I want an adult trike.

ok, I give up. After a trail again on my bike, and yes another crash before I got out of the silly driveway, it has become clear to me that I cannot balance on this thing anymore. I have decided rather than miss out on my evening rides with the hubby this year like I did last year, I will try to get a trike.

Will the MS society help me? Where do I start? I hear they are hard to peddle, is that true? Should I consider a motor assisted one? How do I know what I am looking for? I saw the lateral recumbant bikes, but they seem really low to the ground, and I wont be very visable will i? many questions!

Do you have experience? knowledge? advice? hit me. I am tired of wobbling my way to the mail box and ending up on my bum bum. :o

Erin524 04-19-2011 08:00 PM

I dont know if the MS society will help, but I googled adult tricycles. Found a few that look neat. If I had a place to store one, I'd get one of these.

Then there's this one. (it folds!) I still wouldnt have anywhere to store this one tho...

tkrik 04-19-2011 08:10 PM

I found one in the middle of nowhere. It was just sitting out in a ditch. We were on our way to go camping a couple of years ago. DBF said if it was still there on our way back, we would pick it up. It's old and beat up but it works. I still need to do some work on it and plan to put a motor on it. With a motor, if I get tired, at least I can switch to the motor and get home.

They are expensive and I don't know if there is any assistance out there to pay for them. In fact, I doubt there is. But, it is worth checking in to.

Trikes

Well......if you itemize your taxes and you can get your doctor to give you a note saying you need exercise, then its tax deductible. I just saw this on Jay Leno where a tax guy took peoples questions about taxes. One question was about a swimming pool being tax deductible because the guys doc said he needed exercise.....even the chemicals and upkeep were deductible!

Its so funny you mention a trike.....told my hubby today (who just bought a bike) that I'd like to get a bike but I would need training wheels.;)
I got on a 2 person trike one time in Florida, and I thought it was hard to steer....but that was with another person on the back and I think it just takes a little getting used to. I suppose if you bought one and didn't like it, it wouldn't be hard to sell.

Erin524 04-19-2011 10:57 PM

If I ever plan on getting one of those (they are cool looking) if I didnt like the bike, I know my sister would take it.

I kind of miss riding bikes. I was one of those crazy teenagers on a bike tho. I used to ride my bike, standing up, in the dark on a street full of potholes. (I memorized where most of them were) Sometimes with no hands. Now I cant ride a bike unless it's stationary and recumbent style.

My balance is out the window on a normal day, and if I'm in the dark, forget about it. I'm on the floor or hugging a wall. I dont think I've ridden a bike that actually goes somewhere since about 1989. I might have ridden my bike for a minute or two after we moved to this house, but the tires were flat, so I didnt go far.

I gave my bike (a Trek mountain bike, think it had 7 speeds) away to my niece. She gave it to my sister because she wasnt tall enough for it yet. She should fit it just fine now.

Erin! you are the BEST! I never thought of looking at Wal-Mart! I found the exact bike I wanted in the color I wanted. most of the Amazon bikes were blue and add at least $100 to the price! Wahooo! This is what I got.

Spoke to the MD yesterday, he is willing to write a prescription for it, so its tax deductible. Wahoo! it will work out to be free.

That's a fantastic price! I am so glad it worked out for you and I hope you enjoy your new trike.

wkikta 04-20-2011 10:01 AM

They are very popular in many of the Retirement Communities in Florida. No hills there. They are much harder to get used to turning since they don't lean to the side like a bicycle, but are not hard once you are used to them. I would get the 3 Speed one, much less effort to pedal.

Kitty 04-20-2011 10:15 AM

Let us know how you like it. You'll get lots of fun use out of it with summer coming up. I'm happy you got a treat! :)

TXBatman 04-20-2011 11:30 AM

We have a lady in our "Because We Can" group of cyclists with MS who rides a recumbent trike in the MS150. We just finished this weekend and she made it all 65 miles or so of the shorter route on day one. I don't think she rode on day two due to the heat and super low humidity dehydrating her, but she is a strong rider and does well. She said Ampyra has really helped her pedal cadence and her walking. She uses one of those little orange flags on a flexible pole to make sure she is visible to drivers.

Erin524 04-20-2011 11:33 AM

Dej, I really like that one! I like the color.

I wish I had the space to store a bike, I'd get one. I bet my dad would like one. I just dont know where I'd keep one that it wouldnt get stolen. Our garage has a minivan, a small SUV and my mom's electric scooter in it. There's no room. We have a glassed in patio room, but there's no lock, anyone could go in there and take off with it. (plus, I dont think I could get a trike thru the door)

SallyC 04-20-2011 11:53 AM

Look out Tex, Dej will be entering all the bike-a-thons, now..:)

You go girl..

TXBatman 04-20-2011 12:17 PM

I'd love to see her out there SallyC. Nothing in the world is more inspiring to me when I ride than to see somebody who I know is having a harder time than I am still slugging it out and getting it done. I tell myself if they can do it and keep going, then I have no excuse whatsoever not to keep going myself. When I see the Wounded Warrior Project riders who have lost legs or who were paralyzed by injuries out there riding hand cranked bicycles, I always slow down and thank them for their service and let them know that they are my heroes.

viseeu 04-20-2011 12:35 PM

wow! Dejibo is going to be a biker chik! and... I notice it has a really big basket Dej so when you are "feeling your oats" you can ride it to the local grocery store or to the pharma to pick things up http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...ghsideways.gif
Now that would be some exercise!

Walmart Trike

Whoo Hoooooo! Think I'll get one too~~!:D The purple is awesome!!

Dejibo 04-20-2011 02:49 PM

I have been like a little kid all day. I really miss getting out there, but I am not safe on my bike. I have an expensive mountain bike that I paid way too much money for, and then only got a year out of it. I kept falling and couldnt figure it out. That led to the anxiety and the over corrections. What I really miss is my motor cycle, but I would really not be safe on that thing anymore.

I thought I was going to have to settle for the blue one. I was ok with the red one, but thrilled to bits with purple! Big ol basket for Jack the cat. I will have to get a nice lock for it, since things disappear round this town.

Wahoo! im gonna be back on the streets! perhaps I will ride in the MS bike thing coming up. ding ding ding! I need a bell now.

cally 04-20-2011 03:30 PM

HEY there are alot of people riding tryks in my nieghborhood they put there dogs in baskets i do live in a retirement community here in florida although not old enough most my neighbors have golf carts they run around in up to the pool stuff wish i did to exspensive anyhoot they say those bikes are hard to steer be careful:D

Erin524 04-20-2011 09:09 PM

I did the same thing with my old bike. My dad gave it to me for my birthday/high school graduation. (got the bike in 1989) I only used it for less than a year. But, that wasnt because of the MS, it's because I was a little disappointed that I didnt get a cheap, crappy car. Instead I got a nice, brand new bike. (cost $400!)

It's not like the bike went to waste tho. My dad loved riding it, even if it was a "girls" bike. We just werent in a part of town that was bicycle friendly when I got that bike. My uncle snapped the kickstand off of it right after I got it, he sat on the bike and the kickstand snapped in half from the weight. My dad got shot while riding the bike once. (kids with a paintball gun shot him as they drove past him. He thought he was really shot for a few minutes. This is one of the reasons our old neighborhood wasnt bike friendly)

By the time we moved to an area that was more bike friendly, I was having problems with my balance, just had no idea it was MS causing it.

Now I kind of wish I had one of these trikes. Just no where for me to put it where it either wouldnt get stolen, or where the neighbors wont kvetch about it being locked up outside all the time.

Dej, now you need to get some purple and pink tassels for the handlebars, a bell, a handlebar flashlight, and some of those red blinkers to put on the spokes of the wheels.

I was going to suggest some racing decals that look like flames for the frame of the bike, but thought that would be a bit much.

Dejibo 04-21-2011 08:20 AM

I am going to order a seat with a back on it. A small motor to help me go up hill. There is a nasty hill that stands between me and getting back home after going down town here, unless I want to go far down a dirt road. I have an LED light for my current one, and a gel wide bottom seat. Tassles! what a great idea! I will need reflectors and maybe a handicap sign for the back of the basket or a traffic triangle so folks wont try to bump me. Im so happy to have this thing coming! I am not worried about tight turns, as we live out in the woods and things are straight to it style roads.

What else would you get for it?

Erin524 04-21-2011 10:11 AM

satellite radio, or at least a radio in the basket. (no headphones, headphones are illegal to wear when operating a vehicle in some states)

how about an air horn? (yes, I know I'm a bit ridiculous in the suggestions)

Dejibo 04-21-2011 02:46 PM

I got a speaker kit to go on the handle bars that will allow me to plug in my IPOD, and I got a light, and a brake light. I got a satchel that attaches to the basket so I can put in little things like sunglasses or my wallet without it bouncing around. it has a lock pad on it. I also got a pick proof, drill proof lock. Got to the front of the store, and DH whipped out coupons! it is in his fav sporting goods store, and I am always sticking coupons at him when I find them. it shaved a good 40% off my purchase. I got an ipod holder that will attach to the bike or my arm if I choose. Im already decorating the thing and it hasnt arrived yet!

I really have missed being outside.

viseeu 04-21-2011 02:52 PM

I'm glad to see you getting excited about your new bike/trike Dej! Maybe you can even take lil Jackie boy for a short ride :D

You are too cute!:p I'm glad you are getting excited about all of this. Did you get a bell too? Or a horn?:D

I do hope you enjoy your new trike. Once you get it, you'll have to let us know how it goes.

Dejibo 04-22-2011 12:09 PM

i have not found a bell I like yet. the only one I saw was the typical pull and when you release it dings. it was a hard lever to pull. perhaps I will find a horn or something later.

I just got the notice that it shipped this morning, and I can expect it between 4/22 and 4/27 to arrive. Shipping was only $2.97 not bad! im ready! come on bike! I really do miss being able to be outdoors with everyone else. nothing makes you feel more crippled than others running circles around you.

Erin524 04-22-2011 01:23 PM

$2.97 for shipping a bike!! that's a great price! It wont buy the delivery truck even a gallon of gas tho. Good timing on buying the bike. I bet Walmart will be upping the costs for shipping soon.

Dejibo 04-27-2011 02:21 PM

Well, the Thunderstorms and other tornado watches and so on have delayed the trike. FedEx said it "may" be here tomorrow. Im sorry folks are having bad weather, but I want my bike! Oh well, its a running joke at this point. Maybe tomorrow. At least I can stop looking out the window for it today.

Im ready! I have all the toys to attach to it. You know it has to be assembled when it gets here. watch what a baby I become while DH tries to scrape his knuckles on the fenders! HA!

Kitty 04-27-2011 03:19 PM

We want a video of you and your first ride on this trike! :D Hey, maybe MIL can have a ride on it, too. ;)

Erin524 04-27-2011 03:28 PM

I know how you feel on waiting for something to be delivered.

Hopefully your bike gets to you soon and you can start racing little kids on their Schwinns.

Dejibo 04-28-2011 03:20 PM

Its HERE! Its HERE!

Of course its raining to beat the band, and I have half a thumb, and now DH isnt in the mood to haggle with me over this bike, because we have company coming in ONE hour to meet his momma, so Im being a big ol baby! I want my bike! ding ding!
