When life explodes

Sorry I haven't been around much, life is smacking me down in multiple ways lately.

The mold saga in the new place continues and it's too huge to describe here. One example would be that after being told that I'd need to stay away for about 4 hours by 8:00am on Thursday, at 7:55am Thursday, the mold guy arrived and informed me that I had to vacate for at least 24 hours.

I allowed that allotted time to pass and returned to discover the remains of the kitchen in a heap at the front door with a note that reads, "Do not enter for any raeson" [SIC]

In the meantime, my hard drive crapped out taking with it the contents of my entire life. Fortunately, it was replaced for free by way of a responsible company that knew about the possibility and took responsibility for it. Now I have the decision to make of whether my lost data is worthy of an expensive retrieval. Oy!

So, my mood is in the proverbial toilet but I'm doing my best to stay calm and thankful knowing that it could just be so much worse. My lawyer will be amused to know that the hotel bill just went up a whole bunch.

Earl 08-14-2010 07:53 AM

I find it very surprising that you don't do a regular back up. Didn't you teach me that lesson?

I would suggest going to the local apple store and getting a Time Capsule right away... and maybe a new macbook. :)

freeinhou 08-14-2010 08:43 AM

Wow. Sounds like life isn't you very fairly right now.

Tom

Blessings2You 08-14-2010 10:39 AM

Not the "happily ever after" story I was hoping to hear. :(

I'll put you on my prayer list. Oh wait. You're already there.

Jomar 08-14-2010 11:00 AM

Uggghh the mold problem sounds horrible.

Did the h drive totally stop working -physically ?
or is the system/data on it messed up?

If it is the system/software there are recovery programs that are pretty easy to use.

But maybe you know about those already.

but your post is a good reminder to me to do a back up - :grouphug:

barb02 08-14-2010 11:02 AM

Sorry you are going through such a rough time. Mold:eek:! Hope your hotel has free internet service.

SallyC 08-14-2010 11:05 AM

Wow, it sucks to be you right now, huh?

Will you be able to live there, in peace and quiet, anytime soon?

:smileypray: ((((Cindy)))) :smileypray:

Dejibo 08-14-2010 11:12 AM

MOLD! that is one of the scariest things I know of. I hope you get your life and house back soon.

I hope they make it right for you, Cindy. Mold is nothing to play around with. That stuff can come to life! Make triple sure they have taken care of the problem before you set one foot back in that apartment. I'm glad you have a lawyer. ;)

Twinkletoes 08-14-2010 02:30 PM

Sorry, Cin. :( Just when things ought to be fun and exciting after a move. Pfffft.

I'm glad you didn't stick around in your new digs long enough to get some funky mold-induced complication, though.

Keep yer chin up, woman. Its GOT to get better!!!

Erin524 08-14-2010 04:21 PM

We have a mold problem too. Parents shower was remodeled 5yrs ago and they did it totally wrong. Had people here this week to go over plans for my bathroom shower remodel and they were looking at my parents shower and said that it wasnt to code. (no waterproofing, and the marlite tile slab that is the walls is only being held up by my mom's grab bars. The mold is growing up thru the grout on the tile floor and up the walls) So we need to remodel my parents shower at the same time they do mine.

From your story, it sounds like I'll probably have to pack up my parents and go to a hotel for demolition day while they're ripping out my parents shower and cleaning up the mold. I'm not exactly looking forward to that. Well, I am a bit. I love watching remodels being done. I just want to stay here to watch it be done.

Hopefully you got rid of all the nasty little moldy bits that you had. Hope your computer gets better too.

ewizabeth 08-14-2010 08:37 PM

Aw, AMN.   I wish I lived close to you. You could stay with us and we could gang up on the people responsible. Darn them anyway. I hope it will all be fixed and you'll be settled soon.

And I'm so sorry about your hard drive. :( I still have your trip pics somewhere I think? From when you went on the road trip out west. Let me know if I can send you copies.

I think I'll back up my stuff now too. :o

Jules A 08-14-2010 08:43 PM

Hang in there.

karousel 08-14-2010 10:12 PM

Mold - not good at all. Then your hard drive crapping out is just one more thing on top of it all. hang in there

NurseNancy 08-15-2010 05:32 PM

hugs cindy,

i'm sending good thoughts your way.

Aarcyn 08-15-2010 06:58 PM

Hey Cindy. Your house decided to go green in the worst way?:D Hope it gets resolved soon.

Erin524 08-15-2010 09:52 PM

With mold it's more like her house is going black than going green.

Mold is yucky! It's also a pain in the butt to get rid of if it's really taken hold. Hopefully she'll get it all gone and wont have to worry about it again.

Hopefully her computer is an easier fix.

Kitty 08-16-2010 04:16 AM

How are things going, Cin?

Do we need to form a posse and come over there?

LOL, yes, I'm sure that a swarm of gimps on a rampage will threaten them into swift action! :ROTFLMAO: :ROTFLMAO: :ROTFLMAO: :ROTFLMAO:

I'm still at the hotel and will go down there to see what's up in a couple of hours. This is like a serial nightmare and the bad guys are still at large.

I know I'd be skeered if I saw a group of gimps descending upon me. Those canes and scooters can leave nasty shin indentions!

SandyC 08-16-2010 10:01 AM

Whoa, so you don't know when your able to get back in? Did they at least let you get some clothes? It's raining mold on your parade and that angers me. But I bet it is great for your lawyer! For every mishap, he gains more ammo.

Sorry about the computer. :(

Rrae 08-16-2010 12:37 PM

We could be driving a bulldozer with a load of TNT in the back.:D:p

ewizabeth 08-16-2010 03:07 PM

Do you want me to call them and pretend I work for the EPA? Or I could be a reporter with the New York Times? Let me know.

AfterMyNap 08-16-2010 04:08 PM

*handing Sal the keys* That's a great idea!

Later that same day...

I'm back at the hotel after making the 42.5-mile round trip yet again. It turns out that they underestimated (a laughable understatement!) the seriousness of the problem and had to use mega-turbo doses of chemicals rendering it unsafe until today. Thus, no progress over Friday & the weekend.

So, Gomer Pyle tells me they need at least another day and here I am.

Sandy, it's inaccessible to me, they have their gear, tools and stuff strewn everywhere, so I wasn't able to go in.

I got an inordinately and uncharacteristically contrite email from the regional manager who has been such a pain in the ask. I figured she'd been reamed pretty neatly, she CCd her boss who I emailed on Friday.

Wow, if these people are an example of the general mental prowess of the locals, I'm gettin' outta here ASAP.

I'm going to take a nap and hope I wake up back in my own life!

Kitty 08-16-2010 05:43 PM

Gomer's there??!! :D Well, gaaaaaaaaa-lee!

Sorry.....I couldn't resist.....

Why don't you come on down a little further south to Georgia? There's some mighty nice places to live in North Georgia. Blairsville is right on the GA/NC line. I'm probably 80 or so miles south of it.

Erin524 08-16-2010 08:09 PM

How much did they underestimate the problem? Did they find a brand new species of mold found only in your house? Did they have to bring in botanists (or moldists?) to categorize and classify the genus of the mold?

Is the mold fighting back with pitchforks and torches or something? Are the repair people about to resort to a scorched earth solution?

I'm hoping our mold problem is only in my parents shower and that it hasnt decided to branch out yet.

I think it had more to do with quantity/density than with aliens or international conspiracy.

Erin524 08-17-2010 12:24 PM

I hope they got it all out for you!

NurseNancy 08-18-2010 12:08 PM

cin,

thanks for the update. i'm fervently praying that this whole mess gets fixed and you get handsomely repaid for all the expense and trouble. then, get the hey out of that place.

FL anyone?

AfterMyNap 08-18-2010 06:41 PM

Thanks, dear Judy, I'm afraid it's actually getting worse! I'll try to be brief, I've checked out and back into the hotel twice since Monday and now I'm at the apartment because I was so completely upset and frustrated by the after-construction "cleaning" those same idiots did, I went ballistic and was simply too exhausted to safely make the drive.

As if this isn't already totally unfreakingbelievable, I went to make tomorrow's coffee only to discover that the sink is leaking all over THE BRAND NEW CABINET. This is where the whole &^%#@#%^&* thing started all those years ago!

It is one month to the day since this nightmare began and I'm sincerely hoping that I don't wake up tomorrow or ever. I've honestly had enough of this life.

Where's my whiskey...

Blessings2You 08-18-2010 06:45 PM

Doesn't all that carp total a lease-breaker? Where is 60 Minutes when you need them...

Erin524 08-18-2010 07:28 PM

*passes over the good 12yr old Scotch*

Are you renting, or do you own the house?

If you're renting, can you get out of the lease if the place isnt habitable?

ewizabeth 08-18-2010 07:29 PM

I hope you'll sue the management and all involved. I'm so ticked off for you.

Kitty 08-18-2010 07:54 PM

Sorry for all the headaches, Cin. I cannot imagine the stress this is causing for you. I really hope things improve soon. I'd be on my last nerve.

Give us your address and we'll find River and DM and bring Liquorama to Mayberry!

Count me in on this one. I could use a drink. Or two. Or, you could just move over to the next state, VIRGINIA. We probably have about the same weather.:D

Cindy, I'm with woodhaven, come to Virginia! However, we've had rain for the past four days which sure doesn't help mold problems!

I'm so very sorry you are going through so much.:hug::hug:

AfterMyNap 08-19-2010 10:18 AM

Woody, Maryann, trust me, I'm on several waiting lists in several states including VA. Accessible apartments in decent locations are so hard to come by, it's not even funny.

As the boomers age, the competition just gets stiffer.

So, since I am in no condition to travel, all ya'll get on down/up/over here and I'll unlock the cabinet. I never drink alone but I admit to being sorely tempted just now.

Guess what! Mr. Kimball/Gomer/Forest/Goober is going to lose his job and we have an actual plumber here now. Still pretty scary and I'm afraid to look at his tool belt.

Kitty 08-19-2010 11:01 AM

Here's a going away present for your current plumber.........

AfterMyNap 08-19-2010 06:08 PM

What a difference a day (and some serious attitude) can make.

I now have a much less stinky and hopefully mold-free place (pending results of follow-up air tests), a brand new kitchen with all brand new appliances, cabinets and brand new flooring for the kitchen and bathroom on the way.

I'm also getting a brand new front storm door in front because the current one, while just fine, is the kind with a solid pane of glass which puts the anti-swat-me-down gizmo at the top, out of reach. I bang it around so much by accident, I'm scared of breaking it to bits. The new one will have that thingy at knee height with the added bonus of a screened window for maximum flow-through when human weather arrives.

God certainly heard and answered after my all-out tantrum/meltdown yesterday. Now, about that yacht...
