Come on up on the porch...talking bout food

Everybody loves food, I bet you the Godiva gems you can't think of one person that does not like food. Tofu is a food honey, I know it looks and tastes like a used loofa sponge but it is food. Food is the topic of most conversations, I don't eat this or I don't eat that. I can't eat this because it makes my butt look big. I'm allergic is a more acceptable response to keep from sounding vain or down right rude.

Well guess I'm not allergic to any food but I sho nuff as Baptists go to church on Sunday hear alot about food. Why just look at all the pills, cleanse teas, diet foods, and all those other things telling you what is good for a body and what ain't. I might would be more inclined to believe it, except that I grew up with great aunts and uncles that lived to be well past eighty, most into their nineties. My grandmother is getting closer to 102 every day. These old folks ate fried everything, rice, potatoes or whatever they wanted.

I was watching that ole tellie and here pops up some fool telling me that Alli will help be more conscious in watching what I eat. HUH? I am conscious of what I eat and I watch it as it goes in my mouth. I see people from the ole school days, etc. and they say 'you used to be so skinny', I smile and say politely I have HTM disease. They get this really stunned look and then they tell me they thought I have MS. I smile, oh that too...then they get home to Google it to find out if its contagious or terminal. For those of you that have never heard the term...equal to Hand To Mouth disease.:p

I am totally fine with people eating healthy food, I don't have a problem with people eating no meat, you can eat whatever you like and I will even cook it for you. However, don't tell me I shouldn't eat that piece of cake or fry my potatoes. You don't want to eat that, that's your choice, I eat what I prefer. I've been skinny, still ate what I wanted and I was healthy and if I wanted to be skinny now, I would.

Think of all the chemicals that been poured into the air, water, land, and even products used in foods for processing. Yeah, that might account for ninety plus percent of health issues. I like food, my family likes the food I cook and they are healthy. I don't load them up on sugar and I use moderate amounts of salt with healthy doses of herbs and spices.

You won't find the right kind of food for you every where you go, probably not most places you do go...but here on the porch, you pick what you want, cooked just as you want it. You want sugar in your cookies or rather have splenda...its fine. You need somewhere to go where you feel at home because you are you, not because of what other people think you should be. You are special and should be appreciated for your character, your compassion, your honesty and your friendship.
So who is eating what tonight, do you want fries with that?:)

Growing up in the South......food was the focal point of every event. My fondest memories are of the breakfast table at Mimi's old farm house in N.C.. Country ham, red eye gravy, biscuits (the homemade little silver dollar sized ones), homemade pear preserves, "Mimi toast" which was just bread toasted in the oven since Mimi didn't own a toaster, and real butter.

Nobody ever scolded anyone for eating too much. But you would get scolded if you didn't eat enough!

I've heard of HTM disease! :D I know alot of people who have it.....but they don't "suffer" from it! My Dad used to tell me certain people had Dunlap Disease. Their tummy had done lapped over their belt! :D

Momma's Kids 01-26-2010 08:06 PM

Or woodworker syndrome...my chest has fallen into my drawers:D

I usually eat what I'm craving. Lately, it's raw veggies and dip, field greens with cherry tomatoes and a fig/walnut vinaigrette or baked Italian chicken breast. During the holidays, it was all sugar... divinity, fudge, chocolate pie. I have to have my Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale with lunch. :D

:D Dunlap disease...that's what my Daddy had ever winter...when he couldn't work due to weather! Come summer he'd shrink back to his 32 waist size. :D

trying to diet here so of course I'm attracted to anything food...dragging myself up on the porch, without my floatation device. *grin

Yep been on a diet and what ever exercise I can get, for almost 3 weeks. Lost 20+ lbs so far. Now my boat will go faster. Hey dont forget the Duct tape illness.

Yes Momma, we are settling in to our new home and just waiting for the start of a complete renovation. The house will be adapted totally for wheel chair accessibility by the Veterans Administration. Pics will come soon.

Keep on eating!!

:Good-Post:

Seems to me if the man upstairs did not want us to enjoy the food he would not have put us in the land of plenty.

The trick is knowing the difference between plenty and enough! :D

Do you ever get in a food cooking rut?

I feel like I am having one, can't seem to get enthused about cooking up anything new, just same old stuff:(

Yes. Whenever I go to the grocery store I try to buy different things.....mix it up a bit......but I just seems to always get the same old things. Guess I feel safe with things I know we like and I know how to fix. Plus, I just don't have the money to experiment and possibly fix something we don't like. I will try new things if I have a good coupon to go along with a sale.

I did make spring rolls this afternoon:D
dh liked them.
I had to use wonton wrappers - that was all the store had, I didn't want to stop at another store since I had done a lot of errands already.

I think I'll put more veggies in them next time.
I made the dipping sauce too. it was good.

My private Chef (Schwans) cook all my gourmet meals now. Some are low in calories...some are not.:D "Me Worry?" :p

I grew up on a farm, and there was always plenty of food about, afternoon tea when we came home from school was always home made biscuits or cakes or fruit fresh from the orchard. I developed a love of cooking from my Mum and a love of eating all on my own.

Yesterday I made 24 small pies, beef and guinness, and beef and mushroom, all with homemade pastry on the bottoms and puff pastry on the tops.
Some will go to my Sister and some to my Dad, who lives in a nursing home, and hates Friday fish day, so I make the pies for him instead.
I love to cook to give away, its always such a pleasure, and means my waist stays slightly thinner than if I kept it all!!

braingonebad 01-31-2010 08:18 AM

Putting it out there - I hate cooking. I only do it because I eat. I hate it and I'm not good at it and if anybody else wants to cook, the stove is yours. I'll even wash the dishes.

My dream house has enough kitchen space for a coffee pot and a microwave.

Maybe that's why I like travelling and hotel rooms.

Momma's Kids 01-31-2010 11:13 AM

I don't mind the cooking part, its the cleaning part. lol

My DD inherited mine and her grandmother's cook gene, she loves to do it and does it well...she also inherited my 'hates the clean up part'.

I will cook different things, most are my recipes...like the sausage pasta dish.
Easy, quick and very good...not heart healthy, which is why I only cook it a few times.

braingonebad 01-31-2010 11:23 AM

I used to hate the cleaning part too. But when we all lived together for a while - before I was grown and out - my ex-SIL said this one night after dinner...

"Only special people get to be in the kitchen, after the meal is served, doing the washing up. You know you're special if they *let* you come in, talk, listen."

I got it - she felt like part of the family. I felt like one of the grown ups.

It's no fun, granted, standing alone with your hands in hot water night after night. But I have to admit I always enjoy being part of that after dinner girls-only chat. We always have fun even if we are scrubbing pots.

We still say that here, that only special people get to do dishes.

Momma's Kids 01-31-2010 09:43 PM

Brain...the problem is that I don't let people help do the cooking or the cleaning. My GM told me from a young age, when you invite someone to eat with you, are you going to make them pay for their meal? lol

I took her seriously, although, my mother, aunts, etc always helped with the cleanup when I was growing up.

I do miss those huge family dinners, oh wait, I still have a huge family.lol If my kids, parents, sisters, grandkids, brothers and neices show up...its easily 20 people to feed. I don't mind doing it, I am going to miss it terribly.:(

braingonebad 02-01-2010 09:11 AM

I respect wht GM told you. But there's company, then there's family. I was just watching Paul Dean visiting with Jimmy and Mrs. Carter. Paula was showing Jimmy how to fix a few dishes, and they were talking like old friends, all of them, about food, and company, good times.

When everything was just about ready to eat, Paula asked where they eat. They said they pull up trays and eat in the family room, and Paula said that would be nice, and could they do that?

Mrs. C said, "Yes, but we should have paper napkins on the trays at least, since you're company!"
Paula said, "I don't want to be company, I want to be family." Paula told her to just go relax and she'd serve, if that was okay.

Poor Mrs. C. Looked a little flustered, but ever graceful, let Paula take over.

:o

I never point to people after dinner and tell them it's chore time. But I know if they feel like I do, it makes them at ease, they feel at home. That's my job as hostess to make them feel welcome. If they want to get their own drink, I show them where the glasses are and if they insist on washing while I dry, okey dokey.

I love food...I'm one of those who lives to eat...unfortunately, looking like it too does my knees, etc. no good, so I'm eating healthier...no cookies, no brownies, no malts (do you see a chocolate theme here?;)).
Instead, oatmeal, low-fat soups, chicken, veggies, veggies for snacking, and a couple of small pieces of dark chocolate (never thought it would pass my lips, but it's good, esp the high quality kind).
The weight is coming off oh so slowly...and I do have the higher fat variety food on occasion...esp when we're visiting someone out of town...got to go with the crowd.
Visited DD and her DH over the weekend...had waffles (my DH stared at me when I had a second...too bad), a bacon burger, and a bratwurst (they're Wisconsinites, ya know).
I didn't even bother to weigh in this morning...I know what it'll say. But it was worth every calorie...mmmmmm:D
