UTI from H***/Heck

It won't go away. Lab tests can't grow any specific bacteria to try to eradicate. PCP trying 4th course of antibiotics, Augmentin. I know it's still there, both PCP and I suspect retaining involved, I'm making Urology appt. with Johns Hopkins affiliated people. Self-cathing may be recommended but can I do that with my use of only one hand? PCP says she doesn't know. In-dwelling cath and increased risk of infection looking bad to me. A home health aide? Hate the thought, don't want anyone around all day, let alone cathing me. I'm engaging in a bout of angry tears at this situation. MS sucks. Oh, and tomorrow is my 54 birthday. Old, can't walk, cathing, well it all just sucks.

Kitty 12-29-2009 09:47 AM

 Hope you get better real soon, Kicker. MS does bite the big one, doesn't it?

SallyC 12-29-2009 11:55 AM

54??? You're just a baby. I was 15 when you were born. Now if that doesn't cheer you up. nothing will.:D

UTIs suck the big one! Feel better soon, please.

SandyC 12-29-2009 12:09 PM

Kicker, have they considered home health IV antibiotics? When Jim is resistant to oral antibiotics that is the course he takes. His doctor tries to put him in the hospital but Jim manages to convince him otherwise if he doesn't have a fever. Insurance usually will pay for home health for IV because it's cheaper.

Either way, I hope you get some relief soon.

kicker 12-29-2009 12:23 PM

Sandy, I take what you say so seriously, I know you've had experience. Seeing "one the best (receptionist says) JH urologists, PCP has contacted those she considers expert
(MS) on the subject, ordered up new antibiotic. My goal is to follow directions and cath and take antibiotics as prescribed. This sucks.

DM 12-29-2009 02:21 PM

I'm doing Augmentin, don't know if when I stop taking it, it'll have destroyed UTI from H*** but it feels a little better down there. Slept 10 to almost 6!!!!!!! Will continue it until no pills are left, seeing Urologist on 7th because want to avoid this as much as possible ever again.

Got a box of really good chocolates this morning from DH, need to hide from DD and DS before they're up. They'd eat them all!!!!! They call it sharing, unless it's theirs, then there's little sharing.

Riverwild 12-30-2009 08:43 AM

I TRULY feel for you on this one!

Now that I know what it feels like, I cannot imagine having one that lasts as long as yours has. I hope that you finally find relief and that you come out healthy, happy, free from pain, and without those darned non-specific bacteria!!!

( and that you have a Happy Birthday too!! :) )

SallyC 01-02-2010 07:16 PM

Kicky, sweety, how are you feeling? Any better?

Aarcyn 01-03-2010 12:27 PM

Riverwild 01-05-2010 07:35 PM

Feeling any better. Kick?

kicker 01-06-2010 07:50 AM

I did a XO strip this morning out of curiousity. It still turns purple (Leukocytes indicator), Purple, but not as dark as it's been. See Urologist tomorrow, PCP expects report from him, hope between the two they'll come up with a plan. I don't feel bad but I don't feel good. Is it the UTI or MS or age? Who knows.SIL says she sent package for my birthday (the 30th), have I gotten it? (no) Life is like that all around, you know?

Grammie 2 3 01-06-2010 04:03 PM

Sorry you've been so miserable. Hope you are on the mend :)

On a new Antibiotic, feel better but always do on ABs.
On 27th have a Urodynamic workup - sounds like I should come out dynamic with a superpower but no. Sure will be lots of invasive things I'll never want to discuss. My sister and friend sent me a present because I have UTI from Heck. That part I like.

Debbie D 01-11-2010 05:34 PM

I think you may have broken a record for the longest-running UTI...
hope the ABs work quickly:hug:

kicker 01-11-2010 06:46 PM

Will there be a prize?

tamiloo 01-12-2010 02:30 AM

So sorry to hear about your UTI from, well you know where. My Olhipie had a UTI that lasted him for about five months...nothing helped! The doc decided that the bacteria had become part of his body, I guess you could call it colonized.

About 14 years ago he had a indwelling cath put in. He had leakage problems. Four years ago he had a Suprapubic cath and he has only had only had maybe five UTI's in four years!

Your body might be trying to own that bacteria! I hope you can find some answers soon!!

SandyC 01-12-2010 10:31 AM

Depending on how you feel it could be that the bacteria has colonized. That means it has become part of you and the body isn't fighting it anymore. This is fine but there is a higher chance of it turning into another UTI in the future. Jim got to the point where he was resistant to all oral antibiotics. We discussed with the doctor what to do and we decided to stop all meds and see what happened. Turned out he was colonized and he's fine now. But again, if any symptom pops up we have to run in and get a culture. He is also on a maintenance antibiotic, Macrobid.

Hope this round of antibiotic helps you!

Lady 01-15-2010 01:24 AM

Kicker I can't believe you're still are fighting that UTI from heck. That is a long time. Have they checked your kidneys? The problem might be higher up and you might need a different test. Ever have Kidney stones?

I wish you luck with the Uro-testing. I am surprised they would do that test with an infection. It is only measuring, not scoping.

Good luck with it all. I hope you aren't in much pain with this.

kicker 01-15-2010 08:34 AM

On 27th a kidney ultrasound is scheduled. I have no pain, from trying to go with hesitation, I suspect (as Doctor does) I am not emptying completely and making "soup". On 5th (?) try of antibiotics. I feel better on them but don't think UTI is gone.

SallyC 01-15-2010 11:08 AM

I have to squeeze my bladder, to empty. If I forget to do that, then here comes a UTI. :(
