Stupid appliance tricks
So Bob came downstairs and found me, and said "Can you come see what's making that noise?" (Not what you want to hear somebody say) So I went upstairs and tracked it down to the "control panel" on the electric range.
I'm guessing it's the motor (?) of the clock/timer giving out. Can't imagine what else would be in an electric stove that would start making noise. We shut off the circuit breaker because we don't want to monkey around with electrical stuff, waiting for a call back from my son to see if he can fix it or we need to call *shudder* a repairman. I'm hoping that somebody with some muscle and some electrical knowledge (that would be my son) could pull the stove out and look behind it, and yank whatever wire(s) go to the timer we never use anyway. Hoping he's not working overtime or something. Frustrating when neither of us have the knowledge or physical capability to do such things ourselves, or the $$$ to just pick up the phone and call the guy who'll be here somewhere between noon and March. Can't believe I'm having trouble with that stove; it's only 22 years old. :D |

They are still working, although they don't get much use, anymore. The Microwave is my new best friend and I did have to replace it once, since 1980....I think I replaced the Micro in 2005. |
Most of the stuff in my house is on borrowed time. My car is 11. The TV and refrigerator are 12, the computer is 6 or 7, the hot water heater is 22, the well pump is maybe 35?
Nothing will be "upgraded". We're going to run everything into the ground and replace if necessary. It didn't take long to find out what "fixed income" really means. It means "not enough income to get anything fixed". :D |
I do the same thing. I buy quality and then run them till they drop. Harvest yellow or avacado green? who cares?! it works! When I sold my last house I did upgrade the appliances, but only because it was on sale. I donated the old stuff to a nice family that needed them. 5 years later, and the donated stuff is still working, and the new stuff that I put in the house was upgraded not long after I sold it. new owners wanted stainless. sheesh! could have saved myself some money. :(
|
Me too, on appliance colors. My previous fridge was Harvest Gold. I think my stove is "wheat". I got it for a good price because it had a little dent. I'm not crazy about black appliances (though they look nifty in the right kitcken), but if my next stove or refrigerator was, say, half price...I wouldn't care if it was hunter orange.

Mine are stainless, way before their time.:D

We had our house built in 1978. So our kitchen is all in avacado. We even have formica counter tops. I went to a yard sale onece and got a wonderful clock pot. Worked fine. The thing wrong with it? It was that popular orange color that seems to escape my brain right now and she had completely redone her kitchen. 10 years later I am still using it.
|
Um. Doesn't everybody have formica counters? *sigh* I'm so old that I can remember when I'd fantasize, "someday I'm going to have formica counters in my kitchen." *sigh again*

I HATE granite counter tops. they are porous and stain, and absorb whatever gets on top. its an awful combo for a place full of splashing liquids and hot pots. you cant sit a pot on it, or you will burn it! Why bother?! Butcher block or laminate is great. if you really want to get fancy do a corian top. I am painting my builder grade cabinets to a white. I have black appliances and it will be wonderful! will post pics when I am done.

Yes, I don't understand all this love for granite counter tops. I watch HGTV and see peeps turn down beautiful homes, because the kit ctr tops are not granite:rolleyes:. I think they are ugly as he11.

I sit there with my jaw hanging down when I see people on House Hunters walking around a house twenty times better than anything I could even DREAM of living in, and saying "We'd have to gut the whole thing, of course." Well, of course.

They walk around that wonderful home and turn it down because the color of the painted kitchen cabinets is wrong. Or the play room has the wrong color. People, get real. You don't have to have it perfect when you move in. Let the house help tell you what it wants to be!
Has anyone had one of those concrete counter tops? I love it when they stain them. They are just gorgeous. |
I'd like to think that I wouldn't turn into one of those people, turning up my nose at those beautiful homes, if a whole pile of money fell out of the sky.
Realistically? If you can afford it, and you're planning to live there a long time, why not have exactly what you want? I get that. But it's still hard to wrap my mind around being ABLE to do that! Of course, if a whole pile of money fell out of the sky, it would probably fall on my head and paralyze me from the nose down or something. Be careful what you wish for. :D |
We have Silestone counters. A man-made substance from glass-like material available in many multicolored looks, etc. It's made of Quartz, cleans up and shines with Windex, is solid (laminates can peel), is totally burn-proof, non-porous - I LOVE IT. Would get it again. 8 years later, still looks great and new.

I would love concrete counter tops with green sea glass mixed in, would that be nice?
I am currently painting my kitchen cabinets. They are wood colored and just a builders grade cabinet. not fancy cherry or oak. just wood. At first the hubby freaked out. You CANT paint them! Then i showed him several black and white kitchens in magazines. now he is excited to see how pretty our kitchen will be. Just a lick of paint and it will be wonderful! I didnt replace the light fixture above the sink or island, I painted them! six bucks versus sixty bucks. I wouldnt mind corian counter tops or butcher block, because they are long haul materials. stone surface stuff requires alot of care, and maintenance. I dont want to work for my kitchen, I want it to work for me. |
I just want it to work.
|
Yeah, I'd like to have a self-cooking, self-serving, self-cleaning kitchen.:D:p:D
|
I want Rosie from the Jetsons!
|
Hmm, yeah. I told my daughter the other day that all I wanted was my housework done for me (which Bob pretty much does), my clothes laundered, my food cooked and served, my groceries bought, my finances taken care of, and my hair washed. I'll brush my own teeth. My daughter said, "Um, that would be a nursing home." GACK!!!

I need a wife. :( think the sister wives need more help?
