Coffee Lovers Unite!

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only coffee drinker here. Here's my question. What's the best coffee maker to buy? I've been looking and looking.....and know that I can't buy a cheap one and expect miracles.......but some are just outrageously expensive. And I can't justify spending that much money on something that only I use.

I have a Mr. Coffee now and it does the job but I know it's days are numbered. I've had it for years and it's starting to make alot of noise as it brews the coffee whereas it was very quiet when it was newer.

I've thought about the Keurig - here's a link that shows what it's all about: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/v...My-KCup-Filter. This seems like a great buy....and I can get easy pay, too! Here's another version that I think I like better but it's more expensive: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/v...wer-w-48-KCups.

Any suggestions? :)

I am a tea drinker, but the hubby loves coffee.

I got the Tassimo because its the only one that makes a cappuchino or latte. Keurig is a tidy little machine, but you cant make special drinks from it. I am envious of the amount of teas for that machine tho. Keurig offers a milk frother for extra money. I dont want two machines. So, Tassimo is a great little machine and does great coffee and tea and hot chocolate as well.

I am currently looking at the Cusinart machine that holds the Keurig pods, and will allow you to adjust from a 2oz cup to a 12oz coffee mug. It will also let you just have hot water, so if you want a package of instant oatmeal or a regular cup of tea, you dont need to heat a whole pot of water for it, just a touch of the button and its ready. its only a fraction more expensive than the Keurig, but looks better, and does more things. its actually less expenive on Amazon.com than the Keurig best model.

Chai tea! I just love chai tea, now that I can get happy about.

Didn't AMN buy a coffee maker ( Joe keeps popping into my head.) She always seemed a very careful, discriminating consumer and I think she was pleased with her purchase. Anyone remember specifics? AMN, you out there?

I remember her coffee maker. I had one just like it. And yes, she named hers Joe! I never named mine. :o It's a good brand and made good coffee but it conked out after a few years. Probably a combination of me not taking good care of it and age (the coffee maker's age....not mine). It was a Hamilton Beach Brewstation.

Kelly - They are pretty neat but, IMO, the cost of the little coffee packets would not justify it. At $60 for 108 of the K-cups, you could buy a lot of regular coffee for that price. In the long run, it may end up costing you a lot more. We buy the big 2 lb containers for around $7 and it says it makes 270 6oz cups of coffee. Depending on how much you drink, 270 6oz cups could last 270 days and, if I did the math right, would cost $0.025 per cup as opposed to $0.55 per cup with the Keurig.

They do make smaller coffee makers (4 cup) that work real well. I like the Black & Deckers as we have one that lasted over 10 years. We had to get a new one because would couldn't find a replacement carafe for it.

Kitty 12-01-2010 11:51 AM

You can use regular coffee in the Keurig.......they just have the little K-cups if you like to have different kinds of coffee (or tea) and don't want to brew a whole pot of one particular flavor. I buy the Publix brand Greenwise Organic coffee and would use jut that. I think the Keurig from QVC comes with a few K-cups, too, but I wouldn't reorder any more.

It makes hot chocolate, too! I'm not really interested in the specialty coffees or coffee drinks. I like my plain old coffee.

My son has a Keurig and absolutely LOVES it. But they don't drink coffee all day long like some people. He likes it for the variety.

I think for volume, the Keurig is too pricey myself. Back in the day when my GI tract accepted coffee, I just had a cheapy one for us.
I used the flavored creamers for taste. Those days are over for me!

But hubby now just drinks a caffeinated cup in the morning and decaf during the day, so he likes a quality instant. He has always been easy to please! (lucky me!!) Thank you Folger's!

Kitty 12-01-2010 11:59 AM

I usually drink 2 cups in the morning. Sometimes more. But with the Keurig, you have no waste. You brew a cup at a time so if you decide after the first one you don't want anymore there's none left in the pot to go stale and cold.

I'd enjoy the variety of coffee every once in a while. I'm usually not a big fan of flavored coffee. I use organic half and half for my creamer.

Maybe you should get the Keurig for yourself and put your old one in the cupboard for when you need more than one cup...that way it'll last longer, and you won't have to brew more than one cup with the new one...

That's a good idea. I've often thought about what I'd do if my coffee maker decided to fizzle out on me and I didn't have another way to make coffee! Oh, the horror!

mrsD 12-01-2010 12:44 PM

You could also get a French press... they tend to be expensive, but make really strong coffee. Non electric too.

We had one on vacation, and that is when I learned how strong coffee can be a bomb to the GI tract! That is when I first had my glimmers of coffee intolerance, which has spread now to any kind of coffee, decaf included.

I love coffee too, the aroma and everything! DANG!

Here is an affordable one.... bidding ends in 1 hr...on EBAY:

This is an affordable NEW one:

Buy It now free shipping!

The press makes strong coffee.

I just bought a tea pot for myself. I decided the painted mug I use may be dangerous (given the heavy metals from decorating from Asia), so I bought a glass teapot on Ebay for 6.95. It seems to be the type hotels use, takes up little room, but holds 700ml which is about my morning tea quantity.

here it is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Stainless-Steel-...item3a60ccbe02

Wow I see it bid up very high this time. No one bid on mine and I got it for 6.95! Can't put in microwave or on stove, but that wasn't necessary for me. It is a really nice little thingey! (for us)
Hubby thinks it comes from a hotel supply... he's seen them on carts in the more up scale hotels when he travels for work.

The Mr. Coffee 12 cup or the 4 cup does a good job. No fancy name coffee just Folger's or Maxwell House. How good it is can depend on your water and how strong you make it. We do not like strong coffee and I do not drink it all day regardless. A cup in the morning (8 oz. mug) and then I'm good.

If your maker is kind of old, there is a product called DipIt that cleans the lime and gunk out of the innards of the makers.

I can only drink Starbucks, can't stand the chemical taste of Folgers, etc. My esspresso maker has lasted for years(krupps), with help from DipIt. I'll have 2-3 shots during the course of my day.

Pretty much, any coffee maker will make coffee fine. The more important things are: The water has to be very good, no chlorine or chemicals, the coffee has to be fresh, keep it in the fridge to keep it very fresh and don't let it sit for hours. If you aren't drinking it promptly, make less.

I use a PUR water filter to make the water the best, only use Folgers, darkest possible, have a four cup machine.

You can use one part white vinegar and two parts water as well. Go thru the cycle. Rinse out and then go thru the cycle again with just water.

Guess I don't notice any chemical taste from Folger's coffee or Maxwell House coffee. I just make plain good old coffee and not too strong. It is whatever people like.

I do have the PUR water filter and use fresh organic coffee (kept in the freezer). The coffee is really not bad.....and I only make three cups at a time. The more I think about it the more I just cannot justify spending $100 or more on a coffee maker. 99% of the time it's just me here drinking it. Rarely do I ever have company who wants coffee.

You're right.......good, clean, fresh water makes all the difference. Maybe I'll just get another Mr. Coffee for $20 so I'll at least have a backup waiting when mine bites the dust! ;)

Sounds like a good plan Kitty.:)

And when they die, you save the pot to replace the ones you will drop/break.

I have a Hamilton Beach Brewstation. It's absolutely terrific. It doesn't keep "cooking" the coffee once it's been brewed. Check out Amazon for a good deal on it.
