Need Help Fast
I can not get my audio speaker to work on my computer and need to listen to the instructional CD for the recovery of my surgery. My eye surgery is Tuesday morning. I can not read the instructions in the pamplet as the print is too small. When I plugged the jack in the tower I heard a sound for a second before the speaker went dead. I had the power plugged into the power strip when I plugged the jack into the tower into a different hole. The 1st hole did not give me any sound. I wonder if I blew the speakers by doing that. I've shut down the computer and tried again. I know i have the right hole in the tower because I had sound for a second. I do not have it on mute. The light on the speaker is on but no sound at all is coming from speaker.

Headphones?
Typically, when speakers are "blown" they still produce audio, even if it's only white noise. If the speakers are powered, check all your connections including at the outlet and power strip. If the speakers are clip-wired, make sure the wires are in the proper clips, partial or backwards will not produce any sound. |
Thank you. I will check.

Thanks, it is working now. The sound sounds like it's in a tunnel though. What can be done to correct that?

double check the sound, audio settings in the control panel.. maybe a boost or something is set wrong.
|
Jo, I can not find where I can adjust the boost. I have Windows Vista Premium HP computer. Can someone tell me how I get there?

i found these -
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...sound-problems [ 1. Open Audio Devices and Sound Themes by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Sound. 2. Click the Playback tab, click Speakers, and then click Properties. 3. Click the Levels tab, and then, under Line In, click the Mute button Picture of the Mute button to enable sound for the line-in connection. ] http://support.microsoft.com/gp/no_s...ntrypoint=WHHT |
I know how to turn on and off the mute but that's not the problem. I have sound, I just can not understand it.

There should be some other settings to try,
look under options, advanced or properties?? I have XP so not sure what settings Vista has. I've plugged in speakers & headphones and it made a static pop or crackle noise but it didn't blow them. [In some cases, you can work around the problem by disabling optional speaker effects that are collectively known as enhancements. If disabling speaker effects solves the problem, you might need to update your audio driver.] |
Thanks Jo. I will try that.

make sure your speaker plug is plugged into the GREEN hole in the back of your computer. The color should closely match the color of the tip end of your speaker wire. MOST color code. If yours is black, dont worry, just look for the green square with the little speaker symbol on it. ONce plugged into that one, it should no longer sound like a tunnel.
If you look at your screen. ON the bottom right, you should see a tiny symbol at the very bottom right that looks like a speaker with ))) marks coming out of it. RIGHT click on that, and adjust the volume. I hope you get to see your DVD. |
It is plugged into the green and it still sounds like it's in a tunnel. The surgery was postponed for 2 weeks so I've got more time to figure it out.

Since you have a little more time, maybe I can help you with some troubleshooting. It sounds like the problem is probably one of 5 things: the CD you received, your speakers, the speaker settings, the sound card, or the sound card driver. When I’m troubleshooting, I typically start with testing the easiest and least costly first, then progress upward to the most time consuming and most costly. So, here are the steps I would take, in the order I would try them.
Step One - CD: Do you have a music CD, try that in the CD drive and see how it sounds over the speakers. Step Two: Have you tried using headphones? AfterMyNap recommended that, but I don’t see if you tried it or not. If you don’t have headphones, ignore this step for now. Step Three - Sound Card Driver: Here is a link that describes how to Update and/or Repair the Sound Card driver: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/166774Step Four - Speaker Settings: This link explains how to open the Sound & Speaker settings: http://freewindowsvistatutorials.com...ltSpeakers.phpThen, you can follow these 2 links to Configure and/or Customize the speaker settings. You might need to test several different settings to see if there is any noticeable change: http://freewindowsvistatutorials.com...reSpeakers.php http://freewindowsvistatutorials.com...erSettings.phpStep Five – Headphones: If you don’t own headphones, purchase an inexpensive set and try those. If they sound good, that might solve your immediate problem. Step Six – Speakers: If the Headphones did not sound ok, you can Skip this step. But, if the headphones did sound good, you probably need new speakers. Final: If nothing above worked, I would tend to think you have a problem with your sound card, and you might want to talk to Rent-A-Geek. I hope that helps. And, best of luck with your surgery. |
Thanks for the information. I will try all that later. The Sudafed the doctor put me on has me pretty out of it at the moment so I will work on it later. I've got to get my sinuses under control before they'll do the surgery cause it's causing me to cough a lot.
I never tried the headphones but will do that when I can find the ones I had or get new ones. It's good to have them anyway. thanks, barbara |
I've got the headpones and it still echos. how do I tell if I have service pack 2 for Vista? I can not tell if I've installed that or not.
barbara |
I know what version browswer but that's not what I need to know. I need to know how to tell what Service Pack I have installed. I'll do a google to see how to tell like I did with the browser. Thank you.
Barbara |
.
I'm confused. Why do you need to know if Service Pack 2 is installed? Here are the instructions from Microsoft Support: Quote:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791#ServicePack Have you tried another CD in the drive yet? What Steps from my prior post have you completed? . . |
I did step 1,2, and got stuck on step 3. I could have sworn the page the link took me to said I needed to be up to date on the service pack for the sound card driver. I will go there now.
Thanks, barbara |
Thank you so much. Installing the card driver made the speakers sound normal.
barbara |
I'm so glad it worked for you.
I just looked at the link for Step 3, and see what you mean about the Service Pack. I think I just glanced over it before, because it is only a general disclaimer. So sorry for the confusion. But, glad to hear you are up and running. Good luck with your surgery. |
Thanks and I love the kitties in your avatar.
