Glass 1/2 full or 1/2 empty?

Which are you?

I'm a glass 1/2 empty person...now before you start booing and hissing there are some benefits to being what I would call grounded and realistic. :D

I'm hyper-vigilent in making sure I don't leave anything to chance. I rarely do denial and that helps me get things done. I'm also not often disappointed when things turn to crud because in the back of my mind I kind of expect it.

The downside would be that I'm only moderately content in this lifetime because I see the world as kind of harsh.

Dejibo 12-02-2009 09:25 PM

I am a glass is 1/2 full kinda gal.

I too leave little to chance, and make sure my bases are covered. I hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, then celebrate when it was somewhere inbetween the two.

some days its harder to look on the bright side, but most days I manage it.

SallyC 12-02-2009 09:34 PM

I'm with you, Jules. :)

doydie 12-02-2009 10:15 PM

I'm the glass 1/2 full but my husband is the glass 1/2 empty so I don't know what that makes us as a couple. I guess one that is prepared most of the time!

That's me and my DH too!!!

ewizabeth 12-02-2009 10:35 PM

I'm always, always glass half full. :D There's just no point in being any other way! (At least for me.) ;)

tkrik 12-02-2009 10:40 PM

Glass? What glass? I guess mine is still empty. LOL

I never think about whether the glass is 1/2 full or empty. I guess it would depend on the day.

Blessings2You 12-03-2009 05:45 AM

I'm with tkrik, depends on the day. I so WANT to be the glass half full person, and that's what I believe intellectually AND spiritually. I would say that's who I am most of the time. Look on the bright side.

But some days that stupid glass is half full no matter how many ways I look at it.

My husband is more "If there really IS anything in the glass, it will probably kill us all."

PolarExpress 12-03-2009 08:57 AM

Yeah...They don't let me have glasses anymore. I keep droppin' them.:D

AfterMyNap 12-03-2009 09:15 AM

Because it's there!

TXBatman 12-03-2009 10:11 AM

I guess I am the type that would say if you can't figure out if the glass is half full or half empty, you clearly have a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be.

Truth be told though, I was a relentless half empty kind of guy when I was in my teens, and somewhere along the way in college I just switched. I have been a relentlessly half full type ever since.

Kitty 12-03-2009 10:42 AM

I'm a half-full kind of person. It's hard sometimes.....really hard. But I can't help but think that there is always a worse situation than the one I'm in at any given moment.

Silly Wiz, I mean that I just don't concern myself with these things, today is all I get and it's up to me to fill it. I don't have the energy to be down, it's just too wearying. ;)

SallyC 12-03-2009 12:13 PM

I'm getting myself a bigger/smaller glass..:D

ewizabeth 12-03-2009 12:19 PM

Oops, somebody handed me a dribble glass. ;)

Thats what I'm talking about! :D

DM 12-03-2009 02:12 PM

Guess that's why I use Dixie Cups, Jules. The jury is still out on which 1/2 of my glass is full and which is empty. H e l p!

Debbie D 12-03-2009 03:54 PM

I need a Tommy Tippee glass...

I guess it depends what the subject is if the glass is 1/2 empty or full. If it's political, completely empty...if it's regular people, 1/2 full.

But I can look so on the full side that I can seem gullible. For instance, at dinner one evening, one of my smart aleck kids said, "Did you hear? They took the word gullible out of the dictionary."
I wailed, "But why?"
The kids still laugh when they recall that...

I can so see some things as half full that I can be taken advantage of easily...so when charities come a knockin' I have to be careful...

kicker 12-03-2009 04:05 PM

There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!

I'm with terry pratchett and kicker on this one. My glass was FULL and it was the biggest one. Offer me a half full one and it aint mine.

I met Terry once. He was nice. and funny.

kicker 12-04-2009 06:32 PM

Pud's Friend,
I envy you getting to meet him. I met a very drunk Liza Minelli in an elevator (back when we both were much younger) and I feared she was about to throw up on my shoes!!

Ponygirl 12-04-2009 07:44 PM

To all of you, "glass, half full", people!!!!!!

:(How do you do it??? This damned Depression, just, won't let me!!!:(

Riverwild 12-04-2009 08:24 PM

My glass is waaaay bigger than anyone else's glass and if it gets down to half empty I always go fill it up again...

I keep a shaker top on it so's it doesn't spill.

That's my half-glassed answer!

Well there is your start. You note that you are down.

You get mad about it and set your mind to changing it. Do some introspection, pray if that's your thing. Ask somebody you trust what your strong points are, and how to use them to get you through this.

It's all about coping mechanisms.

One thing I do when I am really in a dark place is to not do things that aggravate that. I do not read the news (too many bad things upset me) don't hang around negative people, write my gripes, then erase as much as I can instead of keeping it. To keep it is to own it, to me.

Next thing, is to look for any little thing that is good - a pretty bird, butterfly, flower. A cute puppy, sweet little kids, a great old song.

Then I try to joke about what ever is stressing me. You know how kids will bully each other? I never was one to pick on other kids, but I will bully my problems, it does make me feel stronger than them. It makes them seem small, if I can laugh about them.

I'm sure you can find one thing today that was worth getting up for. sometimes the glass starts off with just a drop in it, and you have to work pretty hard to fill it.

Excellent advice! Please continue trying whatever possible including professional assistance and antidepressant medications. Live is too short and too brutal to be sad.

Although I'm cynical and even a tad bitter I'm not depressed about my 1/2 empty glass. It doesn't make me depressed it just kind of makes me roll my eyes and figure this world is just bound to ride me pretty hard. In a way it makes me more scrappy and fight harder.

SandyC 12-05-2009 11:21 AM

I just drink what's in the glass. Problem solved. :D

SallyC 12-05-2009 12:41 PM

Besides, it's a PITA to keep that dang glass filled. :D

kicker 12-05-2009 03:59 PM

Sometimes I have to switch from cranberry to OJ or water. Beer makes me pee, so never that.
