what is the best type of bed for PN sufferers?
Hi Everyone
I am going to buy a new bed and like most PN sufferers I overheat a lot, especially my legs and feet. I would like to buy a Memory Foam bed as they seem very comfy but I have heard they are very warm - although the salesman said the bed I looked at had a mattress with only 50% foam so should be fine. I would appreciate any feedback on this topic. Best Wishes Arlene |
I've also heard that they are warm.
Another thing I found with just a memory foam topper was that I had a heck of a time turning over. I turn many times at night. So I got rid of it. Also, the topper was warm - too warm for me. Just my experience. I know some people like them. |
Yes, they are very hot for some...temperature wise.
Also you cannot get in and out of it easily...unless you wear silk and have silk sheets. I have a memory foam topper only, and it has been good for me with my pain issues which are also arthritic. But even with only 2in of foam, it can be a challenge to roll over! It is also hot to sleep on, so A/C is really needed. In cold winter however, it is nice. |
I agree with MrsD. I had a thick foam topper on my bed and I hate it. You do get hot easily and very difficult to turn over. I tossed and turn a lot and it was bad news for me. It was also difficult getting out of bed. That is just the experience with it.

:Zzzz::I have a memory foam bed and find it very comfortable, they do take time to get used to but I really like mine.:Zzzz:

I have a 4" thick memory foam on my bed, and I have loved it since the day I got it. I was having so many issues with my hips, not being able to get comfy, and the foam works for me. I haven't noticed it being too hot, but then I have always liked my bed warm. I do not suffer much neuropathy pain though, which I know I am very lucky.

I've heard that the foam mattresses are supposed to stop the tossing & turning.
You supposedly (according to the literature & the little 'sample' they send you) are so comfy that you stay in one peaceful position all nite, to get a good nite's rest. |
I have a pillowtop mattress with a memory foam topper on top of that. It works as well as anything....and nothing works perfectly. It may be warm...or else it is just me.
|
LOL... yeah, they sure will stop tossing and turning! You can't MOVE at all!
When the time comes to get OUT of the bed...you can't just schooch over and slide out. I wish the commercials would show that! You could get a board and slide out on that I suppose. :Ponder:  Remember Billye? She broke her pelvis in several places! I think anyone with severe osteoporosis should not consider a full deep Temperpedic bed, and stick to the toppers. We bought the toppers when I hurt my leg several years ago. I have one on my bed (we have twins up north), and hubby couldn't stand HIS. Too hot for him. But I do use the topper still and it does help my sore left hip area. |
Here is Billye's thread about getting OUT of the Tempurpedic:

I have bought a few beds since this condition. The foam bed I did not like when I tried it. Did you lay on different types in the store? Some things I feel to take into account is height of matress and box spring. I had one that climbing in and out of was hard. Also some pillow tops seems extra lumpy to me. I would go less with the sales person says and more how your body feels which I know can be hard. I lay like a board on my back so some depends on how one sleep what matress is the best. Hope you find one that makes you feel as good as you can with this.

Yes, I too could not get out of bed easily at one time...it is better now, perhaps it is the ivig, I don't know, but, like Billye, I was stuck in the darn bed, even the topper! Now I am able to extricate myself in the morning.
|
I have no trouble moving in my bed or getting up...guess I am very lucky huh? I love this topper, can't imagine a bed without it now! My mattress is only 4 yrs old, and I was having a terrible time with this body on it until the topper.

There are different types, & manufacturers of toppers?
Who makes them? What are the differences? |
Select Comfort
I bought a Select Comfort (Numbers) bed probably 15 years ago, way before I was ever diagnosed with PPN and Fibromyalgia. I do like the bed because I can vary the firmness. I like it softer on the bad days and a little more firm on the better days. I did try adding a memory foam topper but it was just too hot for me. I have found that you just have to have the right bed to get a good night's sleep. I feel like I can at least get through the morning if I have had a restful night. :Zzzz: Wishing a "good" day to all. (PS....I bought my bed through their outlet store which saved me alot of $$$.)

The subject of additional heat with foam toppers, continues to crop up in this thread..
I generate a lot of heat. Usually I sleep semi-nude with A/C on full - & a 18" box fan on the floor, pointed up towards the end of the bed - in summer & all covers off. Even in the winter covers are usually off. If covers are on, my legs & feet are hanging out, & off the edge of the bed for air circulation. Many times I need a menthol cream to cool them down, to get to sleep. Additional heat doesn't sound so good to me. |

I've been seeking a good mattress for ever!
And with a queen bed platform style [meaning no box-spring], getting just the mattress can be a challenge. You can sink a lot of $$ into a wrong choice. Not to mention IF you have to have the box spring with it? It's like four feet off the floor?
I have tried the foam 'pedic' type mattresses, and the one disconcerting 'thing' I felt when trying it out was: I KEPT SINKING DEEPER! I felt dizzy from the overall sensation and got almost panicky and nauseous after 45 seconds. Bob is right about the 'foam' heat. As for the 'number beds'? There are city area hotels [if you are near a big city] that offer these beds in some rooms. My feeling is it'd be cheaper to try it for a nite or two at a hotel than sink the $$ into it for the long term. A thought to consider. Maybe also an excuse for a nite out? Some companys do have 10, 30 or 90 day trials, but don't forget that YOU have to pay the shipping both ways. Even Consumer Reports Magazine doesn't recommend any one bed over another. It's as subjective as 'medical opinions' and we all know what they are about [or not]!:hug::hug:'s - j |
A few months ago, I went for a visit for 3 nites in a motel
that offered the 'sleep number' beds. I got a room with 2 full size number beds. I tried soft, medium, & firm over the 3 nites. Woke with backaches for all 3 settings. Didn't like it at all. My wife didn't care for hers either. I bought a new bed about 4-5 yrs ago. A Sealy Posturpedic with a pillow-type top. Seems to be the best bet, yet. |
Update on my bed situation
Just to let you know I went ahead and bought the half and half memory foam mattress, my 14 year old daughter was my insurance policy, she has a comfy bed and is always cold so I figured we could swap if I hated my new bed, BUT SHE IS NOT GETTING NEAR IT, I love it so much I cant wait to get back into it :p It is not too warm and believe me I am always warm, I can turn in it but do feel that I dont turn as much as it is so comfortable - bliss.
Just need to get this pain sorted and life will be wonderful. |
I never get too hot either, of course I am cold all the time. Mine is a 4" thick topper, I got it at Walmart for around $120, queen size. I love it. I was looking at them in Kohl's, also looking at around $189 there, and this one from Walmart is nicer than any I saw in Kohl's.:D

I bought a pillow top bed, hate it. Put a 2" memory foam on that, it's better. I don't have central a/c it's hot in my room, I don't think the foam is any more than room temp. In the winter it feels coolish when I get in but warms up nicely. I don't have trouble turning or getting in or out.
I think I'll get a foam bed next. I also use a body pillow, that helps a lot too. |
Your mattress question has obviouisly gotten some differences of opinion, so will throw in my two cents:
The best mattress I've ever had is solid foam but not Tempurpedic (did not like it when trying it out in the store) with matching boxspring. Do not "overheat" from it and find it completely comfortable. No problem changing position or getting out of bed. Happing shopping!:) Sheltiemom |
I have an update:
We put a second foam topper on my twin sized bed this summer. It is easier than getting new mattresses out there to the island, and we don't obviously have a way to get rid of the old! At first it was nice. It WAS difficult rolling over however and by the 3rd week, my back started killing me. I spazed up on my right side severely and so we took the 2nd one off, and within 3 days my back returned to normal. We just put it on one of the guest beds. (Hubby doesn't like it either). It has been difficult for me in bed since I damaged that tendon in my left leg. When that injury was fresh I couldn't roll over at all! As time passed, and PT showed me moves to make that less painful so rolling over is easier. It is amazing how we take some movements for granted! And how the adductor tendon hooks up to the trunk and pelvis to move the legs etc. |
