Multiple sclerosis symptoms vary with the season, study finds (Topix)

Multiple sclerosis, a disease in which a person's own immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord, is a lifelong problem -- but its effects can be highly seasonal, researchers say.

No kidding.

Dejibo 09-06-2010 06:29 PM

you dont say?!

SallyC 09-06-2010 07:27 PM

Duh! ah yup!!:D

I wonder how many research dollars it took to figure that one out.

ewizabeth 09-06-2010 07:42 PM

Yes, I read it and said DOH!! :D

Judy2 09-07-2010 02:40 AM

Sheesh!! They could have saved all that money and just asked any of us!! Duh.....ya think??

Kitty 09-07-2010 04:26 AM

I had the same reaction........WHY are they spending research money on something like this? It's like reporting that wearing a coat in winter tends to make you feel warmer.

Erin524 09-07-2010 05:58 AM

Cool! Proof!

I told my neuro that my MS is seasonal (that I have certain symptoms at certain times of the year) and he told me that was bullpoo...now I have something to show him that says it's true!

hollym 09-07-2010 08:36 AM

The study is from nearly 20 years ago and only had 44 people participating. I'm unimpressed.

kicker 09-07-2010 01:30 PM

Uh, DUH? I get frustrated at how they "approach" MS. It's like running in place.

kicker 09-07-2010 01:34 PM

I'm gonna run my own informal study.

Vote:
__MS sucks
__MS doesn't suck.

I wager the outcome will be MS sucks. This study cost $ 000000.00

hollym 09-07-2010 04:46 PM

One of the best studies ever was when Penn DOT paid something like $150,000 to someone to do a study of traffic problems on the Parkway West. The study concluded that there need to be more lanes. Heck, I could have told them that and only charged $50,000!

sabimax 09-07-2010 06:42 PM

LOL< maybe I should tell my old neuro this... as when I had tracked how I felt due to humidity and seasons... he said... well this can not be MS then... symptoms of MS do not come and go due to humidity!! (still undx but I have to laugh at some neuros that think they know all)

sabimax 09-07-2010 06:42 PM

kicker, I will be your first volunteer... I vote MS SUCKS!

My vote is that it <really BAD swear word> SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My mom was recently showing me this t-shirt she wants to get. It said "I (heart) MS!". (it was in her Mississippi magazine)

I looked at the advertisement and was immediately insulted and irritated. (I hate MS, and I also dont really care for the state of Mississippi...no offense to anyone from there) When I first saw the t-shirt, I knew she was reading her Mississippi magazine, but the first thing I thought when I saw the abbreviation on the t-shirt was "multiple sclerosis". Second thing I thought of was "Microsoft" (something else I dont really care for either)

My dad wants me to write a letter to the magazine and tell them how offended I am. I dont know if I should. I just know I really hate MS.

sabimax 09-08-2010 06:23 PM

Erin, although undx.... I find when I see MS initials that is all I think of too is multiple sclerosis

my massage therapist place is called massage studio so her card and the sign in window... is MS really big...

Erin524 09-08-2010 06:51 PM

I have a friend who's initials are MS, and he likes to go by his initials as a nickname. I'll just be calling him "Mike" or "Michael". If he complains...tough!

lady_express_44 09-09-2010 12:24 AM

But then again ... they have discovered that the highest incidence is during the month of June, regardless of whether a person is in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere ... which would be our summer and their WINTER:

my acupuncturist and I have known this for 15 years. It makes perfect sense in the Chinese Medicine paradigm too. But Western medicine has us by our proverbial b-lls

Erin524 09-09-2010 02:42 AM

Maybe it's sunspots causing it?

Or maybe Venus is rising and Mercury is in retrograde?

Lynn 09-09-2010 07:30 AM

Perhaps it happens when the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars.....

This will probably only make sense to the children of the sixties.
