Husband Had Severe Stroke

Hi there Husband had severe stoke on left side of Brain
in July 2020 left him paralyzed with very lil speech ~ has Aphasia and Apraxia
was in Hospital for 2 weeks
transferred to Rehab right from Hospital for 4 weeks
THERAPY IS A WONDERFUL THING
FROM DAY ONE TILL NOW I DIDNT THINK THE POOR MAN
WOULD EVER WALK AGAIN ... he s no marathon runner
for sure but HE IS STANDING ON HIS OWN 2 FEET (w/a one sided quad cane)
Applied for SS just wondering how long all this stuff takes place
he also had LTD that he took out out work .. but they have been nothing but a headache FOR ME ... ALONG WITH ALL THE MEDICAL ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AND MY POOR HUSBANDS HEALTH .. I HAVE LEFT MY JOB CUS IT IS A FULL TIME JOB TAKING CARE OF HIM and all I have been doing on top of that is running around for insurance people with this poor man who can barely walk and cannot talk in tow with me ...
and going on line here and googling is the worst .. only get HORROR STORIES !!!
Can I expect anything good happening to us ????!!!

PS : I HONESTLY THINK I'M GOING TO NEED SSD AFTER ALL THIS ....

Depends on if there is a backlog in your state. It can take from a few months to years! If you have an attorney ask him or her if there is a backlog.

Your insurance does not provide for home health care? If not, check with your local Social Service department.

In PA the initial application takes about 3 months to review.
I hope things get better for you! God Bless!

That is awful I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you realize that, with all the focus on your husband you have a tendency to not take care of yourself. Take time for yourself once a week, I know it's hard but just forget everything for a few hours and go relax in the tub or go for a drive or walk. If your not healthy then he's gonna suffer also. I hope you have no problems, there is no question IMO he is disabled.

Janke 10-14-2010 09:06 PM

Your husband needs to file a claim. Start online. 800-772-1213. Be thorough. Answer all the questions. Don't expect that the records will necessarily speak for themselves.

There is a five month non-pay waiting period that would run from 8/10-12/10 if he is found disabled as of 7/10. First payment would then come sometime in 1/11. Even if he is found disabled the day you submit the claim. Also, with CVA, DDS will often wait 90 days post stroke for evidence showing how much recovery there has been.

But none of this should stop your husband from filing a claim now.

Thank You Everyone for the advice <3
OMG ~> Time for myself is only more tears I shed .. I know sounds pitiful but I CAN'T HELP IT THE **** TEARS COME AUTOMATICALLY .. Im a cry baby.

So "Jank
I did file on Aug 18 to ssa they then sent it over to ssd and I then got a call from the "Claim Examiner" like 2 wks later telling me that there is a 3 month "recovery" period for people who have had a Stroke or Heart Attack and that I should hear back in October ... just wondering how they go about that do they call or send out a letter on how his health is at the moment ?
Thanks

Have you applied for food stamps, believe it or not that can help you. There are a lot of services that he may qualify for. You'll have to do a little research and find out what agencies you can get help from, but in certain states they offer help with your prescriptions, cable bill, electric bill and transportation. You may get your benefits in 3 to 5 months.

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/159

Here is also some information on food stamps that may help you. I know you don't have a lot of time so I'll try to put up as many links as I can.

SSD will be in contact w/your hubby's treating physician(s) recarding his "recovery."

legalmania 10-15-2010 04:37 PM

You should also receive letters from SSDI or SSI. Probably several letters, some will say one thing and then some will say something totally different. You'll probably spend a lot of time on the phone, but you've already been doing that. Then again everything could go smoothly. I hope for the latter.

P.S. If that is your picture you look like your holding up pretty well, but your eyes do look a little tired. Oh I just read you've been crying, I wouldn't call it being a cry baby with what you are going through. It's better to get it out then hold it in.

finz 10-16-2010 04:00 PM

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's stroke.

Remember that even if/when he gets approved for SSDI, Medicare doesn't kick in for 2 years from his date of disability. I don't know if you can still get COBRA coverage from your job or if you will need to apply for Medicaid, but don't let your health insurance coverage lapse !

Take Care.

Ss and Insur ...

Well Social Security called today he will be sending out the Med Releases to the Doctor and Rehab that my husband is going to, this week 3month progress and recovery period is over, so I'm hoping that the Doc and Therapy get the records out quick :) and on the down side
Hubby s LTD Insurance that he took out at work is closing the claim until they receive some more documents yet again .... but I got that under wraps this week seems to me like there are just keep prolonging the claim on purpose (just a feeling I got) and I will be faxing every single paper I got right over to them !!
 I am at my wits end with all this crap ...

Okay, quick update, Husband received letter from SS with an appt. to go see their Dr. on Dec 23. As for my Husband we are taking day by day, going to Speech therapy 2x a wk Physical and Occupational 3x a wk and saying my prayers everyday <3 He has more vocabulary now but still cannot give you a sentence or hold a conversation, he is starting to say NO instead of YES TO EVERYTHING ... LOL, he can walk with a quad cane his right arm is still very weak and weaker in his hand, no grip.and of course his spirits and attitude is what keep ME GOING, so crazy so unbelievable ... I m just so amazed at how this man who has had this severe stroke ~ which affected his speech and the movement of his right side has the ability to lift not only my spirits but others .
YES THIS IS A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS FOR ME AND MY FAMILY <3
So wish us luck and a lil pray for next week !

That's good news and an inspiration. It is always important to be upbeat and positive EXCEPT when having a consultative exam by Social Security. Then he needs to be brutally honest about his limitations. High spirit and good attitude will get him through life but he doesn't want to minimize the effects of the stroke when he is examined by SSA. He wants to be sure that the examining doctor can observe his disabilities more than his abilities. Yes, it can be a bit demoralizing, but he needs to be sure that the examining doctor doesn't write down that he said he has no problems. List all the problems. All of them. Memory, speech, gait, weakness, grip, depression, lethargy. How much exertion tires him out, how much weight can he lift and carry and for how long and how far. Be honest, not positive.

finz 12-17-2010 05:40 AM

I'm glad your husband is pushing through this YY. I hope that it goes well for you on the 23rd.

Yup Yup 12-17-2010 06:46 AM

Hi Guys
Oh don't get me wrong the man is in pain !
You can't even touch his right hand .. he so protective of it to :(
and the arm he can not extend out he can bend it from the elbow
with ALL THE STRENGTH THAT HE CAN and what a struggle that is even
looks like by his face :(
You can obviously see that his walking with a quad cane
that he NEEDS TO GET AROUND cause he cannot go to far with out one
In the house I when he is up and walking around he stops and I have to straighten his toes out cause they are so curled up and tight .
He has a few tremors throughout the day on the right side.
Still needs some assistance with his daily living u know Sh* Shower and Shave .. etc that type of stuff. Getting up of the Chairs, bed I so afraid that he will fall outta of bed when getting out ... he has once already that was a nitemare, trying to get him up !!
So I m hoping once the Doc ACTUALLY SEES him it will tell him right away
that yeah the man has a disability there is no denying that
Thanks :)

Hi Everyone
Well just an update on my Hubby's SS Doctors Visit today ...
OMG the Dr might have been in the room a TOTAL OF 3 MIN.
Really not much was said due to my husband having Aphasia
and he basically asked when he had the stroke I told him and he
said that no need
to explain I have all the details in front on me (nicely of course).
He asked him how he was walking and of course my husband looks at
me in return to answer him so I told him that he basically answers yes to everything and is now beginning to answer with a No, told him that he can walk with a shuffle and the hand still has no movement, so it seemed to me that it was just one look from the dr so they can clearly see indeed what physical shape he is in, but the dr was a nice guy wrote down that he has aphasia told my husband he had seen a lady who only said NO and don't give up, keep on fighting .. and of course my husband got choked up which in turned had the friggin tears weld up in my eyes and our way we shuffled with the doc "wishing us luck and hopefully we'll have no problems "... and that was basically the end of it .. the nurse was in the room longer then the dr taking my my hubby's vital signs, so I guess we just have to wait on feedback from SS Office.

Usually when they call it's to tell you about receiving your benefits. You haven't gotten an approval letter yet? It's been almost 5 months correct? So that would be about right. Have you been taking care of yourself as I asked? I hope so.

This is probably going to be the longest weekend ever. I have high hopes for you guys. They usually don't call you unless you call them. They usually send a letter to let you down. I have heard of people getting a phone call before they get the approval letter. Well, my roommate wants to go out, so while your hoping for conversation, I'm telling my roommate to shut up. Isn't life so strange? Here's a song for you and your hubby, hang in guys.

Hello Yup Yup,
I pray to god that the phone call is for good news. The good lord knows that you and your husband deserve a break, especially your husband. I also feel as everyone else does, you should give yourself a great big pat on the back. You deserve it. I know my wife is a champ, she has waited on me hand and foot because of this knee replacement I had back in August. I don’t know what I would do without her. My dad has had several mini strokes in the past few years and they said he was a perfect candidate for a massive stroke. His doctor at the Sacret Heart Hospital in Pensacola Florida told him to sign up for his disability probably 15 years ago. That doctor sent anything and everything he could to social security, my dad was approved and drawing a check within 3 or 4 months. I wish everybody had a doctor that was that motivated. We lost dad back in May of 2010 because of that massive stroke but he did live a long and happy life and god knows he is in a much better place.

The best of luck with everything.
