Sister Wives - on TLC

This is about the new "reality" show "Sister Wives" on TLC. it is about a polygamist family with a man, three wives and their 12 children (with one on the way) It premiered last night.

I want to make this clear. THIS IS NOT ABOUT BASHING ANY LIFESTYLE OR SPECIFIC RELiGION. It is about the show.

I watched them on The Today Show last week and DVR'd it last night, am watching it now. It's interesting to me how they all work it out.

Laura was in the kitchen getting coffee and I said "I wouldn't mind having another wife around to help me clean" JOKING and she knew I was joking, she said "@#$@#$ @#$@#@ #%@#$@ @#$@#" I guess one will work with me, lol.

Anyone else catch it?

Kitty 09-27-2010 10:28 AM

I watched it. It was interesting to say the least. It's surely not a conventional lifestyle but it's more prevalent than I was aware. The first wife said she knew he would take another wife later on so I guess she was okay with it before they married. And she came from a family that practiced that lifestyle, too. So it didn't seem as strange to her as it would to someone who was used to monogamy. Is monogamy even around anymore? Seems everyone I know has dealt with an unfaithful spouse.

How do they get around the "illegal" part of living this lifestyle? Being on TV, this family is out there for the whole world to see.

He is only "Legally married" to the first wife. the other's he is married in the eyes of his God.

Also, they live in Utah, where Polygamy is a felony but not prosecuted any longer (according to the state statutes). There are currently hundreds of polygamy homes - mostly in Northern AZ. and Utah.

I've often thought I'd like to have a wife too- they're smart, they clean, make dinner, raise kids - and if you get a pretty one, get out of tickets! 8-D Some are really strong too!

SallyC 09-28-2010 11:07 AM

Yes, I would like 2 or three, myself...no kids though..:p:D ..

Oorrr, better yet, 2 or three cabana boys will do the trick..:cool::cool:

kicker 09-28-2010 11:20 AM

oooooooooh, a cabana boy!!
(Earl - I'm not joking - I think.)

Kitty 09-28-2010 11:26 AM

Now that would make an interesting reality show......."Cabana Boys of NT"!

Thanks for the info, Earl. I didn't realize it was so common out there, although I do know that Utah used to have "large families". It doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but then I had trouble having one husband!! lol :)

Kitty 09-29-2010 08:01 AM

I saw on an Internet newsfeed that Utah police are investigating the family for bigamy.

The news reported last night that charges are being filed against the family, and they are cancelling the show. The family knew they were taking a risk when they argreed to do the show, but wanted to bring light to the well known secret that is polyigamy. 15 minutes of fame, leds to 15 months in jail...crazy, just crazy.

I know I would love to have a wife to help me. Go girl! I say that, but dont really know for sure how I would feel.

hollym 09-30-2010 10:41 AM

I'd love to have a wife, too, but she can't sleep with my husband! I don't understand how they are OK sharing?? That's the part I can't get past.

Kitty 09-30-2010 10:59 AM

I agree, Holly. I'll share the housework, the shopping, the expenses.....but not the DH. I wonder how he'd feel if one of his "wives" decided she wanted two husbands?

kicker 09-30-2010 11:04 AM

Maybe 2 Cabana boys? Husbands can be so demanding.

Kitty 09-30-2010 11:10 AM

Exactly.....this should tell the men something. You never hear of a woman with two husbands. Or at least not one that's willing to go public with it! :o Who needs the extra work? It'd be like taking on another child almost. Except larger and more demanding! :p No thanks......I'll take my Danielle Steel novel and a box of Dove chocolates!

I was thinking that exact same thing! Why do you never see one of these polygamist families with one wife and multiple husbands? Oh never mind, who wants more than one husband? Kicker is right! Cabana boys are the answer...

Dejibo 10-01-2010 07:32 AM

ok, dont throw stones at me, but IF, and thats a HUGE if I would allow another woman into my home, I would be glad if she took some of the "wifely duties" now, before you dunk me in boiling oil, let me explain. My DH is a wonderful man. He is kind, thoughtful, and a hard worker. Great provider and easily pleased, but...throughout our marriage, I have had an extremely low sex drive. Is it MS? is it meds? is it exhaustion? either way, I am just not as willing as he is to find a sack to have at it. I do what every good woman does. i take good care of him, but I must admit my heart isnt always in it. How wonderful would that be to have a relief pitcher? not in the mood? send Cyndi! Have a back ache? Send Molly! Need your own feet rubbed (lets face it husbands stink at rubbing feet) call Linda!

I am betting I am in the minority, but IF i would ever ever ever allow that to happen, I would want help in that department too. :o

As for taking on a 2nd husband....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH yeah...I would rather have a root canal.

I adore my DH and would be quite lost without him, but should anything happen to him. Aint no way in hadies i would do it again.

Why did they move Robyn into a house a block away? Why was she not moved into the home with the other ladies? Her son has asperbergers syndrome and I wondered how tough this whole situation would be on him. Meri looked like she was strained with bringing in another wife. She says she is committed to this life, but cried so easily when she thought about a new wife. I wanted to hug her!

I think it's because she is not "married" to him yet.

If anyone has seen the show "big love" on HBO, the wives on that show each has their own house on a street corner, and the fencing from the street look like sep. homes, but the back yards are all shared. No fencing between them. This is what Kody should get, so each wife has her own home. I am not sure if we will ever see the end of this. I have heard they canceled the show.

The District attorney and Lehi, Utah police are investigating them for Bigomy, even though they are not legally married to more than one, if you live together in the same home in Utah, it is Bigomy. I hope we get to see the outcome.

See? he should have taken a page out of the "Big Love" playbook and kept each wife in their own home. He can afford a big house, and drive an $80,000 lexus, he should buy three (or four now) sep. homes next to eachother.

Kitty 11-01-2010 01:36 PM

I watched the special on TLC they had last night. Kody and Robyn are finally "married". Not sure if it's legal or not but they had a ceremony and a big reception. Looked like fun!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I heard Robyn say that her kids (2 girls and a boy) live at the "big house" with all their new siblings and she still lives in her home that she just moved to. I didn't hear her complaining!

Ya'll don't shoot me (yet) but all those women seemed so nice....and genuinely seemed to get along with each other and really seemed like sisters. It actually got me to thinking.......these girls might be onto something. They sort of beat the guy at his own game.....assuming he is like the majority of (most) men.

KajunButterfly 11-04-2010 09:04 PM

Well Dej, I guess I am in the minority here also..I wish my hubby would get at LEAST 2 more wives..one to do house work and 1 for "wifely duties" Just so she wouldn't get the money!

Dejibo 11-05-2010 09:03 AM

I wouldnt mind sharing the money either if she was under the roof with us. I just dont have enough hours in the day, and boy oh boy I could use a sister wife of my very own. Just think, someone to share the laundry, dishes, cooking, child care, vacuuming, and yes "wifely duties"

In a way I feel horrible for these women, as now they are all in public scrutiny and wont find quiet and peace anymore. They were paid well to share their story, but sometimes money aint worth it.

Kitty 11-08-2010 08:41 AM

I was talking to my sister (my real sister) last night and she wanted to know how to apply for a position as a "sister wife"! :D She said it looks like a win-win situation....for the women. There's always someone around to help you with whatever you need...always a friend there to go shopping, just talk, help with the kids, cook, clean. Heck........as long as the hubby had direct deposit there's really no need for him to even show up!

The more I thought about it the more I agree with her! :p

Dejibo 11-08-2010 10:21 AM

can you imagine if they gang up on hubby? You know the women really run the house, children and budgets in most homes. That poor guy must work from sun up to sun down to bring home the bacon for 4. I dont know how he has the energy for "husband duties" let alone time to watch the game on TV.

the more I think about it, the more I think its a good thing. I would NOT want it in reverse. Can you imagine 3 husbands? 3x the amount of cooking, cleaning, beds, toilets, and whining when they are sick?! I have a good one, and wouldnt trade him, but wouldnt want two of him either.

Kitty 11-08-2010 11:39 AM

All of the women work with the exception of one (Christine, I think).....the one who just had the baby. I wonder how they keep track of their finances? How do they file taxes? All of the women are legally "single" with the exception of Meri.
