Inositol
I recently purchased some 1,000 mg Inositol caplets from Puritan's Pride. I read that it "aids in the breakdown of fats, helps in the reduction of blood cholesterol, and helps to prevent thinning hair. It promotes the export of fat from the liver. Inositol is required for the proper function of several brain neurotransmitters. Inositol may improve nerve conduction velocities in diabetics with peripheral neuropathy. Inositol works together with other methyl donors such as TMG or SAMe. Inositol may help protect against atherosclerosis and hair loss."
I'm not so concerned about thinning hair as I am about atherosclerosis. My last blood workup showed that my triglycerides were on the high side of normal. I read that Insitol would help with this. I'm also taking about 900 mg of krill oil a day, too, in an effort to avoid medication. Has anyone taken Inositol and what do you think of it? |
please dont take offense, but my understanding of elevate trig. is that it indicates excess caloric intake......now, hopefully mrsd will come along and give you more helpful input!

Triglyerides also come when people are being treated with steroids.
Diet is a factor, for some people. Carbs (all that wonderful homemade bread???) and pasta will do it. Ice Cream and sugar... also. There are two forms of inositol out there now. The regular one, is also called myo-inositol. And a new one for PCOS and insulin resistance called d-chiro inositol..much more expensive. Inositol is also used to treat anxiety and OCD, in the gram range, of dosing. My husband and son use it in powder form (cheaper that way) in juice daily. 8oz of Jarrow pharmaceutical grade costs about $12.00 at iherb and lasts more than 6mos for my husband. This Wiki article is pretty good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inositol |
This is worrisome to me because I had my blood tested after I had just lost about 48 pounds! No sugar and very little carbs. I haven't been eating the bread I've been making....or very little of it. DS usually eats it all! I'm wondering if the test was somehow skewed. Anyway, my PCP said that I could take 900 mg. of krill oil per day instead of whatever prescription drug he was recommending. When I read about Inositol it sort of seemed like it might help. I've just been taking one per day along with my krill oil.

So what were your triglycerides? Do you recall the reading?
More here: http://www.ehow.com/about_5325434_ra...de-levels.html |
I just looked on the test results the doctor gave me a copy of and they were 160. He said that was considered on the high side of normal. I've continued with the same diet I'd been on......no salt, low fat, low carbs and mostly organic. I've got to go back for a retest before the end of the year. We'll see what that one says. Oh, and the other one was a fasting test, too.
Edit to add: I was also on HBP medication prior to this test being done. My BP had come way down so he took me off of that med. I'm wondering if that med (Lisinopril) might have been a contributing factor. |
I don't think your reading is that worrisome.
Sometimes this comes with age... But you know, there are people with 500 walking around commonly. I've been told by some nurses, that they can see the fats rise to the top of the test tube when drawing blood. And healthy kids, taking Accutane (the acne drug) can have readings over 1000+ !!! Mine vary from 150-170... they used to be 375! But when I started fish oil they went way down. So you are basically normal, on the high end. The krill oil will help. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this time. |
These are the most likely to cause elevations (notice how Accutane is not listed, and it is the WORST offender).
http://www.ehow.com/facts_5732481_ki...ycerides_.html I've been taking ACE inhibitors for years, and they never seem to affect my readings. But I did use a beta blocker before that, and that is when my levels WERE higher too. They were also higher back when I was hypothyroid and not treated yet. To get a good reading it should be fasting. |

That sounds pretty good (and low) to me! If mine was 500.....I'd be worried! Sometimes I wonder if doctors get a kickback for the meds they convince you to take. He really pushed the prescription med but I was persistent with wanting to take krill and he finally said that was fine to do. Plus, the krill is about $30 per month and the script was about $80! |
The RX med is just fish oil.... Lovaza.
There are many OTC ones for less money. I am waiting for blood work to come back, since I switched from Fish oil to Krill last spring. If my triglycerides have gone up (with me on a very very low sugar intake,), I'll have to go back on the fish oil. :Dunno: My doctor was interested in the change too. |
