coffee makers
I have a tassimo and love it, but the discs for it are hard to find. I am considering a keurig style maker because the cups are so easy to come by. I also understand you can use your own coffee, or stick a tea bag in the Kcup and use your own stuff. Also hot water can be gotten by just closing the lid and not using a cup.
My question is what model do I get? I dont need a timer function to wake me, so no need to waste money on that. I would like to choose my cup size, and want more than a single serving of water in the machine. Do any of you have this machine? what can you tell me? |
My sister got one for Christmas...
I haven't talked to her yet but will find out the particulars and how she likes it... I'll get back to you asap. :) Abbie P.S. I would love to have one of these too.... :D |
I've got one. Sorry I didn't see this sooner.
It has a reservoir that holds at least five cups of water. You can select cup size, which will affect the strength of the coffee. The little thing they have for tea bags/own coffee is neat -- but the one for the little coffee packets has to be taken out in order to use it. I only add that since I almost forgot once, LOL! I was skeptical when the hubby brought this home, but it's worked out a lot better than I had hoped. Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond have been the best places around here so far for coffee packets. Quite a variety running around out there. Oh, and we have the one with the timer. Helpful since it takes a minute or two for the water to heat up. |
so the water isnt instant hot like Tassimo, and you have to remove the guts to fit in the Kcup holder. I would like to know if I can just get a cup of hot water from it, or will it only work with a cup in place? I like instant oatmeal and this would be helpful.
Anyone else? |
I'm going to see if others post on this because I am curious about this machine, too.
|
I'm still using my Mr. Coffee but would love one of the ones that makes 1 cup at a time. Tassimo or Keurig. I just can't convince myself to spend the money on it since the one I have still works.
|
Love the Tassimo, but the Keurig does many more teas, and you can put your own tea bag into the Kcup and use it that way, or your own coffee grounds.
I am hoping that I can also get hot water from it, and then I would invest, if not...i hesitate. |
Dej,
How about the Keurig mini? Doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of the regulars, but maybe it's up your alley, and it's a lot cheaper, too. I'm considering it... |
We have a Keurig at work and you can get just hot water from it. Just make sure the K-cup holder is empty and clean. (I won't use the one at work because some people mess with the K-cup foil and then you wind up with who knows what grounds in with your drink.) I don't know what model ours is but we've had it for less than a year. When you turn it on it takes a minute for the water to heat up. If you don't turn it off you will have hot water throughout the day. The one at work has a tank that holds water for several cups. You can make two sizes of liquid warmth. No timer with ours. It is nice until you have stray grounds from mis-handling of K-cups. You can get off brand K-cups too.

TY! this answers my question exactly! I would buy and take MY OWN Kcup if I worked at one of those places. I hate coffee, and it would spoil the taste of my tea.
I am going to invest in one! I think I want the mid ranged one. I dont need a timer to wake me up with fresh anything, but I would like to pick my cup size. The mini one doesnt allow you to choose between a 6oz cup and an 8 oz cup or a travel mug. I also like the Cusinart one, that holds Kcups. it has a rinse feature, and does spit out hot water. Wahoo! I have been asking and asking and this is the first time I got my answer. |
I don't exactly know what you guys mean. To get hot water & keep it hot, why not put water in your Mr Coffee with no coffee grounds then just keep it on all day? I say "Mr Coffee" but of course you can use any drip pot.
|
The coffee pots we are talking about do one cup at a time. This way you dont have a pot of anything sitting on your counter top all day and you dont waste grounds by making cups that no one is going to drink. Coffee and special teas are expensive, and while a wonderful treat, it would be cost prohibitive to leave pot after pot on the burner.
I also find that after coffee has been brewed in a pot the whole thing tastes bitter to me. Even if you run plain water thru it, the bitter after taste remains. Most drip coffee makers also have a burned taste to the water after they have been run thru the machine. Gawd Im fussy. I just want some yummy teas without having to make a pot each time. These makers do single cups, and no clean up. Just chuck the little container that the tea/coffee came in. Tassimo.com will show you some nice things. |
Maybe I should explain better why I won't use the one at work. It is for staff and the public. The staff knows what they are doing, it is the public that doesn't. Yes we have a sign, but no one reads it. (The main reason to go where I work is to read. Go figure!) The K-cup has a foil top. If a moron pierces the foil, or worse yet removes it, you have grounds in the machine where they don't belong. (The machine lid pierces the foil for you.) To clean, let the K-cup lid open overnight so the grounds you can see dry. Remove anything that can fall off the machine the next morning. Turn machine on its side, or upside down, and brush out the dried grounds. Put everything back together and make a cup of hot water. This will help get rid of the grounds you can't see. Make your drink and hope for the best. Our machine has a de-scaling button.
|
descaling? do I need to worry about that? use special water? or have special cleaners? that was something I had not considered.
|
The booklet that came with our machine says to use spring water. It doesn't matter what water you use it will form mineral deposits in the machine. How often you use the de-scale setting depends on the water you use. I think the de-scale routine is one cycle of vinegar followed by two of plain water.

hi dej,
i have had one for a few yrs and like it very much. once a yr you should descale it using vinegar to make sure stuff from water doesn't stop it up. i can adjust the amt of water in the cup but it does only make 1 cup at a time. it's also very hot which i really like. they say to use filtered water. that comes out of my fridge so it's easy for me. make sure you write down the model and serial #'s because if you ever have to call the comp they'll ask you. |
I got the Cusinart coffee machine. it was $250 in several places. I found it at Kohls for $199 with a 30% off coupon. it ended up being less expensive than the mid level machine for Keurig.
We have been testing coffee and teas and cocoa in it. I have found out quickly that splenda has changed its name from Splenda to sucrolose and WOW what a headache I get from that stuff. I am learning to read lables on coffee! There is a store in town that will sell one pod or Kcup at a time so we have been able to test out many coffees while not having to buy them by the box. The DH is VERY picky and its making me insane. So far the clear winner is Wolfgang Pucks breakfast in bed. Its mild, and non acidic. 99% of the coffee out there my DH says is bitter or acidic. Its been quite the challenge to find stuff for him. I had Timothy's white hot chocolate and WOW was it yum! but I got an almost instant headache from the splenda. I hope they start changing to stevia if they insist on using artificial sweetners. |
