Sugar Ants

It must be Spring coming!! Just saw my first sugar ant. What can I do to get rid of them? (or at least discourage them.)

Kitty 03-03-2010 11:09 AM

Throw your sugar away?

Someone told me salt once. Spread it in a line where you see the ants.

I had a ton of ants last year around this time. I used a house pesticide that you could use indoor or outdoor. Thanks for reminding me to spray now before they come in.

Riverwild 03-03-2010 08:57 PM

I use a blowtorch. :D

SallyC 03-03-2010 10:53 PM

If you live on a slab home, they will come.... Spray around the outside ground perimeter of your house.

But I like River's method, too..:D

There is an ant killer called "Terro", which is available at Home Depot and other hardware stores.

It works great and will get rid of your ants within two days. You place a drop of it on some cardboard, place it where the ants are and they will eat the stuff and take it back to their hill for others to eat.

we try to avoid pesticides because of their adverse effect on neurological conditions, so I was delighted to find that a tip to sprinkle cinnamon seems to keep them away.
I buy large tubs of the Badia brand of ground cinnamon as less expensive than others, and I liberally sprinkle around the outside and also inside where I find ants. I also sprinkle the pantry etc

I also sprinkle some clove sticks as I was told that works as well

seems to keep all ants away and smells good too :)

River, you should be getting a call from PETA very soon.

Sugar ants -- we used to get them in the basement bathroom of our old house. Wonder if we'll have them in our new place.

Now where did DH put that blow torch?

kicker 03-05-2010 01:19 PM

Uh RW,
You know that's really not good advice. But Dej, thank you.

soxmom 03-05-2010 01:31 PM

The lady bugs are coming out of the wood work too(literally). You cant
spray for lady bugs here so my dd lets them all outside. Its a full time job.

I like the idea of cinnamon. I tried borax and sugar for the ants and found
it really didnt help.:(

DM 03-05-2010 04:55 PM

RW cracks me up!!!

Please don't tell me it's ant season again!

We had them last year, but my DH had a different name for them, which I can't print. ha

I like Chemar's cinnamon idea.

karousel 03-05-2010 11:13 PM

Went out for coffee this morning with a bunch of ladies today and didn't this discussion come up! One lady swears up and down that borax works. Each spring I pour bleach around the foundation of the house and it does seem to help some years.

I do the same thing. It does work and freaks them out. I haven't tried clove yet. Maybe this year if I see them.

There is also some stuff where the ants are attracted to it, they bring it back to their queen, she eats it and that's the end of the colony. However, it is really toxic and harmful to other animals and humans. My dad tried it and it worked but he doesn't have animals/little ones running around.
