Thanksgiving ideas

Well Thanksgiving is only a couple of days away...Pumpkin Pie...yum...with lots of whipped cream on top.
What do you do to make this holiday easier? Especially when everyone is coming to your house?
My daughters are going to help me. But I'm going to be doing some stuff, and am trying to figure it all out.
Actually this should have been "Holiday ideas" Cause Christmas is right around the corner.
Any great recipes out there?
I'm Thankful for All of You!!!!:grouphug:

This is my first Holiday season since I got sick...but my hubby and Mother in Law will be doing all of the cooking...I did however see pretty much everything you could imagine already made and ready to heat at Costco.... as far as having a clean house...I say clean? whats that, hehe....if my hubby can't do it, it won't get done...I'm just thankfull this year to be here and to be able to enjoy my family. It wasn't that long ago that I seriously thought I would be long gone by Thanksgiving.

Jess, I know what you mean. This Thanksgiving is going to be special to me as well. This pass January, I died right after surgery. Went into resp. failure. Took a while for them to get me to come around.
I feel so thankful.
We don't have a Cosco, but we have other stores that offer all kinds of premade dishes.
I think the most important part is being together. And then a Good Pumpkin Pie, chilled ofcourse!:p
We're going to try to make Martha Stewarts Apple/blackberry pie. It looks so good.
I even have the leaf cookie cutter for the crust.
It's so sweet how your husband is going to make the turkey. Um, here in my house, we don't trust my husband with the turkey, Not until it's on the table, as we'd have to serve it bald! He's a skin eater:rolleyes:.

Wow Lizzie, a Martha Stewart pie! I just roll out Pillsbury's ready made pie crust, follow the directions on a can of Libby's pumkin pie mix and put it in the oven;)

Hugs,
Pat

Lizzie & Jess this holiday season will definitely be special for the both of you. Our health is #1 in importance but I think pie comes a close second. :) What ever can be done to minimize the stress of the holidays is worth it. Time with family and friends is so much more important than using our strength and energy to clean. I am sure nobody really notices anyway. Take care ~ Melanie

Well I won't be celebrating Thanksgiving, as we don't here in Australia. I have however added to my "bucket list", visiting America one day, and seeing what a real live Thanksgiving is like. It may take a while tho!!!

You know, I was thinking about that today, about those who live in other countries, especially those we left. I was thinking that those in the United Kingdom, could celebrate us leaving, and we can celebrate us surviving :Scratch-Head:

For everyone else, you could just enjoy the week, and everyone can find something for which to be Thankful, right?

In all seriousness, the Cyber world is big, and not all of us will be celebrating all holidays, or doing all the traditions that are out there, but I wish all of you a very wonderful healthy week, and that you feel God's Blessings on you!
Much Love Lizzie

totally off topic memorries.

I know this is totally off topic, but when you guys talk about thanksgiving it brings back such sweet memorries that I thought I should share.

I am not a US citizen, but we lived in the US for a few years, when I did my residency in internal medicine.

when my son was 5 years old, he came home really excited and told me that he has this form, they gave him at school, and if he draws a nice turkey picture, he is going to get a turkey from "fresh fields" (a very expensive organic product posh store), so he sat all afternoon and drew a really amazing colorful picture of the most beautiful turkey I have ever seen (and he was not a drawing kind of kid normally), and then he urged me to go to the store, and get the turkey for him.

when we got there, I realized that this was a contest and they were only going to give one turkey to the best picture they recieve. so how do you explain this to an enthusiastic 5 year old, who is eagerly awaiting for his turkey?

well, you don't (at least I didn't). I just went and got the best looking turkey in the store, and paid a fortune for it from my hard earned money. and believe me the happy look in his eyes, was worth every penny!!

but, then we arrived home, I realized that I have a very expensive turkey that I don't even know what I should do with, as I have never baked a turkey before. so I thought about it for a while and then decided that just like I find answers to problems that arise during my practice, by searching the relevant literature, I will do the same.

as funny as it may sound, I took a day off from work, and searched for the best recipes I could find, for preparing a turkey, stuffing and all the rest of the thanksgiving food. and I found a site where the best US chefs, gave the recipes they liked most. those were very complicated and required a lot of hours of work, but I thought that my son deserves it.

we invited some friends over, and after me and my son worked all day, preparing those dishes, we all had a real feast.

Alice, what a sweet story! I love children so much, I'm tellin' ya, if my body would have let me, I'd probably have an entire litter of them. But am very blessed to have my two girls.
Just such a sweet story!

hi

Happy Thanks Giving to those of you celebrating it on Thursday!

I understand what you mean about preparing things for the meal as I have to do that with Christmas dinner. I have to admit I pretty much cheat as much as I can, so frozen roast potatoes, frozen yorkshire puds, frozen turkey joint ( only hubs eats meat in this house) I get my mum to make me a nut roast, the only thing I usually make from scratch is my red wine gravy!

This year as Hubs is off Christmas Eve we will (he will!) be preparing the fresh veg and leaving it in cold water until the following day. (its the only time we do that as we know the vitamins from the veg leach into the water). Ive decided on a cheese souffle for my xmas dinner as thats easy to do.

We both aren't too keen on xmas pudding so we are having apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. Again the crumble will be prepared the day before.

So Im all for making it easy. Theres only the two of us Christmas day and I normally see my parents boxing day.

Alice that story was so sweet! I remember the first time I cooked turkey (I'd grown up in a vegetarian house hold) I was so scared and didn't have a clue what to do!

Love
Rach

What a lovely memory, thanks for sharing it Alice.

redtail 11-25-2009 01:58 AM

Thanks Alice for that gorgeous story.

Rach down here in Aussie land its usually about 35C Chrissy day, so I am lucky as I prepare the turkey(well a rolled frozen thigh) a day before so its a cold meat, and have loads of salads and prawns. Dessert is usually a Pavlova, fruit salad(mmmm fresh cherries) I'd love to enjoy a hot christmas lunch in a cold country.
Ooops have I hijacked a thread again.
Hope everyone celebrating Thanksgiving has a wonderful day

awesome thread

what a great thread.

mouth watering food from around the world (never thought that in australia christmas is in the summer?), great holiday memories.

and you know what, I am going to celebrate thanksgiving with my family.
after all we have been in the US for quite a few years, so I can be seen as 1/4 american.

happy thanksgiving to you all, and may we all have a lot to be thankful for, this year, and the years to come.

I've enjoyed reading all your posts. Thanks, Lizzie.

I'm spending my T-Day on puppy watch, due to inflammatory bowel. So it doesn't really matter what day it is when a "child" is sick.

I haven't spent Thanksgiving with my family in a few years. It's too hard. Due to celiac, I have to bring some of my own food. And I'm too worn out this year to even make my gluten-free pumpkin pie.

So I'm trying to enjoy whatever it is that I'm doing today. The pie can wait until Christmas.

Annie
