Going gray.
I'm 54, thinking of stopping dying hair red (a great natural looking Red my Stylist has developed over the last 10 years). With good color by a pro comes great cost. Plus getting to her is tougher. I don't go out much either. Is it time?

Oh, I can't. Freshman (college) Parent's Day (2!)is this fall, Kids don't need a bi-colored old mom in a chair. After Christmas there's lots of time.

I too have been considering laying down my dying gloves. I just dont know if I will have the courage. I have a friend who went au' naturale and ...its looks bad on her! she put on 10 years! it looks so good on some and yucky on others. Maybe as hers completely washes out and turns its natural shade it will be better.
big decision. |
Oh my goodness! I cannot wait to get more gray hair. I have 1 really odd streak coming from the crown towards the back of my head. I so want more gray. I am just starting to get a few by my temples and am thrilled.
I do use permanent dyes in my hair. I just starting using Natural Instincts as it is less damaging/harsh and lasts just as long as permanent. Wella makes a good demi hairdye that is great. Since I moved there is not a Sally's around me. :( Once I get more gray hair, I'm stopping. Kicker - Could you stylist just put "highlights" in just to break up the gray a bit and not do all of the hair? I think that would look really pretty. I saw a lady that had both the red hair and the gray and it looked nice. Of course, it was all natural and she had a beautiful streak of gray . . .actually white hair. She parts her hair right where the streak starts and it frames her face. It's just beautiful. Just something to think of. |
I've seen people who look "worse" as they gray, but more who (in my opinion) look way better. I have a couple of friends who actually inspire jealousy, they look so good gray.
I always wondered if I would want to color my hair if I grayed prematurely, but that ship sailed a LONG time ago. I'm 60 (AAAACK said it out loud) and still mostly blonde. There's plenty of gray mixed in, but if you saw me you'd say "There's a blonde". (Well, no, you'd probably say "There's a fat lady") I can't imagine myself going to that much effort...I think if I look really ghastly when it all goes gray, I'll take up wearing a chapeau. |

I have a great hair dresser. Occasionally, she would dye my hair - maybe once or twice a year - and only charge me for a haircut. Anyhow, I would always ask her if there was white highlighting she could do to blend that one streak. She'd laugh and say I was the only customer she had that wanted gray highlights. LOL |
I've never had the courage to try changing my hair color. I was too afraid of a disastrous result.
Gray happens. When I can't stand my hair, I have a couple of wigs to choose from. One matches the natural color of my hair (near-black with gray mixed in), and the other has no gray. The wigs have been around for quite a while now. I don't wear them very often--maybe once a year. |
I've been going gray since I was 17. (my dad's hair went prematurely gray. He was graying by the time he was 22) I'm 41 now.
My hair isnt as bad as my dad's is. He was white headed by the time he was 45. The most gray I have is in my bangs. If I didnt color it, I'd have a splotch of white in the front of my bangs with a sprinkling of gray on the rest of my hair. The guy who's been cutting my hair since I was 10yrs old colors my hair for me. Expensive, but I dont have to worry about making a mess at home, and I dont have to worry about accidentally turning my hair purple. I think when I hit 50, I may stop coloring my hair. I only color my hair about 3 or 4 times a year. I'm bad about getting in to get my hair re-colored before the gray starts showing again. |
My Avatar is last years and this is my, this years, all grown out white. Everybody likes it and it sure is easier to take care...

Sal, you look beautiful au naturale!!
My SIL let her hair go gray, and it did age her...I have streaks under my highlights, and my DH complains (with a wink) about the expense, but I'm much too vain to stop!! |
I grew out my auburn hair back to gray during a year in which I had four surgeries and almost never left the house. Sometimes I miss my red hair, but get way too many compliments on my natural hair color to consider going back.
And I got my first gray hairs while a sophomore in HS! Craig C. used to sit behind me in algebra, and find and pluck them as they came in! |
When the colour of my hair changed from brown to grey...I told people I earned every single one of them...Then my colour changed from grey to white more slowly I then said "' I'm blonde ash blonde heavy on the ash! ":lookaround:

I let my hair go gray just last year. The sides were a startling white. I am probably 70% gray now.
But it did not last long. I was at the airport with DH and twice, bag handlers thought I was with my SON. He still has his natural color. I am going natural when he finally gets more gray hairs. DH colors my hair for me. Years ago I was going to pay a hairdresser and when he saw the cost, he wanted to dye it. He has gotten good at it.:) |
Well.....I've messed around with my hair since college, back in the dark ages, and I'm not changing now. It's about the only thing I still have that makes me feel good about myself.:) My hairdresser is wonderful and after going to her off and on for 15 years, she now comes to my house once a week for a shampoo and every six weeks or so, for a color and trim. I'm unable to hold my arms up long enough to do much of anything myself now. My ex had premature grey hair and is now white....so my three adult kids all have some greys. Mine stay hidden!! :)
Just an interesting note -- my hairdresser loves to garden in her spare time, so she also takes care of my flower garden, plants annuals and even brings her hubby along to powerwash and stain my small deck off the bedroom!! Two jobs done for the price of one.......well, two. She's in her 40's and has lupus. We've become good friends in the bargain. |
I've colored my hair for years. I've just started using Nice and Easy because it's got a blend of three similar colors that gives the highlight effect. I love it! I use a color a couple of shades lighter than my natural color (what IS my natural color now!!). The shade I use is light natural blond. It lasts for about eight weeks before darker roots begin to really show. The highlighting effect helps to mask darker roots and gray. I know I have gray at the temples. My Mom hardly had any gray when she passed away and she was 84.
P.S. Sally......you're hot!!!! |

I last put a colour in my hair back in January, just prior to our son's wedding. I've been wishing my hair would go grey for years now... ever since those first few appeared. I actually like grey hair ... I just don't like this pepper and salt look I have now, while I wait for the rest of my hair to catch up! My hubby went completely grey soon after we married. He blames his grey on me, seeing he didn't have any before we got married! Darn cheek!! :D |
