Positive MS Quotes To Hate.

I have MS but MS doesn't have me.

Next......

ewizabeth 07-22-2010 09:07 PM

... but you look so good!! :D

SallyC 07-22-2010 09:07 PM

But you look so good.

Come on there's a million of em.

legzzalot 07-22-2010 09:10 PM

Well, you don't look sick. . .

Wish I could figure out a way to not work, have a home and take care of my kid (says the ex when complaining about me not working, like it effects him).

Smack him upside of the head for me.:p

Lynn 07-22-2010 09:30 PM

'What doesn't kill us makes us strong'....(tell that to my recalicitrant leg muscles)

or

'How long are you going to use that as an excuse?' followed by...'you know I am only joking'... (I obviously have a different sense of humour)

Judy2 07-23-2010 02:48 AM

Grrrrrrrr......I really hate that first one!!!!! MS DOES have me and is slowly squeezing the life out of me, just like a python!!! :(

How about.....my friend has had MS for years and hasn't progressed so much.

OR

This "wonder drug" (snake oil) will have you out of that chair in no time!

Don't ya just feel like screaming, "Put a sock in it?"

jprinz99 07-23-2010 06:48 AM

what about these?

At least you don't have to work.

Wish I could sit in a chair (w/c) all day

Wish I could park in handicapped parking

Wish I could lay arund in bed/chair/couch all day and relax

Like this is all some sort of friggin vacation...Makes me want to slap some people - and often?!?!

marion06095 07-23-2010 07:23 AM

“My uncle had that. He didn’t die for a long time.”

kicker 07-23-2010 07:38 AM

EEEWWW,
The spa-land of MS. Sit in a chair all day (ARE THOSE PRESSURE SORES FORMING DOWN THERE?), great parking (like I have the energy to go shopping and besides I can't drive anymore) yet the laundry needs doing and the kids need stuff. Sigh.

kicker 07-23-2010 07:50 AM

I like the "Inspirational" videos people send me. The guy born with no arms and legs who is so positive (is the camera around when he cries?), talks to kids in school (Uh, he can make money in that way, Do you have any other suggestions?), the one-legged ballerina and her one-armed partner (Like I could dance before MS), MSers who climb mountains (Is there a W/C access trail up to top for me?).
OK, I'm done being bitter. There's laundry to do.

No wonder he's an ex.

Lynn 07-23-2010 08:10 AM

How 'bout this one....

When parking in a disabled parking space and walking into a shopping centre, I got this one:

'Laziness is not a disability you know..." from a complete stranger 'you should be ahamed taking that space from someone who DOES need it'.

I must have been having one of those 'you look so well' minutes. Pity the cow didn't see me staggering back an hour later.

And the other old rejoinder to the 'you look so well' comment is - 'and you look so intelligent....go figure'

I like that!

Blessings2You 07-23-2010 10:50 AM

"I sure wish I could retire."

("Do you wish you had MS also?")

Kitty 07-23-2010 11:04 AM

"You're so lucky to be able to get paid for doing nothing".

Are they serious?? I worked my patootey off since I was 16. I paid into the SS system. I also paid for Long Term disability insurance.....just in case. Unfortunately, my "just in case" became a reality.

I'd love to be able to hold a job now. But yeah......I'm so lucky to be able to lounge around the house and do nothing...... One positive - I can't be fired or laid off!

SallyC 07-23-2010 11:25 AM

For all the peeps who have said any of the above to us.....SmAcK sMaCk SMacK smAck!!!!

Keep em coming...grrrrrr..

tkrik 07-23-2010 11:34 AM

Most of the time, I just blow the comments off as ignorance and just make the comment that, "Everyone ends up with something in their lifetime that becomes chronic. You just haven't gotten yours yet." Or, I just leave it at, "Everyone ends up with something. Mine is just MS."

BUT . . .This comment blew my mind. I couldn't even respond. I was speechless. This elderly lady tells me, "But your so beautiful.":eek: WHAT? DBF was with me, saw the confusion and shock on my face, and explained my bad days to her. Phew!

Kitty 07-23-2010 11:43 AM

Tricia, I've found that elderly folks are the worst. I don't know if they just don't think before speaking or feel like they've earned the right to say whatever they feel. They can be brutally honest (almost like children are) and say things that really hurt. My Dad was like that - of course, I didn't know I had MS but he could say some things!

Isn't that the truth. LOL But it rendered me speechless. I get all sorts of comments. The most common is "But you're not in a wheelchair." Over time I have learned to curtail or change the subject. Once I say . . ."You haven't gotten yours yet" people tend to turn around and start talking about all their aches, pains, medications, and other medical issues to justify they have something too. Which is fine by me as I would rather listen to that then talk about me and MS. ;)

Omg this goes so far beyond "but you look good" which could be ignored as just one of those stupid things people say when they are uncomfortable and don't know what to say. Yeah I'd have a four letter word for anyone with the nerve to say any of the above to me.

What about "are you one of Jerry's kids?" :D

P.S I loved "but you look so intelligent" LOL

Dejibo 07-23-2010 01:28 PM

At least you are not in a wheel chair...yet.

Debbie D 07-23-2010 01:56 PM

Either I'm blessed not to have people like that around me, or I just exude health, but I don't get icky comments. In fact, one day I was bending over, hanging onto the grocery cart and trying to stretch the spasms out of my lower legs. A woman came up to me and asked me if I was all right. I told her yep, just leg cramps...she asked if she could help me...isn't that nice?

I do hate all of the "religious" posts on a certain MS facebook page...don't they think I'm praying all day? I'm a spiritual person, but I am not sure how all of those posts are going to help me when I am cursing from the pain:rolleyes:

Dejibo 07-23-2010 06:59 PM

YOu know if you just took all the gluten out of your diet, all your sx would go away!

legzzalot 07-23-2010 09:34 PM

oh wait, we forgot the all important one from my mom's psycic. I don't have MS my dead grandmother says to eat sweet potatoes, asparagus and eggplant and it will clear right up!

Yes, I was at a party when I was bombarded with best friend's family; You should try bee sting therapy, fish oil, light candles... oh, and back to the religion thing... I have so many people praying for me it's ridiculous.

ewizabeth 07-23-2010 09:41 PM

Yeah, my best friend asked me that, before I educated her. :D

Dejibo 07-24-2010 06:31 AM

You know, most of these Drs dont know what the ?? they are talking about. I bet you dont have it anyway, I mean...look at you! you look great! Have you had a 2nd opinion?

volada 07-24-2010 07:02 AM

plenty of negatives but here's one of nicest things someone said

"i hope you are feeling as good as you look."

made my day.

kicker 07-24-2010 08:08 AM

Jeez, we're Montel's kids!!

My religious SIL said to my friend SIL "I've organized a prayer group, we're going to pray for Kicker. What's wrong with her?" (I was in the first shock of DX, not telling details to most. She was just being a nosy b&%$#@).
"God knows" My friend SIL said.

Kitty 07-24-2010 10:50 AM

What cracks me up are the folks who think it's some kind of competition. Who's got the worst condition or symptoms. They ask how you are only as a lead-in for them to inform you of how bad their arthritis, bad hip, skin condition, asthma, gout, etc. is ........

I'm not trying to "outdo" anyone for this prize! I've gotten to where I just say "I'm fine" and won't go into any specifics when others ask how I'm doing. It's a lose-lose situation with some folks.

Debbie D 07-24-2010 11:19 AM

Oh no kidding, Kel...I am learning that I need to button my lip when someone asks me how I'm feeling...those who really want to know will look me in the eye when I say "fine" and say, "No, really...how are you doing?"
The others are just being polite, or are begging for you to ask how they are doing...my FIL is the best at this...:( I've learned not to ask him how he's doing, cause he'll replay the same old same old...I don't like going to his pitty party anymore...:(

Somebody actually left a note on my car windscreen that said that!!

It was a printed paper, under my wipers, and said " Laziness is not a Disability".
I daresay they didn't see me get out with my rollator, and if they did.... probably thought it was fancy dress day!

My sister (the dreaded sister) said to me that I only say that I have MS to get attention. This is the same sister who kept saying she wished she could be on a disability pension like me .... and has faked it so she now has one too!

You should have answered:
"...And stupidity is not against the law, so you're free to go someplace else.."
Unbelieveable how some people know everything, or think they do.

Dejibo 07-25-2010 09:36 AM

yes, but if you just gave yourself a good pep talk, and motivated yourself I bet you could get up and do more. Before you know it, you could be back at work! wouldnt that feel great?! (this came from my mother) ACK!

Kitty 07-25-2010 10:36 AM

"You just need to get out more. Doing things will make you feel better."

Sort of like my DDH telling me while I had the flu that maybe if I did some laundry it'd make me feel better.

I love that one. As I also have Crohn's, I have had every diet in the book recommended. I am constantly "losing" foods when I determine they are causing inflammation, but everyone seems to know what I should and can eat! Nutritionists just scratch their heads when I list all the foods I can no longer tolerate . . .

Don't you love those who say "you'll get better" or "hope they can fix it?" Like there is a surgery or pill or length of time you have to endure and then one day you will wake up and feel all better . . .

MSCherokee 07-25-2010 08:53 PM

Oh, these stupid comments really P me off!

My favorite was when I was out of town on a business trip and we had to do quite a bit of walking. It was a hot day and you would've thought that my two supervisors (who know I have MS) were trying to speed walk to see who could make it the fastest. When I finally dared to say that I couldn't keep up, could they please slow down, I was told that I was just out of shape and needed to walk more.

When I got over my shock and was done running through all the expletives I wanted to say in my head, I replied that no, I'm not out of shape, you know I have MS and am heat intolerant!

legzzalot 07-26-2010 02:19 PM

Here is one for ya. After a complete mental meltdown today (because I am in severe pain and the heat is not helping and the pain meds make me phychotic) I was in a "my life has no purpose and I feel useless" mood. DH2B tells me I need something for me, something that I enjoy doing... then he tells me we can afford for me to go back to school. I realize he was trying to be helpful, but I am not working because I cannot make it through the day between the pain and the fatigue and the general craziness. I have giant holes in my brain that do not allow me to remember something to told me an hour ago. So even if I somehow make it through school and pass these classes, what the heck is the point if I know I will not be able to use this degree we just paid for??

Ugh, some days people just don't quite get it. I know he was trying to be helpful, and I appreciate his offer. But it just made me even more crazy because I know that I cannot concentrate long enough to take one or two classes.

KajunButterfly 07-26-2010 09:00 PM
