Nerve long thoracic nerve (from roots of brachial plexus C5, 6, 7)

also if you strengthen this is it gonna push your ribs down some

boytos 04-29-2011 08:02 AM

maybe ... :grouphug:

mspennyloafer 04-29-2011 08:42 AM

i am HOPING

it sets off a chain reaction strengthening serratus anterior>>less winging>>more stability in back>>less reliance on neck>>rib lowering a little

i just cant get to the strengthening part

my pts said that my neck holds up my entire body, no wonder its mad

anyone with (medial) winged scapulas aka weak serratus anterior. seriously watch this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfyN1F0HCBk

it summarizes exactly why we cant do standard resistance band, shoulder strengthening exercises. it looks very silly but the exercise is spot-on

I have been doing a very effective strengthing excersize for serratus anterior, you basically rest both of your elbows and forearms vertically against a wall and sldie them up and down slowly.

It burns but since i have been doing this all my winged scapula sympotms have gone and serratus sticks out like a massive paw print.

not for S.A. but lower trap, i might try.. it doesnt look like it can hurt me. im pretty good at gauging that now

mspennyloafer 02-20-2012 11:04 AM

this muscle is so important! it unloads your neck

mine does not work sitll

part of the reason strengthening it was causing burning was because of mg deficiency and i was using my lats
downwardly rotated scapula leads to tos

after 7weeks of doing serratus anterior push ups about 5 times a day in sets of 15 - 20 , i am have started seeing the best results that i have in over a year a and half.

My scaps are both alot more noticably closer to my rob cage and they are not winging.

I have returned to the gym and i am lifting pretty heavy and symptoms have been down to zero 0.25 on the pain scale.

i hope this continues.

Get that SA activated, it will make a world of differnce.

What symptoms did you have that came down?

Youtube has several hits for "serratus anterior push ups". Which one do you like best? Which matches what you're doing?

Thanks.

mspennyloafer 02-25-2012 09:17 AM

holy crap that is awesome and gives me hope

i did a scapular pushup correctly ONCE and then i couldnt do it again. you're supposed to feel your ribs wrap around your rib cage when you do it.

i cant tell my pecs from my lats from s.a. it all feels the same. i'm going to ask my pt for some serratus slide type exercises or something less intense.

these arent serratus pushups but this guy is a shoulder guru. he talks about pushups in another video

mspennyloafer 02-25-2012 09:29 AM

i personally wouldnt trust a video that doesnt make a big deal about activating your core and having good head posture

mspennyloafer 02-25-2012 11:56 AM

the serratus slide you mentioned helllothere is good, i just did it, im surprised my pt hasnt even mentioned that

i think im doing it correctly. its kind of hard to tell.

i wanna be able to do this. ^

best advice i can give u. find a PT who has alot of experience in neuromuscular training.

What works for me will be differnt for u , i expermimented with a few differnt ways of doing it and was guided by my pt.

mspennyloafer 02-26-2012 11:31 AM

yeah its so easy to do these wrong

i have a pt watching me do scap pushups, say im doing it right but it still doesnt feel right.

just remember the whole "wrap around the ribcage thing"

anyone who just says SQUEEZE YOUR SHOULDERS BACK TOGETHER needs to be shot in the face
