Keep On Moving Club - May 2010

Since BBS1951's computer is on the fritz, I am posting this thread for her (a few days late...), but she is still "the leader of the club that's made for you and me"!

MS sometimes makes it hard to keep moving, exercising, stretching, so we do less and less. Before long, its not just MS that interferes with our mobility and health, its also atrophy of muscle causing more balance problems and more muscle weakness.

So, we started a Club to support and encourage us to keep moving --You use it or you lose it! So, what do you do-- do you stretch, do you walk, shovel snow, swim, aquacise, isometrics, lift free weights, Wii,calisthenics? Please join the club.

I ride my bike and do spinning classes. I try to do 45-60 minute spin classes at least twice a week and do a weekend ride of 40-50 miles every 2-3 weeks during the MS150 "off-season". I feel like the exercise and fitness that I have built up from riding probably helps me overcome minor MS symptoms like fatigue or muscular weakness without really seeing them for what they are. I know that if there comes a time when my MS progresses, the strength and fitness I am building now will help me to adapt to the challenges I will face.

So how about it...what do you do to ""Keep Moving"?

Debbie D 05-04-2010 03:11 PM

Decided to get the umbrellas and planters out of the shed today. Then I planted flowers in hanging baskets and containers for over 2 hours. It was a workout...I have the sweaty shirt to prove it!!

Dejibo 05-04-2010 03:53 PM

I walked a 1/2 mile today. I ate breakfast, and it just sat on my tummy. I figured the walk would help move things along.

BBS1951 05-05-2010 05:20 PM

TxBatman; Thank you soooo much for getting this thread moving. I'm doing a quick check in here.

Dejibo: Its nice to see you walking again, after that rotten thread.

I am still swimming a mile a day. Now, its beenwarm enough in Florida to swim in my backyard pool and I love the convenience and the privacy :)

What is everyone up to?

karousel 05-05-2010 06:16 PM

Today I worked in my garden -- for over 3 hours!! I am tired but feel great that I got the job done I needed to do. Tomorrow I'll rest.

Dejibo 05-05-2010 06:45 PM

did errands today, including the dread grocery store. it was crowded, and noisy, and overwhelming! Where did all those people come from? I consider that my work out for the day. :o

pud's friend 05-06-2010 05:12 AM

Been swimming on and off, 20 minutes a time. Water a lovely 95degrees.
Felt real good this morning so went off to re fence a paddock, an afternoon nap and a swim this evening.
No doubt I have now done too much and will suffer for it :( which I'm dreading 'cos I'm working tomorrow too :(

Debbie D 05-06-2010 12:09 PM

Went to the fitness center to swim, but the kid's pool where I normally swim was starting a kiddie class, and all of the adult pool's lanes were taken.
So I went shopping and then took my dog for a walk. It was beautiful outside, a real mood-lifter!!:D

I've been working out here and there. Yesterday I did my lower body Pilates and today I had a 20 minute walk on my lunch. I've been doing some boxing moves for my arms to keep them in shape. Between work and Spanish classes I'm keeping extremely busy.

Vonn07 05-10-2010 10:20 PM

hi .. I'm HERE ... and working a bit here and there ... and by this time next month - I hope to be moved!!!

still working the arms and bannister push-ups ... :D

ewizabeth 05-10-2010 11:21 PM

Today I did 40 minutes of Pilates and some boxing moves for the arms. Day before yesterday I walked for about 20 minutes on my work break. :)

I'm here. Feeling like crap, but planning on doing a little walking tomorrow because I've got some seriously swollen feet from the nasty steroids bugging me. (I'll take any suggestions on what to do with swollen feet)

Tonight, I'm sleeping with my feet up (above my heart) on a wedge pillow in the hopes that I can actually do some basic walking in the driveway tomorrow without wanting to cut my feet off.

I was feeling really bad tonight, and then took a shower and suddenly I feel like the steroids actually started to help some of the symptoms. I'm tired and still numb and my back still hurts in the numbest area, but suddenly the worst symptom I've got going on right now is swollen toes/ankles/feet. (oh, and my left hand is swollen, but I pretty much knitted an entire scarf tonight, so that might explain the swollen left hand)

Maybe things will un-numb themselves in a few weeks and I'll feel like going to the gym and hopefully swimming! (or at least walking in the water)

Moving a lot better since the UTI left the yard. Standing and bending at the waist (a few times w/o holding on:p)

Keep up the good work, you guys. :grouphug:

Did spin class last night (Race Day). It was tough and very warm in the room to start, but I made it through ok. 1 Hour and 6 minutes with an avg HR of 72% of max and a max of 92% of max. HR monitor says 833 calories burned.

Going to go out this evening and take a recovery ride in the park. Will probably do around 20-25 miles, but don't plan to go very hard...it is hot out there!

Dejibo 05-12-2010 11:39 AM

Feeling bloated, and nasty today. while only keeping 1/2 of what I eat, I decided that walking may help. I did a half mile before I quit. :o

Debbie D 05-12-2010 12:14 PM

Worked out on an elliptical machine for 25 minutes, then 30 min. of weight machines. Felt good!!:)

TXBatman 05-13-2010 12:45 PM

Took the bike out for a spin after work last night. Rode 28.1 miles in 1 hour and 39 minutes (16.9 mph avg). It was pretty warm (around 85-87F), VERY humid, and the wind was blowing 15-20, so it was fun going downwind for the first 14 miles, but the trip back was a bear.

Is that mostly on trails TX? Or do you ride on the highway? We have some nice bike trails nearby but I'd have to ride a half mile on a busy two lane highway to get to them.

TXBatman 05-13-2010 04:05 PM

I am lucky enough to have a bike path that goes right near my office. It is about 1/2 mile on a street with a bike lane on it, then the rest is on paved bike paths. The path section is about a 13 mile route one way that I do as an out and back.

I use that route for my weekday shorter rides, but we drive out west of Houston to do our longer training rides on weekends where we can get mileage from 25-70+ miles if we want. Most of those routes are either on quiet country 2 lane roads or bigger roads with wide shoulders to ride on.

Debbie D 05-13-2010 05:00 PM

Good job, TX...
I worked out on an elliptical machine again, this time for 32 minutes...felt good, but I stiffened up later with pain. It was worth it:)

ewizabeth 05-13-2010 06:31 PM

I also did 30 minutes on the elliptical today Debbie! :) I feel better now and it always makes my mood better the following day.

Debbie D 05-13-2010 06:39 PM

I totally agree!! I wonder why, when I have the blues, I can't get myself off the couch and get over to work out...I have to make myself do it...it always makes me feel so much better!!:)

Dejibo 05-14-2010 07:16 AM

I walked my full mile today. I really didnt want to. I had to force myself, but now that its done, I am proud of me!

karousel 05-14-2010 06:02 PM

Took a nice walk today with my hubby. :circlelove: My favorite way to walk!

Erin524 05-14-2010 09:33 PM

Felt human enough today to go visit my regular doctor for a follow-up...scored myself 9 visits with the PT people that are in the same building. (yay!) and then I went yarn shopping with my sister and then came home and took off with my dad's car (I'm not up to using the stick shift in my car yet) and went and got myself some Chinese food and rented a movie. (Sherlock Holmes)

Tomorrow, I think I'm going to actually use my gym membership and try to get out of the house. Even if I dont do much more than pedal on a recumbent bike for 10 minutes (I dont think I'm up to even the slowest speed of the treadmill), I'm going to just get out of the house and away from everyone for at least an hour.

Talked to my regular doctor today and told him that I thought this flare was stress induced. (mom's broken shoulder, and having waaaay too many people in the house making noise and not letting me sleep and just driving me nuts) and he told me to take advantage of the gym membership and go treadmill or swim or something just to get away from everyone. He said that the swimming would be good for me and it would get me away from everyone and I dont have to worry about tripping and falling in the pool (just have to worry about tripping while walking into the pool from the locker room)

I probably wont try swimming for a few more weeks. I'm still feeling shaky from the flare. I'm thinking some gentle peddling on a stationary bike is about my speed for now...and maybe walking out in the front of the house.

I made myself get up early this morning (11am). Didnt get much sleep...went to bed around 430am, but I think if I can try to get to bed before 2am tonight, then maybe I can get my brain back to a more normal sleeping schedule and might actually have the energy to exercise.

I was surprised to find out that I actually LOST weight over this flare! (the way I've been chowing down on everything in a steroid fueled frenzy, I never expected that)

Doctor still thinks that if I lost more weight, then maybe I might have an easier time of things. So, I guess I have to make a better attempt.

Dejibo 05-15-2010 06:20 AM

I walked my full mile this morn. I am in the slow lane, but I made it.

Debbie D 05-15-2010 02:06 PM

Mowed the lawn today...it took a bit longer because my legs were spasming. But I finished all by myself!!:)

Dejibo 05-16-2010 07:19 AM

only did 1/2 mile today. I am quite tired today. its gonna be a slow day. :)

ewizabeth 05-18-2010 09:57 PM

I've been doing a little bit each day, either garden work, a short walk or air boxing. Today was a 30 minute walk through the park on the trails by work. I saw various birds, a chipmunk and a rabbit on the path. :) I had a 13 hour day today so I'm really worn out and hope to sleep well tonight after this.

Erin524 05-19-2010 05:45 AM

I finally felt good enough yesterday that I went to the gym yesterday afternoon with my dad.

Didnt do much, but I did pedal the recumbent bike for about 15 minutes.

Noticed that my legs turned to jello right after that. The numbness in my back and stomach wasnt as bad yesterday as it had been earlier this week or last week. (last week there was still an invisible python strangling me around the ribs and stomach)

The numbness yesterday seemed to get woken up by the walk down to my aunt's mailbox on the other end of our neighborhood to pick up her mail. Then it came back a bit during the exercise. But, it seemed to go away once I got back home and hid out in the freezing cold basement for a few hours.

If I can get some sleep today (havent been to sleep yet, and it's almost 6am) I'll be getting my exercise when I go to PT with my mom. (she's still doing that for her broken shoulder) I got a Rx for some PT last week...so I'm hoping that the weakness in my legs is from not doing a whole heck of a lot for the past month and not some weird MS thing.

Going to bed now...hopefully I'll sleep for a bit
