stomach upset/alpha lipoic

I have been having some stomach trouble anyway but if I try to do to many supplements it seems to get worse. I think it is the alpha lipoic. Does anyone else have this trouble. The other supplements I take are fish oil, ALC, NAC, Bentofomide(recently), ubiquinol, d3, allone multi powder. Thanks.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid puts upsets my stomach as well and puts me in left field big time to where I can't process. I tryed over and over to take it with food and other methods. Since ALA is such a robust chelator, I personally think it is trying to pull metal out that is stubborn and that is what's giving me the hard time. It really turns me into a vegetable, I have a serious (detox??)reaction every time I take it. In addition to it spiking my reflux. Ubiquinol can have a milder but similar effect after taking(I take this a couple times a week). I use GliSODin, Pomegranate, Selenium and Grape Seed extract as well as others like NAC, Curcumin and Holy Basil here and there. Starting to take Vitamin C again as well.

I tried the R form of lipoic acid and got a very intense digestive attack along w/ diarrhea. Since I have IBS, I just figured it was that but on reflection, the pain and cramps were not like those of "normal" IBS. I wish I could continue with it since it seems to help so many. I wonder if there's an injectable form...maybe bypass the GI tract.

I don't get any upset with r-lipoic acid. In fact it is very energizing. I had to start slow with 50mg because it revved me up so much. Now I use 100mg a day.

Make sure you take your supplements with enough water, so they dissolve properly. You can take them with food also.

Alpha lipoic requires much higher doses daily than r-lipoic because part of it is not biologically active. It is a combination of racemic lipoic. The smaller doses of r-lipoic are easier to tolerate.
I wonder if some filler is in that and is to blame? I have such a sensitive system, and r-lipoic does not bother me at all.

Try to space them out during the day, homer. And make sure you drink a full glass of water, so they dissolve well and move along. Carnitine has a diarrhea warning in really high doses like 10 grams. At lower 500mg a day, it should be much easier.

Lipoic acid can certainly cause stomach reactions--

--it is, well, strongly acidic.

As Mrs. Dnotes, one is better off taking it after a meal, with a lot of water, to help buffer the acid effect if oneis subject to it. And I have personally found significantly less reaction with the R-lipoic form conmpared to alpha, as one can take that in much smaller quantities for the same salutary effect.

The only exception to taking with food...is B12. This is best taken alone, on an empty stomach, with nothing to follow for at least an hour.

Also, I have noticed that the new supplements I am trying...
l-arginine and l-citrulline cause heartburn for me regardless of when I take them. They are HUGE tablets, I can barely swallow them, but I can't escape the heartburn. It is worse on an empty stomach, and I can't take them at all at bedtime.

Mrs. D, Both Now Foods and Source Naturals offer the powdered form of L-Arginine and L-Citrulline through iHerb. I was getting good results as far as my feet not being so cold until I got an intestinal bug a couple of days ago and discontinued usage temporarily. I mix the L-Arginine in juice because it tastes so bad, but when I run out of those gigantic horse pills (L-Citrulline), I'm going to order the powder. My stomach hasn't reacted yet to the powder. Joan

Thanks, Joan. I will switch to the powders, when my horse sized tablets are gone. The heartburn is not 24/7...and is better when I take them earlier in the day, with more water than usual.

So far I am liking this intervention. My hands and feet are not so cold anymore. And the burning in my muscles has gone away.
I am still guarded about high dose arginine tho, because of its connection to viral replication. So people with dormant viruses may have problems with it.

I think the citrulline is what helps the muscles. It is supposed to remove ammonia which may build up in the muscles over time.

Thanks for the advice MrsD, I also have burning in my muscles and you think the l citrulline has helped. how long did you take it to get this effect? I have been reading about how a form of small vessel vasculitis appears with levaquin poisoning. Do you know of any supplements that help that, I was thinking about opening a new thread to ask that. Thanks.

mrsD 11-26-2009 03:55 PM

Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels.

The only hints I have seen are from Dr. Cohen...that link I gave you before. Most of what I have seen about this toxicity is that it is "irreversible"... but then, no one gives details about trying things to help either. Dr. Cohen is the only one who has posted some things people have sent him.

The Levaquin is related to Cipro. Here is the wiki on that explaining toxicity of Cipro (I would assume it is similar).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciprofloxacin

The citrulline removes ammonia from muscle metabolism that builds up. I started it to help my blood pressure...and it is working, but slowly. My pressure was much better at the doctor's yesterday. (I've been using it about 6wks). Body builders use it too.

I found this information at Dr. Ignarro's website:
http://www.drignarro.com/

Acetyl Carnitine will help with some muscle issues too.

My c-reactive protein really jumped with this root canal I've been fighting with. Its been a terrible month for me. I had just had a test of 1.0, and it changed to 1.5 .. Doctor said it was most likely the root canal inflammation. I have to have it redone in 6mos.

You can take the amino acid supplement Lysine in equal portion to the L-Arginine and should be fine.

mrsD 11-27-2009 04:09 PM

Yes, I know, thank you. I am still researching this intervention.
