scar tissue question

do cortisone shots actually help break up scar tissue or is that a myth?

i read on docs sites it does but i dont trust docs to know anything lol

boytos 04-12-2011 10:37 AM

No, only in the acute phase. But pentoxifylline + tocopherol for 6 months - 2 years can :)

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 07:35 AM

ive been taking vit e oil for a few months but not the other

how do people even know they have scar tissue without being cut open

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 09:33 AM

actually i dont think it would be a good idea for me to take too many blood thinners i already have very low bp, in the mornings. a few years ago i actually fainted.

boytos 04-13-2011 10:17 AM

it's a little blood thinner.

Because TOS is know since antiquity

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 12:35 PM

what do you mean?

i have tos on both sides and have had it pre what-i-think-is scar tissue

Jomar 04-13-2011 12:47 PM

one of the other threads mentioned scar tissue (but not in the title) and I was hoping some that had testing, or a dr say they had it for sure, would reply but I don't think anyone has yet.
This might be a better thread to get specific replies on scar tissue..

I wondered too if there is a MRI or MRA that would show it, or some other test or if it had to be seen/found for sure during surgery??

And I wonder if scar tissue is something totally separate from adhesions and /or sticky tissues..?

Maybe?? the adhesions & sticky tissues can possible become scar tissue over a long period of time? And if they are not reversed by proper therapy and treatment??

Good question...

On cortisone shots -
I'm pretty sure multiple cortisone shots in the same place can dissolve health tissue/tendons. I think 3 in the same place is the limit and has to be some time in between those shots.

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 12:51 PM

yeah i guess 1 cortisone shot probably wouldnt even dissolve scar tissue

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 12:56 PM

i am confused

scar tissue vs sticky tissues (vs inflammation for me) and when they interact

sticky tissues i think of as putting heat on to loosen. (i cannot do this in the area that i suspect is scar tissue or inflammation..whatever it is..)

i think of scar tissue more of a postsurgery injury type phenomena. and if that develops into chronic pain then sticky tissues.:confused:

For tos, in short :

Trauma or repetitive trauma - >Neurogenic inflammation - > fibrosis and hypertrophy

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 02:43 PM

is neurogenic inflammation actually warm?

or does it have to be "burning" and intense needly feeling

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 02:47 PM

also i wonder if botox would help with mild scar tissue

No.

And No.

Botox as I understand it's use for TOS , is to numb or deaden the offending muscles that are in continuous spasm, which may be due to the nerves telling the muscles to spasm.
Just as it deadens the muscles that can form the wrinkles in the face = botox deadens & stops the muscle from moving and causing wrinkles.

somebody correct me if I have it wrong.
I haven't researched in depth on it , just the reading from previous posters mentioning it.

You might do a forum wide search on botox , Novocaine/marcaine, injections and so on to find those old posts.

I don't think they have been mentioned for over a year or so, maybe even longer back..most of those members don't post much anymore.

I'm a little confused on what you mean when you mention inflammation?

I could be totally off, but to me inflammation seems like it would be more of the acute stage or a bad flare up, and then would settle into more of the chronic TOS stuff.

But there are some books about anti inflammation diet and how changing to this diet can reverse some chronic pain, like fibromyalgia and others.

So there could be underlying chronic inflammations going on.

Inflammation -> fibrosis -> more inflammation

mspennyloafer 04-13-2011 07:12 PM

thanks ladies n gents

when i say *inflammation* the problem is i have EDS and our bodies are extra sensitive for whatever reason. my right shoulder joint/bursa is a good example of this...so what im saying def doesn't apply to the avg person.

all i know is since doing that ****ing neck stretch in oct. i cycle through these phases where my trap meets my neck, the WARM stage. flector patches help with this but they are too expensive, and the hardened spasmy stage. then back to warm. back and forth with no give. there's a bulge there that gets warm, im assuming it my trap just constantly turned *on* to protect my rib/bp whatever.

i will look into anti inflam diet. i actually went to the grocery store looking for tumeric tea. sounds gross but im open to anything, lol

boytos 04-14-2011 12:21 AM

look for anticytokine diet.

I know I have scar tissue. I feel it everyday in my throat. The sensation makes me want to vomit. It can be felt by a PT too, but I'll flare if it's touched as it must be adhered to a nerve (s). He is trying to attack it from other angles to break it up. There was no trauma involved.

I've had 4 MRI's plus the MRN for TOS and no scar tissue is visible or noted on the report.

Do you have surgery to remove the scar tissue and possibly create more scar tissue?

mspennyloafer 04-18-2011 07:09 PM

let me know if your pt finds a way

i think i have a milder version of this. also these mris sound so POINTLESS. it almost makes me want to cancel my appt.

mspennyloafer 04-18-2011 07:11 PM

i popped a lodeine of my friends
and it made a big difference, so i definitely have some chronic inflamation going on. around my trap and ribcage, like i thought

I think a members daughter had necrotic tissue removed during her surgery and scar tissue regrew after, and I believe she even had to have a second procedure with a special technique of wrapping the nerve to try to stop the adhesions from reforming.
So some do seem to develop more of it than others.
