Why didn't you tell me not to remodel the kitchen?
What a mess!! DH has taken the soffets down, and he got a few surprises...
The bathroom vent bends down into the soffet area, and was detached, so there's dust and spiderweb thingies...then they ran the drain from the upstairs bathroom sink, which is in the middle of the house, out to the outside wall and down, you guessed it, into the soffet area. The conduit for the electric outlets also have to be moved... it is going to take a lot of work to get this right. And the cabinets come tomorrow:eek: We still have to have the wood floors sanded and refinished, and also have boards placed where the cabinets were. Ugh...I want to just float away and come back when it's all shiny and new. Advice: NEVER let your spouse do the remodeling work... |
My hubby's a remodeler, so can feel your pain. Luckily, we haven't had to do that yet here. But I know what a mess doing things like that can leave behind - or uncover.
Hoping that the finished product is well worth it for you. :) |
I feel your pain. I didn't tell you because in the end it will be worth it I promise.

It was all Sally's fault with her talk of hunky guys and how much fun remodeling is. LOL

I had a pool guy come to fix my filter. Told him I really wanted a Pool guy, you know what I mean? The middle-aged man smiled sadly and said he was the best looking pool guy they had.

Hey Debbie!! Don't let DH remodel your kitchen!
Oops.......I'm a little late with that advice, huh? :o |
If the pipes, BR drain and electric are in the way, just buy some Wal Mart big flower pots (light weight) with lots of greens in them already.
After the cabinets are in, paint the wall and pipes the same color and put up the nice baskets or copper pots with fake ferns and ivy in them. Even big copper plates to hide the pipes and stuff. I did this in my son's house one time he had the same problem. You can even put up a decorative edge across the top to match the cabinets and to hold the plants. Or put lights up there, muted, away from the pipes. Or close it back up and put a new Sheetrock soffet to cover back again. ;) When my DH does something, I always sit and watch, to be prepared to do a "Mac Guiver" on his work. Never fails. |
Isn't that what always happens? You start a project only to have to do multiple projects just to finish that one?? We had problems when DH and my FIL remodeled our kitchen in our old house. It was a nightmare with the problems we had and how long it took. Now my DH is eyeing this kitchen and I said NO WAY!! He wants to take out the soffets...sound familiar?

I don't ever want my husband to do any DIY projects again. He thinks a permit is never needed, do it to make it look OK from the outside. Who cares that it isn't structurally sound. No, closets don't need doors, that drywall mud looks sanded enough. I have heard it all. And if you get a contractor you go for the lowest bid no matter what the quality or referneces are. I have a deck we can not use that cost over $1000, fake gutter guard that is worth zip, terrible paint job on the porch and soffits, botched up family room that took twice as much as the guys estimate to have a reputable company come in and fix his work. Then we didn't have it in the budget to decorate like I wanted. But when he wants a 60 inch TV! Only the best. Our kitchen is 32 years old and has the original cabinets and sub floor, avocodo stove and counter tops!

It is frustrating to be hitched to a guy that actually can do a good job...he goes around the neighborhood fixing peoples' garage door springs (very dangerous), helps them put up cabinets, fix their disposal, toilets, etc.
But when he replaces the wood trim around the floor, for instance, he always has to leave one board unnailed, so that it comes away from the wall when I clean. Or he'll leave his supplies on our bedroom floor...:rolleyes: I am so worried he's not going to do the electricity right, or he'll install the cabinets so they're not level... The cabinets arrived today...we are so not ready for them!! |
Oh my gosh Debbie, he must be a distant relative of my DH. He's a do it yourselfer too but he's finally decided not to do the risky stuff like getting up on the roof with a ladder.
Good luck with the rest of the work, I hope your DH doesn't overdo it and is very careful with the electrical part of it. |
