I want to get a WII

I see it all over youtube and they are all dancing to JINGO LO BA and I get hysterical. But it's been years since I hooked up any video game control thingees. I used to have playstation and nintendo but that was YEARS AGO.

So in my living room (where I put this WII thing,) I have a tv attached to my directv and my vcr.

My tv is a very nice older sony trinitron and in the front it has 3 things in the front. YELLOW, WHITE, RED. so I gather that the WII would plug into these three things??

So here is what I need to know (and I can't ask anyone because no one around here has one and the young people won't give you the time of day).

How is this WII hooked up. With the vcr and the cable box, where does the WII go? Do I just plug in the power thing into the socket, and then the WII has cables that go in the front of m tv? (the yello, white and red, I mean)??

Also, what WII do I get?

I don't need games to play, although maybe Alan might like bowling or stuff. What I mainly want is the exercise thing.

So exactly what do I ask for, and how is this hooked up.

I might be 62 but I'M YOUNG AT HEART!!!

lol
Melody
P.S. I'm saving up for this, so I'm not getting it tomorrow. lol

Hi Melody, the WII conects to the TV with red, white and yellow cables, you will need the WII fit for the fitness exercises, but I think it comes with games, tennis, bowling etc.
A lot of the senior centres over here have put the WII's in at there centres and the seniors have a lot of fun playing them and keep active at the same time.

Have fun if you get one

Okay, WII connects to the tv using the red white and yellow things, (which plug into the front of the tv, right?)

So what channel is the tv on when one plays WII? I have my tv on channel 3 when I watch the VCR (oh, in the living room, I think it's on Video 1).

So what do I select to be able to view this WII thing. Is my tv on Channel 3, or video one or what?

Another question. I know it comes with some balance mat or something like that, right? How many controllers come with a WII? and what does a controller do when one is, for example, playing the music thing where the thing on the screen is dancing to Jingo lo ba?

When I saw this on youtube, it looked like an Indian woman was dancing to it.

I haven't been up close to a WII dance fitness thing yet, so I've never personally seen what the actual screen looks like. I've usually seen the PEOPLE DANCING TO THE WII, not the WII itself.

So if I'm holding a controller, and dancing, what does the screen look like? and what does the controller do?

See, my niece has a WII, and I did the sword fight thing, and when I held the controller, and played sword fighter, my avatar on the screen was wielding a sword.

How exactly does the exercise thing connect with a controller? See how dumb I am? lol

thanks much

Melody

not sure about the channel thing, my TV has AV so the DVD is in AV1 my recorder is in AV2 etc. but is you have spare red, white and yellow on your TV it should work. I think one control comes with it but you can buy more, you need two controls for most games. We don't have the dance game but I have seen it being played on a morning show here in Australia, it think you just copy the moves and you get points, not sure?
The WII fit takes your BMI and sets an exercise programme for you. We have one but it is my Grandsons so I do not use it very offen. The WII has a sensor that pick up the signal from the controller. Not sure is I have been helpfull probably confussed you.

all the best

The Wii will plug right into the yellow/white/red thing on the front of your TV that you describe.

The wii comes with ONE controller (that uses batteries) and the game system, and sports package disc. The disc has boxing, tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and a few other things. its a great disc package and will teach you how to use your system.

The Wii balance board (fitness plus) is a MUST have! its $89 new. the disc (games) will be about $19 depending on where you shop. They may have used ones at a game store if you look. It comes with a balance board disc that lets you play hula hoop, and other tight rope walks and stuff that really helps you balance. It has many great activities on the disc, and will be a great start for you.

they have many great games, and easy games to play. You can also download them directly from the internet if you have a wireless signal in your house, or you can plug a LAN cord from your router to the machine. it will update the machine, and its software.

its an awesome investment! Try to start with the basics. I got an extra controller, and a nunchuck (that hand held thingie) and a charger for the units, so I wasnt using up batteries. I hear that the batteries can last a long time, but its easier for me to just plunk them back into the charger. I dont have a charger for the balance board. The batteries last and last on that.

resort island is also a wonderful game! tons of fun.

Well, I already have a balance board in my house, but I'm game. I never could learn how to use a hula hoop. So I gather one stands on this balance mat, (does it weigh you and tell you what you weigh?) because if it does that, FORGET IT!! lol I don't look what I weigh and I don't want to know what I weigh. And I don't want Alan to know what I weigh.

I look perfectly fine and normal, but I don't weigh perfectly fine and normal. Never have.

So let's get back to this balanced thing. How is it attached to the WII? And does it use batteries also?

And do I buy a regular WII or a Fitness WII? I'm a bit confused on that one.

I know now that if I buy a WII, I plug the power cord into the outlet, and take the red white and yellow things from WII and plug it into the front of my tv.

So what channel is the WII thing on? And is there anything else I have to know before I buy it.

When it stops raining in Brooklyn, I'm going to go to my nearest game store and act like a dummy (not so much acting), and ask the guy "please show me how to use this thing). They have a demo up on the floor. When I see all the kids playing on it, I don't want to walk in and say "Can you please explain it to me" BECAUSE KIDS TREAT YOU LIKE YOU SHOULD BE IN A COFFIN ALREADY.

I know, because this has already happened. Most kids have no patience for people over the age of 30, so god help me if I ask them for any kind of help.

I like to know stuff BEFORE I BUY IT.

That way, when I get it home, I KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

Thanks much.

The wii comes with instructions on how to set it up. Its really easy. just follow the booklet.

The balance board has 2 scales. one on each side of the unit. its wireless, and requires batteries to work. it weighs how much of your body weight goes to each side, front, back or center. there are many great exercises. You DONT have to know how much you weigh unless you want to. you can also password protect it so only you can see your results if you want.

have fun!

Does the balance thing come with the WII or is it sold separately. I keep hearing about the WII fitness or something like that.

And I can't imagine it not telling you what you weigh, if you set it up. It must flash on the screen or something to that effect.

I WON'T BE DOING THIS, I guarantee you

lol lol

P.S. I just went on the internet and found the instructions for setting it up. The first part is easy. It says Take the RCA things and plug into the colored things. I CAN DO THIS. No problem.

What confuses me is the next instruction.
If you use a cable or a vcr, use the inputs on these.

I have BOTH a cable box and a vcr. Do I HAVE TO hook up the WII via these things?. Can't I just keep things the way they are and simply plug the power part of the WII into my electical outlet, and take the red white and yellow things and plug them into the front of my tv?

Can't I just do this? Or does the fact that I use a cable box and vcr, well does this fact mandate that I set up through these things?

HOW DO I SAY "I LOVE YOU".

In French, Je T'aime

because I DO!!!! lol lol lol

I watched the video.

And the best part was......................

I UNDERSTOOD 99% OF IT.

Here's the one thing I don't get.

He said you have to give your WII console a NAME because you need the console to have a name when you go on the internet.

Why am I going on the internet with the WII??????

lol

For those that do online games, like the shoot em up & stuff.
I don't know what the online " in" games are, but I suppose there are lots of them.

Let me get this straight. The WII let's you go online? Is this correct?

Thanks, Melody

Dejibo 03-30-2010 09:42 AM

yes, the Wii has an ONLINE feature. You can surf the net, or check your email, or go wander around. They also have a private store that you can download games directly to your Wii. you can store them on the internal memory, or you can buy a separate memory card to store them on. SD cards are pretty cheap now. If you get a USB or wireless keyboard and mouse, you can surf kinda like your normal computer.

you are gonna love it!

Okay, so far so good.

How do I go online with this thing. I buy the WII, I buy a USB, or wireless keyboard (which I gather is connected in some way to the WII, right?)

Now I have a computer in my other room. No router, no laptop.

So how do I get online using the WII? does it have it's own router. Do I pay a monthly fee for going online with the WII.

I know NOTHING about this, as you can see.

Thanks so much.

Melody

Dejibo 03-30-2010 10:25 AM

if you have a wireless signal in your house, the Wii will see it. You DONT need to pay to go on their internet, BUT be careful in that some games cost money to download. They have free things, but they also have paid things.

its so much easier to just pull it out of the box, and get used to it. As you get used to it, you will understand what we are talking about.

Be patient, and wait for the machine to come. It will all become clear then. its exciting to get a new toy, yes?

Jomar 03-30-2010 10:51 AM

I think most of those game boxes:D {x box, PlayStation etc} now have like a mini computer inside of them with a hard drive and main board.

at least my son's XBox does.
He can go online, download games, play games, check email, movies, play movies on it & he has a extra hard drive for it too.

I tried it once but the way it is set up and the controller is not as easy as my computers LOL.

But to do that it would need a router, just like setting up another computer. except the TV is your screen.

Understood.
Thanks very much.
Since I don't have a router attached to my modem, I can't do the online WII thing anyway.

And since I didn't buy a WII thing YET, I'm not going to be playing any games.

I just like to know stuff BEFORE I GET THEM IN MY HOUSE.

To me, nothing is more annoying then buying something, taking it out of the box, looking at it and saying "how the heck do I use this thing"?

I'm NOT that kind of person.

I need to know stuff, to practice, BEFORE I buy ANYTHING.

So when it stops raining and blowing in Brooklyn, I shall take myself to my local electronic gadget store, and see how it's all done.

I now know LOTS MORE than before I posted this thread.

Thanks to you ALL.

Very very helpful.

lol

Right on!!

You will love the WII! Everyone at my house ages 3 to 72 love it, and they play all the games together. It is fun to watch the 4 year old knock out the gramma LOL!

My wife told me that her muscles were sore for days after we installed the wii because she couldnt keep from trying to out box the grandkids LOL!

For those that have a ps3 watch out for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It has a patch that the game designers will run when your gamer goes online. This patch cancels out the overheat protection that the ps3 has built in, so it never shuts down when it is over heating during when that particular game is played.

I have been fixing the ps3's that family and friends have been bringing me, but the fix only lasts a couple of months or so. So if any of your family has this game tell them it is a playstation killer.

It can be fixed, but it is very temporary, and you have to completely take the system apart, very technical fix. On the bright side you can fix it, then quickly trade it for a wii while it is working :winky:

If anyone wants to know what the fix is I can pass on the info so you can fix it yourself. The cost is zero, but taking the box down to the motherboard is a bit technical, but can be done if you take your time.

Dejibo 04-03-2010 07:36 AM

Game stop is advertizing that if you buy the Wii from them this month (april) they will throw in Wii Resort package for FREE! this is an awesome game! its a $49 value and a great package deal. I dont know if other stores are matching the promotion or not.

I was kinda ticked actually. I was in game stop and asking about another game, and the guy kept answering the phone, and with each new phone client he would brag about the wii promotion. I finally said "DUDE! im right here with money! hang up the phone, or put them on hold!" he took 2 more phone calls, and I walked out. I know he is a kid, but it ticked me off that I CAME TO THE STORE! and others are only calling. I think cash in hand beats a phone call anyday, yes? so, he lost out, I went to Wal mart and got my game.

MelodyL 04-08-2010 07:28 PM

SOMETHING VERY FUNNY HAPPENED TODAY. I HAD MY FIRST WII LESSON.

I went for a walk to the local gaming store in my vicinity and there on a pedestal was this WII.

You're gonna laugh your heads off when I tell this story.

So I walk in, I see the WII and looked to the right and there were two teenagers playing a Playstation thing.

I look at the WII thing and notice there is no tv so I'm saying to myself "How do I view this thing, is it connected???". I must have mumbled this out loud, when the two teens came over and said "Oh, you like the WII?" and I said "yeah, but it's not connected".

They go, "sure it is". and I go "where's the tv?" and they laughed and pressed some thingee on the controller and all of a sudden SOMETHING came to life in front of me and there was this WII INFORMATION ON SOME SCREEN

I said "Oh, that's a monitor, not a TV?" They must have thought I lost my mind.

They left, and there I was looking at this screen and holding a controller in my right hand and some other thing with a button in my left hand, and I looked like a stupid idiot, (I DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE).

Well, it seems that there was this family in the back of the store, and the 5 year old little boy wandered away and came over to me.

I looked down at him, I handed him the controller and the other thingee and said "Here, show me how to use this".

He grabbed the controller thingees and went to town. All of a sudden on the screen was all this writing telling me about how the world had a nuclear explosion and it was the year 2020.

I look at the kid and he can't read and I start reading him the story (don't ask me why I did this but I did this).

A sales guy comes over and says to the both of us "Oh you have a WII at home?" I look at him and say "This kid's not with me, I asked him to teach me the WII?" The guy burst out laughing and walked away.

So I'm standing there watching this kid playing some game and I said "Where is the dancing?"? He doesn't know what I 'm talking about but he's pressing buttons on the controller and he's playing some war game.

So his family comes to collect him, and I'm left standing with two controller thingees AND I STILL HAVE NO CLUE.

The people behind the counter must have thought I was a complete fool.

I walk over to some young guy who worked there and I blurted out "I want to do the Jingo La dance thing," and he said "Ah!!! you want the Wi Fitness", with the Balance Board". I said "Don't give me no balance board, I don't want my weight splashed all over the screen." Whereupon everyone got hysterical and I started asking my questions.

The WII unit is $199.99 and it comes with one controller and no balance board. The Just Dance game (which features the dances that I like), is on sale for $29.99. I got the information, walked back over to the WII and picked up the controller. Don't forget I HAVE NO CLUE how to use this thing.

I notice there are two buttons that say 1 and 2. I call over to the guy, "what's with the No. 1 and No. 2" and do you believe he answers me with:

"They are Buttons".

I look at him and say out loud "YA THINK???" I know what buttons are, what do they do?" He says "Well, it depends on the game?" then I ask him "What's the A do on the controller?" and the guy goes "it depends on the game".

I'm really doing good so far don't ya think? Still don't have a clue. So I walk back and say "do you have a demo of the Just Dance game". and they said "no, we only have the games that are in that WII".

So I now know that a WII console costs $199, and I don't have to buy the balance board. It comes with one controller, and the Just Dance game costs $29.99 and if I buy a console, it connects to the front of my tv with the red white and yellow thingees.

But I have no clue how to use the controller.

AND I'M NOT GOING BACK THERE AGAIN. I felt like a complete idiot.

But not to worry. SOME DAY!!!!

lol
