Keep on Moving Club: April 2010

Since BBS1951's computer is on the fritz, I am posting this thread for her...but she is still "the leader of the club that's made for you and me"!

MS sometimes makes it hard to keep moving, exercising, stretching, so we do less and less. Before long, its not just MS that interferes with our mobility and health, its also atrophy of muscle causing more balance problems and more muscle weakness.

So, we started a Club to support and encourage us to keep moving --You use it or you lose it! So, what do you do-- do you stretch, do you walk, shovel snow, swim, aquacise, isometrics, lift free weights, Wii,calisthenics? Please join the club.

I am riding my bike in training for an MS150 ride in April. I try to do 45-60 minute spin classes at least twice a week and have been riding 60-100 miles per week on my bike lately. I feel like the exercise and fitness that I have built up from riding probably helps me overcome minor MS symptoms like fatigue or muscular weakness without really seeing them for what they are. I know that if there comes a time when my MS progresses, the strength and fitness I am building now will help me to adapt to the challenges I will face.

So how about it...what do you do to ""Keep Moving"?

ewizabeth 04-01-2010 10:28 AM

I'll take a walk on my break today, thanks for subbing for BBS. :)

SallyC 04-01-2010 01:29 PM

I haven.t done any slip sliding across the new floor recently, but my dog has..a lot.:D:p

I have been doing a bit more standing exercises, though and am gaining more strength.

Debbie D 04-01-2010 03:19 PM

Worked in the garden for about 2 hours both yesterday and today; cutting down the grasses from last year, cleaning the algae and sludge from the koi pond, raking up leaves. I work until I get overheated or my legs stiffen up too much to make it impossible to do any more. It's great to be able to work outside again:D

Dejibo 04-01-2010 05:02 PM

I did a round of IVSM today. im not going far. Its going to be a pretty week here too.

ewizabeth 04-01-2010 09:50 PM

I drove to a nearby park and walked for 20 minutes on the nature trail. It was 83 degrees here, a record high for April 1st!

Tomorrow I'm going to throw my shorts in my work bag so I can walk further next time. :) I get too hot in my business apparel.

pud's friend 04-02-2010 05:48 AM

Gaining greater strength and stamina by the day. A little swim here and there, lots of walking and two horses to be working on daily. I'm moving !!!

Dejibo 04-02-2010 09:06 AM

3 hours of a tummy ache and being up and down, and up and down out of bed is exercise enough for me...thanks.

off to do day 2 of IVSM. wish me luck. :(

ewizabeth 04-02-2010 07:47 PM

I walked 20 minutes on my lunch again today, another beautiful day here. :)

TXBatman 04-02-2010 10:00 PM

Spin class this afternoon. Fun class, full class too. Did about 45 minutes with a max HR of 89% and an average of 72%. 621 calories burned. Heading to bed now so I can get up at 5am and ride 52 miles in the hills near Huntsville, Texas. Two weeks to go...everybody pray for a tailwind two weeks from now!

Dejibo 04-03-2010 07:17 AM

incredibly sunny day. Woke feeling much better. I may take a walk after IVSM if I am not too weak.

karousel 04-03-2010 10:42 AM

Now that the nice weather is here my DD is my personal trainer and keeps me moving. We have been going on long bike rides every day and even drag my DH out with us. Then on my own I've been walking my street which has tons of big hills to help tone me.

So today it was a 45 minute bike ride on Hojack trail (old railroad path) which was a big muddy so we got off it and rode around a nearby track.

pud's friend 04-04-2010 07:19 AM

Skipped my swim today because the clocks went back and by the time I was done ffaffing about, it was getting dark.

Worked the horse this morning and we had a marvelous training session. He's starting to listen to me which always helps.
Worked the pony this evening and got there eventually... :D

sabimax 04-04-2010 08:38 AM

Well I start physical therapy tomorrow after work, so I will get some moving thru that but have been laying low in pain lately... still walk a bit.. but between work and rest, work and rest.... but soon hoping to get more yoga and walks in to my days! Happy Easter

karousel 04-04-2010 06:29 PM

Went for a super quick power walk tonight, then walked again with my DD (much slower this time!). I hope to do this every night after dinner unless we go and do some other activity.

TXBatman 04-05-2010 09:45 AM

Did a 53 mile ride in the hills north of Houston on Saturday. Took 3 hours and 10 minutes with an average speed of 16.5 mph. Burned 3100 calories and the post-ride smoothie was SOOOO good! It got up to 87F that afternoon, which is a little warmer than I prefer to ride in, and I definitely felt the difference towards the end of the ride.

How many chocolate eggs has that burnt off ?

karousel 04-05-2010 08:08 PM

I hope no one minds that I am posting what I am doing every day. It helps me be accountable and keeps me moving. Today I did a 3.5 mile walk in about an hour on my street which has tons of hills. I'm sure I'll pay for it tomorrow but what a feeling! I haven't been able to do that in over a year.

Debbie D 04-06-2010 04:58 PM

Worked out on a stationary bike for 35 min.; then 30 min. of weight machines. I haven't worked out in over a week so it felt really great!!:D

ewizabeth 04-06-2010 06:13 PM

Yesterday I did ten minutes on the elliptical and took a brisk 15 minute walk on my lunch (stopped to shop too, lol.)

Today I did 20 minutes of Pilates. Tomorrow morning I hope to make time to do more before work since I work noon to closing.

TXBatman 04-07-2010 10:19 AM

Pud's Friend,

I didn't burn off any chocolate eggs, but I swear I could smell some jelly beans going up in flames...

Did spin class Monday night...1 hour and 5 minutes, max 88% of max HR, avg 78% of max HR. 842 calories burned. Which I subsequently added back on by touring the Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham on Tuesday...with free samples...

sabimax 04-07-2010 10:52 AM

keep it up all, you are moving and grooving along!! yeahhhhhhh

that is what is nice about the moving club... just posting what you been moving and doing, helps keep accountable for getting the moving we all could use in life!!

Today cleaning house some, may get a walk in later... did PT Monday and I go tomorrow... if no rain I will walk today hugsss, sarah

karousel 04-07-2010 09:06 PM

Spent four hours shopping and trying on clothes. I know it's not really exercise but it wiped me out!

Dejibo 04-08-2010 08:48 AM

I walked around the house yesterday. Took a small car ride to the MD office to flush my IV line, and then...took a nap!

karousel 04-08-2010 09:29 AM

Did 20 minutes on the treadmill and will be spending the day cleaning the house.

BBS1951 04-09-2010 03:21 PM

Thanks to txbatman for keeping the Club together! IT's wonderful to see that the Club has become an independent entity, and doesn't need prodding to keep on moving along :)

I still swim a mile every day. Its amazing how much more time I have now that I have a bad computer I did not realize how much time on line sucked in!

Dejibo, I'm sorry to see you are still flaring. BOo hoo.....

Everyone else, keep on moving and keep posting here. It inspires others who are in the contemplating stage of getting more active.

TXBatman 04-09-2010 03:41 PM

Welcome back BBS! Glad to hear you are still paddling away!

Tomorrow is the last big training ride for the MS150 a week from tomorrow. We are doing a 51 mile ride in the hills...and Oh Mama what hills they are! The route we are doing will make us climb Rek Hill, Industry Hill, Lone Oak Hill, and No Name Hill...the four biggest hills in our area! Sure they are nothing compared to the hills in Colorado or North Carolina...or anywhere else for that matter...but for us flat landers, they are a big deal!

I broke out the BatDanna for our Because We Can meeting last night and got another 8-10 people with MS to sign it. I am now riding for nearly 30 people who have put their name/message/mark on my bandanna (I am really riding for all of us, but having y'all sign the bandanna makes it feel so much more personal!). I will probably take it easy next week to rest up for the ride...maybe do an easy spin on Tuesday night.

Right now it looks like good weather for this weekend, but the initial models for next weekend are showing a 60% chance of rain both days. I hope the weather man is wrong, but as long as it isn't flashing lightning, I can handle a little rain on the way to Austin...at least we will have a tailwind and cooler weather!

TXBatman 04-10-2010 08:12 PM

Thats it...training for the MS150 is DONE! Rode 48.17 miles today at 15.8 mph avg speed. Burned 2800 calories according to my heart rate monitor. Since January 1, I have ridden 578 miles in training and spent about 30 hours in spin class. I will probably do one spin class this week just to keep my legs loose, but won't go very hard.

Next Saturday, we head out for 100 miles from Houston to LaGrange followed by around 70-75 miles from LaGrange to Austin on Sunday. I have done all I can do and just have to see what the weahter is like. The rain chance are coming down and the tailwind is staying in the forecast, so it could be a really pleasant ride! Not sure how I am going to wait out the next 6 days...I am excited and want to get on the road and go!

sabimax 04-11-2010 07:34 AM

WOW Tx!! that is amazing all the miles... and the ride you are about to do! thanks that is awesome you can do it! woohooooo good luck

I took a walk yesterday, not long one but fast paced my legs did not like it but I did!

today I am going golfing with hubby yeahhhhhhh hoping I never have to give the golf up due to my body!! :D I know I may be hurting from going but rather hurt from golfing then from my job right!! hehe

Other than working full time, I started Physical Therapy last week, doing two times a week... a workout in a pool then she deep tissue massage on my tight spots on my back... I am feeling a work out from it in my lower legs... not sure helping any of the stiffness/spasm stuff or pain... but any workout PT or otherwise I will take!!

hugss all, sarah

karousel 04-11-2010 06:20 PM

Did an hour of gardening and biked 2.5 miles in 15 minutes on hilly roads with my family. What a great day to be outside!

sabimax 04-11-2010 07:29 PM

golfed 9 holes, with a cart but walked a good bit of the hilly course... plus golfed really good

and took a jog/walk with the dog... hugss, sarah

ewizabeth 04-11-2010 08:10 PM

I went for a 20 minute walk yesterday. Looking forward to the increasingly longer days so I can get outside a bit more. Walks during lunch will be difficult though because I can't go back and do sales after sweating. :p

You and Phil Michelson, huh? :D

karousel 04-12-2010 06:59 PM

Went for a 45 minute walk with my neighbor so I got socialization along with exercise! What a deal.

Debbie D 04-12-2010 08:06 PM

I went to the fitness center today, despite being fatigued. I got on a stationary bike and lasted all of 10 minutes before I had to get off due to severe leg spasms.
I walked over to the weight machines and did my 30 minute circuit. Couldn't do full sets for some of them, but I got it all in anyway.
Then, in the late afternoon I mowed the lawn. Felt good, love the smell of freshly mowed grass!! It took about 45 minutes, and my hair was wet from the workout!!:)

Debbie D 04-13-2010 04:40 PM

I swam 36 lengths in 32 minutes today(about 1/2 mile)...I haven't been in the pool to swim for exercise in months...it felt so great!!

sabimax 04-13-2010 04:44 PM

lol Kitty, I was rooting though against Phil as I like KJ and was hoping really to see Fred Couples win it!!

hurting still from golf and walking a walk with the dog that day, between that and then working on feet I guess over did that day with both golf and a walk! but doing ok... hugss, sarah

ewizabeth 04-13-2010 09:04 PM

I did 15 minutes of upper body boxing moves yesterday and went for a ten minute walk on lunch while at work. Nothing much today but I will tomorrow.

Debbie D 04-14-2010 02:54 PM

Well, I filled a 5 gal. bucket with pond water and carried it about 15 ft before dumping it...about 25 times. Since I was sweaty and had an overheating incident, I count it as "moving"...;)
