appt with med.Marijuana doc

i need your advise. i live in nj where med. mj were approved recently and made an appt with mj doc. my main consern is spasticity. i take zanaflex and valium before i go to the bed. i think i need indica. but im not sure.
what kind of mj do i need to ask him. i prefer donuts instead of cigaretts. do i need to talk to the doc about it?

Dejibo 07-20-2010 10:56 AM

We dont have such laws in my state, and I have never asked for it, but I would imagine that you would need to have an honest conversation with the MD that you would prefer not to smoke, and would prefer food based products.

I think (not sure) what happens is you get your prescription and then have to go to a special shop that sells the stuff. They will help you pick out products that you would like to try.

please come back and let us know how it went, and what happened.

I am wondering if your doctor would know or would the strength of the MJ need to be left to the discretion of the MJ pharmacy.

Smoking has an immediate effect but despite having smoked for many years (I have not had a cigarette in over 10 years), it HURT my lungs big time for three days.:( I only had one toke from a bong. Only one hit was too much. I do not like the "high."

A friend made me brownies. It took about an hour for the effect and since I did not know how much, I ate too much and that was VERY unpleasant.

I got a reaction I did not expect, I became stiff as a board. It did not make me loose and it did effect my spasticity, I was so busy thinking I needed to call 911 that I forgot my unpleasant tightness.

One final self medication was a small brownie "bite." I took it while in bed, read for a while and went to sleep without the usual cramping seizures in my legs. So I found my correct dosing. I feel better in the AM too.

Now I keep a frozen batch of brownies in the freezer. I use them when I get into bed and know it is going to be a rough night.

They taste pretty awful.

The doctor really only documents that you have been counseled on the use of MMJ for your condition, and cautions of side effect on driving, etc. of MMJ. I just asked my gastroenterologist (I first used it for Crohn's) and he signed my form. After that he does no prescribing or further work with MMJ.

There are numerous resouces online for medical marijuana information; this one seems to cover a lot of questions new users may have: http://www.medicalmarijuanablog.com/

Just google "medical marijuana" to find more websites, articles and information.

Indica is more of a body high, good for spasms and relaxation, but can make you sleepier, gives more sedation. Sativa gives more of a cerebral high, good for pain and distraction from symptoms, and is preferred if you don't want to feel sleepy. It is possible to train yourself to perform normal tasks without much trouble while high, but watch driving and other activities that might require extreme alertness. And if weight it an issue for you at all, beware of increased appetite, and keep healthy munchies on hand. Actually, keeping busy helps with that.

Remember, THC is a drug, and acts on the body like a drug. It works for some and not for others, and each person experiences it a bit differently. Be cautious using it with other sedatives, like valium, as the combined effects could be magnified.

I use a bubbler-bong for immediate dosing, and baked cookies for a stronger body high and for travel. I have made my own canna-butter, but it is a smelly and messy task. My first batch of medicated gingerbread cookies were perfect, in that three tiny cookies kept pain at bay for hours, up to 4-6 hours. Ingested marijuana can take 60-90 minutes before you feel it, so be aware before you eat too much and get way too high!

The doc will not prescribe donuts for you, nor will every dispensary sell ready-to-eat medicated goodies. Expect a trial and error period, during which inhalation may have to be your mainstay until you have dosing figured out.

Dej is right . . . the dispensary (I belong to a co-op) will be your best resource for information on what strain will serve your needs best, etc. Don't be afraid to ask and ask and ask questions . . . we are all in the learning process all the time!

Your doctor should not and will not have product to dispense for you. This is not how the laws work. All the doctor does is provide documentation that you have a covered condition that would benefit from using medical marijuana.

The doc cannot prescribe this and will not, it's against DEA regulations. They write a letter recommending it, that you have a disease that meets the criteria for your state, and off you go. The rest is up to you and the laws of the state you live in.

Here in Maine we can grow our own, get it from wherever we can or go to a dispensary. They are just now setting up the dispensaries and there is a lot of yapping about where they can be located, who can run them, who can work at them, etc. Cities and towns are setting moratoriums on development as to where they can be located, etc. It's been since November of last year and they just named three organizations so far who can run a dispensary. they are allowing eight dispensaries statewide, one for each county or combining one or two counties for the less populated areas.

The state requires the law to be in effect within 90 days and so far they still haven't got it all set, but we can purchase and grow legally now, so it's a start. They are still talking IDs and registries and all that. It's going to take a lot longer than anyone expected to get it fully up and running but at least they are working on it! (they have no choice, the people voted and the law is in effect!)

mj doc

i just made an appt with the only one mj doc in nj - our govt doesn't rush to create any dispensaries, so i think i need to wait. i know everyone is laughing at donuts (brownies is better - right)? i just can't imagine how i can smoke in front of my children. My oldest is ok - she tried it and didn't like (brownies were her idea , but 10 yo must be out of it.

mj

forgot to say, they put my on waiting list

dmplaura 07-25-2010 12:12 PM

Imho, a good pain doctor will first try non-smoking methods of drug administration.

I had the social stigma idea of being on medical marijuana, but now I take pills and it seems to do well overall for my pain.

SandyC 07-25-2010 02:00 PM

Indica is best for reducing spasms from what we have seen. However, keep in mind that what works for one, may not work for another. Also, when eating, start slow and low, wait an hour and then see what happens. Many make the mistake and eat too much and end up asleep and not really knowing if they got relief or not. :)

Hubby chooses to digest and smoke for now. The combo seems to work best. BUT AS SOMEONE STATED BEFORE, YOU DID NOT HEAR THS FROM ME UNTIL IT'S LEGAL HERE. I CAN BE ANYBODY, NOT REALLY WHO IT SHOWS I AM.

EddieF 07-28-2010 07:41 PM

lol. What a great thread. I just had ice cream, rediwhip & syrup but no brownie! Donuts??? Seriously people like 1 person said - have healthy snacks on hand cause everything will taste sooo good :)

Perhaps you can ask your doc for 2.5mg Marinol and see how that works then ask dispensery what equals that. They're $6.50/each so just buy a couple for test. They're synthetic thc and no idea what type of marijuana they resemble. They make me drink tons of water which my kidneys & bladder love me for when I take one. I take soo many pills and it's the only way to clear urine. 5mg does it for me. Reduces spasms by say 50%. Still take 120mg baclofen/day.

EddieF 07-30-2010 07:37 PM

All jokes aside, the reason why I'll chose this the day it becomes legal in my state is because I'm so tired of Oxy Roxy news stories of people killing each other or strung out like junkies over those pills. How in the world Heroin got acceptance over Marijuana is far beyond my imagination. I orginally got the Marinol (synth thc) pills for lower back pain. So much less addictive then Oxy. The part that really burns me is the 1 time I filled a 5mg Oxy script just to try them, it was maybe $35 for 60? 60 5mg Marinol is $768. I hope our leaders realize this, wake up and smell the Marijuana. Told my Dr one of the side effects is laughter. I'm in no hurry for pool days to be over but November sure will be interesting more ways then one.

dmplaura 07-30-2010 09:28 PM

EddieF, it's more like a 'body' sensation (the synthetic form, I take Nabilone which is similar to Marinol, apparently in cost as well sadly) than a mental altering.

After now having been on it for several months, I don't get a 'high' from it at all now, but it does help a lot to control my pain.

Dry mouth's the only down side to it that I can tell. I also take Clonazepam for my cruddy burning mouth syndrome that yes, still plagues me :(... and I still feel the 'kick' of taking each dose of that drug (hrm!).

I also feel the cruddy w/d if I miss Clonazepam, but if I miss Cesamet (Nabilone), no w/d! Go figure, huh?

(Clarity: Clonazepam = Klonopin in the USA)
