Guilty Dinner Tonight

My neighbors brought me back some lobsters from their trip to Maine as payment for taking care of their dogs (which was NOT an easy task). One little thing....

They are fresh. And by fresh I mean the little critters are still alive. Yes, I know lobsters are best that way. But like the cornish hens it makes me feel guilty. You see, I can eat my weight in crabs, but I don't cook them because it makes me feel guilty.

So tonight I get a guilty meal. I know, it's silly. But the idea of dropping living things into boiling waer just seems wrong.

But it tastes so good.

Dejibo 04-23-2011 12:32 PM

I have that same feeling each time I drop the critters into the pot to boil. I stamp my feet, squint my eyes, and ask for forgiveness. Now I am a hunter and can kill a deer, and process it for the dinner table, but lobsters freak me out. I always ask the store to steam them for me. YUM!

legzzalot 04-23-2011 02:41 PM

Yeah I have no problem processing deer after they are dead, but I can't shoot them. Its just weird to me, I know a few people who deserve the boiling water death and I would not think twice about pushing them in, but I feel bad about a stinkin' lobster.

Erin524 04-23-2011 04:20 PM

Mmmm! Lobster! (with garlic butter???)

I really miss lobster. I'm allergic    ~crying~

Last time I had lobster (a whole one, with garlic butter) I had a reaction with hives, and coughing. Now I have to be careful at buffets where seafood is served, and I cant eat at restaurants that serve mostly seafood (too big of a chance of cross contamination.

I never did get the allergy confirmed by a doctor, but everytime I've had shrimp or lobster, I get hives. I've decided to stay away from my beloved lobster. (my dad used to make the best linguine and clam sauce with lobster and crab meat. I miss that)

Dont feel bad about boiling the lobsters. They gave their lives to give you a tasty, tasty meal. The whole circle of life thing. Enjoy them while they're still kicking...err...fresh.

I'll be sitting in the corner, crying because I cant eat lobster anymore. :(

Koala77 04-23-2011 05:43 PM

I also ate lobster for dinner on Friday. ...yum!

We don't drop our lobsters into boiling water kicking about, instead we sedate them in the deep freezer before drowning them in fresh water. My father used to cook them live and kicking, but I think the way we do it now is much more humane.

SallyC 04-23-2011 07:04 PM

Now that's what I call fresh frozen...ouch.:D

Erin524 04-23-2011 07:55 PM

I'm starving (well, the jelly beans I've been eating are helping that) but now I'm craving lobster and garlic butter.

Getting depressed now. :(

I wanna have lobster too!

legzzalot 04-23-2011 08:00 PM

Well, I did it. Sam 2 lobster 0! OK the first one I felt guilty about but the second one attacked me so I didn't mind killing that one too much.

Besides, he was quite tasty with his lemon/garlic butter sauce.

Even better with the red lobster garlic cheese rolls and the ceasar salad. :D

DD didn't care much for them.

DH2B apparently never had a whole lobster before, he actually went out to the garage and got a pair of pliers for the claws. Of course I kind of made him look like a wimp when I grabbed a butter knifeand cracked them open:D

Erin524 04-23-2011 08:03 PM

I am so jealous right now.

and starving.

legzzalot 04-23-2011 08:15 PM

Sorry Erin. I tried to eat extra for ya. LOL

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think I am cooking tomorrow. Might be a pizza kind of night.

Erin524 04-23-2011 10:29 PM

Did the lobster that attacked you scream a lot as you were getting your revenge?

Getting fresh lobsters is a good deal for watching some dogs. Lobster is expensive (at least where I am in Landlocked Nebraska.)

When I watch my aunt's dog, I usually only get a pan of brownies (that immediately gets eaten by someone else before I can get to it)

I just got back from getting Chinese food. It wasnt that impressive. I should have gotten a pizza.

I did go to Target in search of Jelly Bellies, but all I could find was an empty shelf with a label that said "Jelly Beans", and the remnants of a damaged package and a bunch of orphaned loose jelly beans. :( Those poor jelly beans...never to be eaten...at least not by humans. (note to self, dont buy holiday candy 2 weeks before any given holiday, you'll just end up needing more holiday candy)

Managed to get some more M&M's. I guess I have to fulfill my need for Peeps for the After-holiday sales.

My b-in-law is making lamb tomorrow. I like lamb, but unfortunately, not my b-in-law's cooking so much. We were planning to go to an Italian restaurant for dinner, but my sibling decided she wanted b-in-law to cook. At my house. Then she asked my dad today "you're reimbursing us for buying the food...right?". (change our plans, and then expect us to pay for it anyways? chutzpah!)

So, we get a mess in our house, and no tasty mostacholi and no fried ravioli for me...and most importantly....no steak! (I'd been planning that for months. argh!) If we'd stuck to the plan, my dad would have bought them dinner and we wouldnt have to have a mess in my currently clean house.

and I just realized...no spumoni! ~crying~

Guess where I'm going to go for dinner on my birthday next month...and they're not invited. I really wanted to eat a nice steak tomorrow that had only been recently mooing in a pasture somewhere, especially since I cant have fresh (or at least recently alive) lobster any more.

legzzalot 04-24-2011 05:57 AM

Wow the nerve. How do you invite yourself over to cook and then ask to be reimbursed?? Dad should have smacked her in the head. I did end up throwing a biscuit at dh2bs head last night. After tweaking the recipe and making my third batch of biscuits from scratch he told me he didn't care much for them. The first batch was missing something and my dd and the neighbors kids devoured the second batch.

legzzalot 04-24-2011 06:09 AM

MMMMMMMMM fried ravioli..... Haven't had that in a very long time.

Dejibo 04-24-2011 07:07 AM

Mmmm...Maine Lobstah! I live very close to Maine, so lobster is plentiful. Its not cheap, but sometimes the store sells them for $2 a pound. They only go up to 2 pounds on sale days, but you can ask them to steam them for you, and drag a bag full home and freeze them. I love the tails and claws and a neighbor loves the bodies, so we trade alot. I find bags of tails on my door handle and he gets dead bodies (dang that sounded bad, yes?)

Funny thing is that I am allergic to shrimp, but can eat lobster.

Never heard of it!!! Sounds good and fattening. I've had fried peroggis...yummmm!

Erin524 04-24-2011 03:04 PM

well, I just got called up there for dinner, but every single chair at the table is filled, and I really dont like crowds of people (8 people is a crowd to me) and they dont really get that.

So, I stood there watching everyone start to get food. My dad had said he was going to sit in the other room with me (open concept house, so technically, we're all in the same room. There's just furniture separating us) and he was sitting at the table with everyone. So, I'd be stuck sitting alone at the table in the other room.

After a few minutes, I just decided to come downstairs and wander around on the internet here. They havent noticed yet that I left the room.

At the risk of sounding like I'm kvetching (complaining) I'd rather have gone out to eat at a restaurant. I looked at the food they made, and it doesnt look good to me. (I havent felt good for a few days. Stomach issues) about the only thing that looks good, and that I really like is the asparagus, and I'm pretty sure there wasnt enough for everyone.

I just dont want to be around people right now. (not depressed, but irritated that no one listens to me since my sister moved back)

I think I'm just annoyed that I had made plans two months ago, getting reservations for where we go every year, and then at the last second, boom. My plans are just tossed. The fact that they had the chutzpah to ask my dad if he was going to pay them for the food they brought just irritated me. Yeah, they dont have a lot of money, but if you change the dinner plans of the person who invited you, then you shouldnt expect them to have to pay for it now.

Reason I wanted to go to the restaurant (other than the fact that they have fried ravioli) is that it's neutral ground.

Last spring when my sister moved back, they had the wonderful timing to show up a week before a HUGE MS flare. A very painful MS flare that lasted like 3 months (spasticity city. It REALLY HURT!), and then they moved in and didnt leave for two months. Anyone else here like to hide when they dont feel good. Kind of hard to do that with people staying with you. I felt like crap the whole time, and all they did was make constant noise, and weird smells and I couldnt relax.

I'm having another flare, and I'm uncomfortable. The whole going out to eat thing was my way of having something exciting to do and go to. So, I'm sort of disappointed that they just changed my plans without asking me. wow...I guess I am kvetching. (btw, I've been down here 20 mins, no one has noticed yet that I'm not up there)

Dejibo 04-24-2011 04:28 PM

aww Erin  hugs to you. my family makes me wanna hide in the basement too. I hope they clear out soon and you can get back to your normal routine.

Kitty 04-24-2011 04:32 PM

Well, Erin, sometimes parents just choose to ignore the irritating behavior of their children. Sometimes it's the lesser of two evils. Your Dad probably is just trying to "grin and bear it" for the day. Maybe you could go out somewhere without the rest of the family. If you're not up to crowds today solitude might be refreshing.

Erin524 04-24-2011 05:50 PM

I also had another relative (dad's younger sister) here that doesnt believe that I have MS. (why is there always one that thinks MSers are making this stuff up?) I was really uncomfortable being around her today. (wobbly, one eye is blurry today...which is new, and I'm just not feeling good) I didnt feel like being around her that much today. She would have been ok if we'd gone to the restaurant (the whole neutral territory thing). I could have not invited her, but once you start doing something more than a couple of times, like inviting her to dinner every easter, then it becomes a "tradition" and they start to expect to be invited.

I found out the reason my sister changed my plans on me. It's because the kids cant sit still in a restaurant. (gonna have to learn sometime, they're old enough) They did fine at thanksgiving. Take their nintendos, all the other kids in restaurants now have either a cellphone in their hands, or a nintendo.

I still havent had anything to eat.

No one said anything to me about leaving the room during dinner, but it was good that I was downstairs when I was. Chatted with my boyfriend for a bit, which I hadnt done for a few days. Made me feel a little better. (someday he and I might get to spend a holiday together in the same zip code, instead of just on instant messenger. Someday...) He was doing homework and I think he didnt mind the break. Sounded like his homework was making him a little nuts.

legzzalot 04-24-2011 05:59 PM

Hey Erin come on over to my house. The man is grilling.

Erin524 04-25-2011 12:20 AM

Steak? Grilling means steak, or other beef-type foods, right? :p

Just found out my mom, and my dad's sister both didnt like the dinner tonight. My mom wanted steak (me too) and my dad's sister was mad that we didnt take her out to the restaurant that we'd originally planned on going to. My mom at least ate some. My dad's sister ate a small bit, then ate some bread. Now I understand her snarky comment about all the wonderful bread she ate. Out of the three of us, I'm probably the only one that actually likes lamb, but it just didnt look that good to me.

So, at least I wasnt alone in the disappointment. Explains why all three of us were grumpy. I bet my dad's sister stopped somewhere on her way home for something to eat. I eventually went and grabbed my Kindle and went to get a pizza. Sat in the pizza place for 2hrs, reading a Zorro novel and eating pizza and garlic bread. (I feel better now)

legzzalot 04-25-2011 09:47 AM

Steak and ribs. I love it when he decides to cook...even though I somehow ended upcooking all of the nonmeat sides.

legzzalot 04-25-2011 09:48 AM

And of course I have a sinkful of dishes and a mess in the kitchen to clean up. TO go along with the pink flowers that now cover my floor

Erin524 04-25-2011 02:30 PM

Pink flowers on the floor? What are pink flowers doing on the floor?

My boyfriend has a friend who does a big rib bbq every year when Ribfest comes to town. Says he'd rather spend his money on a ton of freshly butchered meat and cook for two days than go to Ribfest and get ripped off for overcooked, overpriced and underflavored ribs. (his friend's hobby is cooking, and he also comes from farm country and apparently has connections to some really excellent cows whenever he's in the mood to cook)

Boyfriend's friend invited me once to come over when they were doing their rib feast...omg...it was good!
