I fell and hurt my shoulder....

today we were visiting some friends of ours in another town. Jeff played a nice concert and we had a lotof fun with them last night. went to our hotel and I could not sleep so was very groggy this morning.
I was wearing my shoe boots that had a 3 inch heel.
at noon we went to their house to take them out to lunch, when we got there I was walking down stairs that had bricks and dirt. I was on the last stair and their little girl, margo, 3 held up her arms and wanted me to pick her up so I leaned over and picked her up but lost my balance. I would have fallen full force on top of her but very quickly turned her over as I smashed my left shoulder on to the ground. She was not hurt at all. I am so glad that I did not hurt her.
I don't think I broke any bones just am very swollen and it hurts. I can raise my hand over my head so I know that my rotator cuff is good. It just hurts alot. I had a very hard time getting my soft sweater off...how am I going to get dressed????
I am angry with myself..I know it was an accident but still feel like it could have been prevented.
sigh
Just what I need....
I wonder how I will be in the morning....:(

Ouch

Dear Bizi,
You might be a little black and blue in the morning.

You do not need to be angry with yourself. Show the same compassion to yourself that you would with anyone else. :circlelove:
Do you have pain relievers? Anything that I help you sleep?

I hope you will be ok. Maybe take it very easy on Sunday. If you still hurt on Monday, you can call you mdoc.

Dear Bizi

silly girl it is not your fault at all!!!!!:hug::hug: no, take that back, unhug unhug unhug, as pats other (painless) shoulder gently to say "it's gonna be ok."

maybe you are having a bit of what Steve has coined "false guilt?"

glad you haven't lost movement - if you have, then go get your shoulder seen. you were a sort of heroine protecting Margo like that. if she had fallen from being held who knows she could have had a serious injury - hit her head or jabbed an eye or whatever.

admittedly i did something similar - i was a kid - but with lower stakes... was carrying an african violet. tripped in a parking lot, held the violet up like a torch - it came out pristine... i came out black and blue.

and if indeed we are silly, then it is a good, kind-hearted kind of silly - nothing wrong in that i say!!! :) hope you heal up quick. sending good vibes :circlelove:

Bizi, I'm so glad the little girl didn't get hurt, but I'm sorry you did!

Maybe try some heat/ice or compression?

I hope it heals soon!

Dmom3005 02-20-2011 04:13 PM

Bizi
Its going to hurt for a while. But it will get better. So just take time
and use the heat and ice as you need to. Also the pain relief.

Also if you need to go to PT.

i had a major breakthru last week....the difference between accident and blame...for myself i used to always use blame...sounds as if you have the same problem....it was an accident and I am glad you thought so quickly
you didn't hurt the little girl and maybe you helped yourself too
write soon so we know how you are

If you can handle aspirin that is great anti inflammatory, Or at least 3 Advil liquid gels. A pull strain sometimes just needs time. the best thing is if the rotator cuff is not damaged, I hope it calms down soon. Thank goodness nothing seemed broke.
Hugs
Di

bizi 02-20-2011 08:44 PM

thank you for your kind words.
I spoke with my PT friend and she gave me great advice.
getting dressed is a challenge....driving with one arm is easy to do but backing up is turn around.
robin taught me how to make an ice pack using rubbing alcohol and 3 parts water, freeze for 4 hours. it is great!
the alcohol keeps it from being hard so it is like slush and conforms to my shoulder.
i did evenually make it to the gym and sat in the hot tub for 10 minutes massaging my shoulder, that felt good.
she said heat massage the ice.
so that is what i am doing.
Great. just something else to obcess about!
bizi

DiMarie 02-20-2011 11:47 PM

Oh Bizi I remember making slushy Ice.. They are really super cold too. A back up to conform is a bag of peas. Just label them so not to actually use them.
Hope all calms down to a bearable level soon.

Dear Bizi

I'm sorry that you hurt your shoulder. It sounds like something that was beyond your control, and you shouldn't blame yourself. I hope that you feel better soon. BF:hug::hug::hug:

thank you for your kind words of support.

OhKay 02-21-2011 12:46 PM

I'm sure you remember it's easier to dress that arm first....

I'm glad that you are finding some relief, but here's hoping you won't be dealing with this pain for long.

bizi 02-21-2011 06:53 PM

and undress it last! jeff taught me how to take my bra off!
lol

I was able to drive and see a couple of clients.
thankfully able to work albeit slowly and carefully.

Bizi,
You do sound overwhelmed. Find somethings you do that relax you and that make you feel that you have control over what you are doing.

I'm sorry about your kittie.
I belive that the mdoc and the PT are goign to help you with your shoulder. Be patient. You have great recovery powers (might not be able to recover in one night but you can recover).
'Sending good vibes.

well, i am typing with one hand.... i have a sling on...i fractured my clavical bone. my collar bone.
see him again in 2 weeks, he said it could take up to 6 weeks to heal...
great... very sad and i was scared going into the appointment, i cried beforehand at home on the phone with jeff.
i am relieved...it is hard doing things with only one arm...but maybe i will heal quickly? any one know of supplements to speed up healing?
i will research this. once the bone heals then we work on the therapy.
bizi

OhKay 02-23-2011 05:35 PM

I'm sorry about the kitty and your clavicle! It's no wonder that you are in so much pain.
It's such a delicate bone... If you can, try to focus on the bone healing properly, rather than quickly :hug::hug:
I can't think of anything other than immobilization, calcium, and abstinence from carbonation to accelerate the healing process.
No PT until after the bone has healed, I hope?

I'm thinking of you Bizi and wish you and your kitty quick recoveries.

mymorgy 02-23-2011 05:39 PM

i am so sorry bizi and so sorry about your kitty cat...hope they don't find anything....arnica montana 30 is a homeopathic remedy for pain and i think it works....i forgot the remedies for bone pain but i used some when morgy had osteosarcoma.....i don't know if you believe in homeopathy

Bizi,

'Sorry that you are having to go through this.
Be gentle on yourself.

Here is mayo clinic. Talk to your doc to see if any of this applies to your situation.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bro...ents-and-drugs

Your balanced diet will help you heal.

Be patient.

bizi 02-23-2011 09:23 PM

thank you,
it is a distal break so it should heal easily.
i was told to eat alot of fresh pinapple!
i was taking a calcium supplement but not the reccomended 1000mg....
i was taking 630mg once daily but sometimes twice, but not consistantly....
i should ask about a bone density test since osteoporosis runs in my family.
bizi

Mari 02-24-2011 06:09 AM

Dear Bizi,
Yes, ask about a bone density test.

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02012...lammatory-diet
You are already on an anti-inflammatory diet. Here is another one.

M.

Dmom3005 02-24-2011 09:33 AM

You might also ask if macnesium would help. I didn't spell it right but it might help. Please try to take it easy for at least the two weeks. This is something that takes time. But usually heals well.

Oh boy Bizi, I'm so sorry ot hear you got a fracture, that stinks....And the kitty, it sounds like so much is happening all at once! Hang in there, you're going to get through it all. :(

bizi 02-24-2011 09:37 PM

i worked for hours trying to cancel appointments , move people around.
i hired a woman to help me after this first 2 week break, she will assist me. so glad to have found her, friend of a friend....it was fate!
i got alot done but have alot more to do.

Guessing you are helping her too.

Glad you found someone to help you Bizi that's awesome! I really hope the time passes quickly. Hang in there, you ARE amazing, keep on getting things done that you need to and try to rest as much as you can. Healing broken bones is hard work. :grouphug:

bizi 02-26-2011 02:29 PM

i am not in much pain am only taking tylenol and a muscle relaxer at night.
they did schedule a bone density test the same day that I see him again in 10 days....so we shall see.
i hate the sling and can't type very well with it on...i am wondering if I really need to wear it at home????I am doing alittle bit of rom exercises...don't want my shoulder to freeze up on me.
jeff is mad that I won't take the mobic, which is a nsaid and used to treat arthritis patients, my mdoc prescribed this before we knew I had a break, then the ortho did not prescribe anything else.
i am a terrible patient.
bizi

waves 02-26-2011 05:43 PM

well if tylenol is covering your pain and you are also taking a muscle relaxer not sure i see the need for the mobic, i vote with you.

but if the pain is too strong for the tylenol then i vote for the mobic.

~ waves ~ that is if i get a vote...

DiMarie 02-26-2011 05:53 PM

I tend to agree too, if it is covering the pain. But if anything changes a bit I don't know mobic, but if it is a nsaid, that calms down inflammation and when nerves can be involved or muscle pain, the nsaid helps that better then Tylenol. Just keep on top of the pain.

Feel better soon,
di

Dmom3005 02-26-2011 09:32 PM

Bizi

About the sling. When my grandson broke his collarbone, last year or
year before. Now I realize the age difference.

At 3 weeks of the break they told us he didn't need the sling at all
unless he was going to be doing a lot of running type things.

My son and daughter-in-law used it some outside.

Donna:grouphug:

waves 02-27-2011 07:06 PM

the sling

Dear Bizi

i would wear the sling as much as you can tolerate for now. children's bones set more quickly i think....

do you have a follow up exam (when)?

i'd really like for you to ask the doc about the sling and activities you want not to wear it for. i think the collarbone is implicated in a fair range of movements but i don't really know. i just think even for, say, typing, the shoulder may not seem involved but it is when you reach across keyboard or move mouse...

we want your collarbone to heal up nice and smooth like new.
:)

~ waves ~

Mari 02-27-2011 07:54 PM

Bizi,
Call the mdoc on Monday. Check about the treatment plan about the
~sling
~activities
~meds

It is good to get clarification.

Dealing with a broken bone is just as important as dealing with BP. Do what you are supposed to do to get well.

M.

OhKay 02-28-2011 11:48 AM

I agree with all the great advice above :grouphug:

I really hope this bone heals quickly and well for you!

bizi 03-09-2011 07:53 PM

hi, I just got back from my ortho appointment. He said I was healing and that the bone density test showed some concern. I was in the yellow zone(-1.75), so I need to be taking twice the amount of calcium, I knew that it was not enough. So I will do better and to retest in a year.
I am to do some range of motion exercises......see him again in 2 weeks. So good news overall. I forgot to ask about vit d level....
I put a call into my pdocs office to let her know that I had increased my geodon a week and that I would be needing a refill. To let her know that I had become manic and was now feeling better. The office called back saying they had called in a refill for me. So that is good too.

OhKay 03-10-2011 02:25 PM

Bizi, I'm glad your collar bone is on the mend! Also glad the ortho approved your ROM exercises. Did he mention doing anything other than the extra Ca d/t your bone density results?
And, yea! Your mood is improved! That goes a long way! :)

bizi 03-10-2011 03:16 PM

no kay all he said was to increase my calcium intake.
our company left today so glad to have the house back. then another guest Cain (he is from ruston, where I fell and hurt myself 3 weeks ago)comes friday night to perform a classical guitar concert, hubbys good friend, they always stay up real late and drink too much....he is very intense, I might just have to go to bed early.
Some of my red tulips that I planted in the fall have come up and are blooming!they are the double blooms. So nice to see them. It is warmer today 60's with pretty blue skies. I should wash my car. I start working again on monday...with shantelle assisting me...hopefully she will work out.
need to plan some dinner for tonight....
my brain is working better....
