well I fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks because work got so hectic, but I got back on this morning. My wife and I rode in the "tour de donut", which is a 30 mile bike race/ride, where you get 5 mins taken off of your finish time for every donut you eat at one of the two break points. I only ate 4 donuts (they were like little lead bricks in my stomach), but I averaged almost 17.3 mph for ~30 miles and finished with a ride time of 1 hour and 48 mins.

SallyC 11-01-2009 06:46 PM

I did all my stretches and exercise, in readiness for my rowdy Grandkid's visit, today..:D

A little too chilly for swimming, here in Ohio, BBS.. Glad you got your mile in..

karousel 11-01-2009 09:45 PM

I've been raking the leaves but was a little sad today when I realized almost all of the leaves have fallen. Now I need to find another form of exercise to replace the raking. I go for walks but that will end soon too. I do go to the YMCA so maybe I'll throw in some DVD's to keep me moving!

Vonn07 11-02-2009 05:45 PM

hi ...

I keep moving by sitting (when I'm sewing at the sewing machine) ... then I'm cutting/trimming/ironing/pressing (standing) ... then, I sit while I hand sew, paint watercolor or crochet ..

sometimes, I feel like the fidgety-kid in church .. just can't sit still ... then, I stand for awhile .. .then I sit ..

OH, I did climb a chair to change the ceiling kitchen lightbulb today!!

and I learned some 'samari' movements from off of Dr Oz today - I didn't have a sword ... so I used a wooden dowel ... :mf_swordfight:

BBS1951 11-02-2009 06:10 PM

welcome Vonn: I love the samarii idea :)

txbatman: I was wondering where you were! welcome back to the bike :

Sally: Nice job on the stretching

karousel: Let us know what you come up with. Why is walking out now? Are you in a w/c? Or in a flare? Or too much snow? Curious minds want to know :0

I swam my mile today. Florida is still having very warm weather--87 today in fact.

Debbie D 11-02-2009 06:20 PM

Woo-hoo! Legs are feeling better now that I'm off of Crestor...went to work out today!
I did 25 min. on the elliptical, 30 min. of weight training, and then went home and took my furbaby for a 30 min walk.

I'm having surgery on 11/16, and dr. said I can't do any exercise that will involve putting pressure on the pelvic floor muscles for 3 mos...do you have any ideas for how I can work out without using the abs? I think even swimming will put pressure on the pelvic floor muscles.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated:)

freeinhou 11-02-2009 06:22 PM

Let's see. I rode my bike up and down the road a bit a few saturdays ago. Major soreness for 2 days. I'd say I rode maybe 1/4 mile. Pathetic...

I played 18 holes of golf a couple weeks ago. I was pretty sore for a few days after that. The course was wet so it was cart path only and Tennessee has hills.

I'm really out of shape. I had bypass surgery in 3/08 and have been pretty scared to move much since. Not heart bypass - left common iliac artery, right common iliac artery and abdominal aortic artery bypass. I had open hearty surgery to repair a tear in the ascending aortic artery at the heart in 1/04.

I still walk quite a bit. At least a few miles a day.

Tom

Vonn07 11-02-2009 09:03 PM

well, I'll be 'moving' ... really MOVING .. so, I've started to pack in an organized manner!!

will be moving 'totes' to my car to take up to storage ... and hopefully be able to land an apartment to start REALLY moving the month of December ..

probably do most of the shuffle myself .. until I get to the trunks and bed frame ..:OuttaHere:

tkrik 11-03-2009 12:09 AM

Oh carp! I posted in the wrong month. :D I just cut and pasted. . .

This weekend consisted of major housework at DBF's. We are going away and his sister is coming over to watch the dog and cat. I cleaned and detailed the house (1,400 sq. ft.) yesterday and totally overdid it. My legs are so mad at me.

Today I did my morning stretches - Classical Stretch Esmonde Technique. It comes on every morning at 6:30 and I have been trying to keep up with her. LOL

sabimax 11-03-2009 09:54 AM

BBS hubby is in sunny florida this week visiting his parents! lucky ducky!

although sunny and yesterday was 50s wow for here...

took a short walk with the double stroller with two kids in it... now sounds great for me... years ago did 4 miles pushing that ...uggg

today going to take another walk since sunny... off on vacation this week. so getting some stuff done in the house.. but then enjoying the time with the kids.. and the sunshine again today woohoooo

I will do some stretchin too, either basic ones the neuro told me to do daily for my stiff back... and/or some yoga.. I got new yoga dvds to try!!

hugsss all, sarah

BBS1951 11-03-2009 04:02 PM

Debbie, how about walking in the pool? You really did some great work. So nice to be off the statins.

freeinhou: A few miles a day of walking is terrific :) Dont' be so hard on yourself!

Vonn: Moving is such hard work. You will surely get a workout moving!

BBS1951 11-03-2009 04:04 PM

tkrik: I think you are not the only one to do the wrong month :) I love what you said, "My legs are so mad at me " --ha ha.

sabimax: That sounds great :) we have a joke in Florida, "Will the last one's out of Michigan please turn off the lights" as there are so many people from Michigan who now live in florida or at least are snowbirds. Which section of Florida are your in laws in?

I swam my mile today.

ewizabeth 11-03-2009 04:26 PM

Just finished 35 minutes on the elliptical. :)

sabimax 11-03-2009 04:55 PM

BBS, right in Orlando

I did take a walk today with Maddie baby! and bowl three games tonight for league. hugss all, sarah

BBS1951 11-04-2009 06:11 PM

Orlando is a great city. My DH was raised there before Disney came to town, and it was a small town no one ever heard of! Niec walk and bowling sabi :)

Good job on the elliptical ewiz.

I swam a mile today (of course).

ewizabeth 11-04-2009 10:00 PM

I did 22 minutes of Pilates and pushups today. :plain: Sort of boring but I got it done. I should have my new workout DVD's in a day or two.

sabimax 11-05-2009 09:34 AM

hey good morning, vacation time dwindling away, and have a child home sick yesterday and today. I myself after cleaning on tuesday, had asthma attack thru night...hard to breathe stuff going on. I went to drs then yesterday and they gave me a inhaler yeahhhh now breathing much better.

Overtired, as I slept very little last night, but going to do yoga in a bit, one of the new ones.. then maybe I will catch a nap. Suppose to go out to dinner with a friend. yeahhhh

hugss all, sarah

ewizabeth 11-05-2009 04:06 PM

My new workout DVD's arrived. I've been applying for jobs online most of the morning. I need to go buy groceries then I'll come home and try one out. ;) :Dancing-Chilli:

I got the following titles:

Express Belly Blast :D

I Want That BODY! :D

Just Dance & Get Fit :Dancing-Chilli:

Mari Winsor Pilates (she's my favorite!)

I'll try one later on then post my time and a review. :winky:

Debbie D 11-05-2009 04:52 PM

Now that the legs are hurting less since going off of cholesterol drug, took the furbaby for a nice walk...so beautiful out!! My furbaby looked up at me, seemingly in a blissful state. I felt the same!
This afternoon I had to fill a tub with water and mix in dechlorinator, then drag the tub over to the pond and dump it into the fish pond; the water level was getting too low. Hope it doesn't disturb the fish. Anyway, I was pooped after dragging that huge tub over to the pond 4 times. Whoo...now resting.

BBS1951 11-05-2009 06:09 PM

That surely is a lot of work Debbie!

Good going ya'll. I cannot hit each post, gotta go cook. BUt I did swim a mile this morning. Later--

TXBatman 11-06-2009 01:29 AM

Got a couple of days worth of workouts to catch up on here. But first, the results are in, and my "donut adjusted time" from Sunday was good enough to put me at 57th out of around 230 guys who had timing chips. My wife was 13th out of 47 women, so Bravo for her as well!

So back to the workouts...Spinning tuesday night for the first time in almost three weeks and WOW was it harder than I thought to get back into it. Did 1 hour and 5 minutes with a max HR of 95% of max and an average of 77% of max for 954 calories burned.

Spinning again tonight was slightly easier, mainly because it was shorter...45 minutes, 92% of max, avg 82% of max, and 752 calories burned.

Going to try to get in a class tomorrow afternoon because we have other obligations this weekend and I won't be riding.

sabimax 11-06-2009 11:19 AM

TX how do you do it!! I mean spinning... whenever I do something too high aerobic.. or high rate... I get too overheated.. come off dizzy and balance issues... so avoid it now...even long fast paced walks.. which I miss..

might have to start walking faster and longer gradually and keep the phone on me.. just hate side effects for just walking lol

I did do yoga this morning, I woke in SEVERE back spasms pain....:( here on vacation from work.. so doing less and still pain lol... the yoga though I kept getting like tightness around trunk that was bothersome...and my right leg kept cramping up...darn when you want to work out....

I have a massage scheduled today, so that worked out since back is problem today... going to tell her of the spasms.. and ask her to focus more on back than anything.... she massages each area...thru the hour...

wish I could afford the massage more often... or insurance would cover but does not. I only get one every few months...hugssss keep moving all... I may take a walk later...with kids or alone not sure hehe

I wish I knew why I was so lucky. I would export it to everybody else ASAP.

I do have to be careful about overheating...I put my spin bike right under one of the fans in the room when I setup, and when I ride outdoors in the heat, I usually carry one water bottle for the express purpose of pouring it over my head to cool off periodically.

But with that said, even when I do overheat, all I do is get weaker and slower...I am just lucky I guess in that it doesn't make me lose my balance or anything.

BBS1951 11-06-2009 03:23 PM

Those are good tips TxBatman.

Sabi, I hope that you feel better soon.

I swam a mile this morinng as the sun came up.

ewizabeth 11-06-2009 07:44 PM

Ok, I did my new dance workout (which is hard because I have two left feet, lol) I spent 35 minutes fumbling through it but got a good workout anyway. :D

tkrik 11-07-2009 10:12 AM

LOL Wiz!!! I am that way with my Classical Stretch. Too funny. But it is fun and a good workout.:p

In a flare so haven't done anything except simple stretches throughout the day and night to help with the bad spasms.

Looking forward to getting back on my regular program.;)

sabimax 11-07-2009 11:31 AM

lets see.. massage helped wonderful, she hit right spots, gave me some more stretching tips. And advice as so the spasms do not tighten me too much to damage stuff. we had a long talk.

last night though, I was in excruciating pain, very very bad in back.. from neck to lower back spasms galore.. tingling just terrible stuff. tears...

woke this morning, hurting but not too too bad, did a 60min yoga tape.. one for longevity.. in case I want to live to 99 in pain lol....

anyhow, lots of good stretching and relaxing stuff in it, so it was rewarding... sun is shining now.. so might take the girls for a short walk.

Thanks for sharing your biking info and good tips...

hugss to all, sarah

BBS1951 11-07-2009 04:22 PM

sabi, I am sorry you are having such difficulty. Does Valium help the muscles relax?

tkrik: I hope your flare eases off soon.

NIce dancing ewiz.

I swam a mile today after my swine flu shot. I cannot believe I was able to get the shot.

ewizabeth 11-07-2009 08:35 PM

Today I raked and bagged leaves for an hour. It was 70 degrees and sunny so I had to wear shorts and a tank top to keep cool! :) That has to be a first for me in November in N. Illinois, lol. There have been past Novembers where we have snow all month long! :)

Tomorrow I'm going to finish bagging the leaves and find more work to do out there while this good weather lasts. :D

BBS1951 11-08-2009 02:59 PM

Wow! So warm for your region ewiz. Good raking weather.

I swam a mile today: the pool was too cold though.

sabimax 11-08-2009 06:38 PM

well I have tramadol for the pain too, but take it only occasionally...

well I did do that walk to park yesterday, it hit 70 degrees in the U.P. of Michigan that is amazing for November yeahhhh

came home, so nice out, I took a tramadol for the back pain, and layed out for over hour on lawn chair in yard... it was sooooooooo relaxing.... well

when I went to stand up started feeling dizzy, thought maybe the tramadol... but nope one of my dizzy spell things happening... so I came inside.. still dizzy if moving.. layed on couch... stuck there from 330pm-10pm last night.. got up and crawled up the stairs to bed.. still dizzy!!

woke today no dizzies but back is just so sore.... I did take the girls bowling.. although I did not bowl due to back. I am about to do some evening yoga... just easy stretching kind... hugsss all, sarah

(here when I have a dizzy spell neuro wanted me to take a migrane pill right at onset of dizziness... I did not try it because I thought the dizzies were from the tramadol... oh well next time... he just wants to see if the dizzies that come with right eye blurry stuff..could possibly be a sort of migrane.. the pill is one you take within first hour of sxs... and see if it lessens the dizzies...drats)

hugsss all, sarah

ewizabeth 11-08-2009 09:07 PM

Aw Sarah,

I'm sorry about the pain and dizziness. I hope the migraine meds help it next time it happens. I had migraines for many years but no more, thank goodness.

Today I cooked and cleaned kitchen and did chores for about 5 1/2 hrs so no workout. Tomorrow maybe, depending on my schedule.

sabimax 11-09-2009 09:52 AM

Wiz, I do not think it is migranes, but neuro either, but he wants to test the idea out.. just in case the dizzies could be that.... ruling things out as we still go long on this mission of my health... numb/tingling and stuff started what 10 years ago now... way too long for being undx huh!!

well, did some yoga last night, relaxing stretch evening one... going to do yoga this morning... and at least a short walk... or since sun is shining maybe a long walk today!! few more days of vacation... dwindling away... back to work wednesday!

hugss all, keep moving thru your day... hugss, sarah

BBS1951 11-09-2009 12:30 PM

Sabi and Ewiz, you both are doing your best to stay fit.

Sabi, it's amazing how much you are moving, even though you feel so bad.

I swam a mile today in a freezing pool. Brrrrrr. No fun.

sabimax 11-09-2009 02:48 PM

Thx BBS, my back hurts more when laying down or sitting around! plus probably focus on it more too. So keep going..

Maddie and I did walk today, and went to the beach, played in the sand... wonderful!! hugssss, sarah

ewizabeth 11-09-2009 06:33 PM

I used the elliptical for 35 minutes and it felt good. :)

I had the patio door open for fresh air. Rocky kept climbing the screen, going after a bug. I really need to replace the screen mesh, it's been about 18 years and Rocky's doing a number on it. I hope I can get some heavy duty material, since he has ferociously large claws.

SallyC 11-09-2009 07:14 PM

Happy to see us all moving right along, in spite of our pains..:grouphug:

tkrik 11-10-2009 08:56 AM

Did 10 minutes of yoga stretches this morning. I'll do another 10 before my nap and another 10 before bed. Trying not to over do it and ease my way back in to my normal routine.
