I'm Technologically Challenged
I'm technologically challenged. My own fault, I admit. But I just can't seem to want to be any more advanced than I already am. I don't own a "smart phone" or a Kindle or an iPad. I don't text. The only thing I do that is the least bit "now" is surf the Internet. I do bank and shop online but that's out of necessity. :o I feel like a dinosaur! But, I really don't want all this stuff. I like holding a real book, turning the pages and using my bookmark to save my place. I like being able to log off the computer and not feel like I have to check my Facebook status, my email and/or my messages on my phone. Am I getting old? :p
|
Don't feel bad, Kelly...I don't have any of that stuff either. Closest I came was a pay as you go $10 cell phone I kept in the car for emergencies when driving to & from Minneapolis for neuro appts, Ty infusions, etc...The trouble with Smart Phones is that it requires a Smart User, and that ship sailed awhile back...Besides, I never liked the idea of being that easy to reach at all times. I do have a FaceBook page, and lots of friends that I keep in touch with, but I don't obsess about it...usually. :D

You are not too big of a dinosaur..just a small one!:D Me, I'm the techno rhino.. charging right on through! I would be lost without my computer. We have had one in the house since 1982. ETA: Although life without one was nice while we had no power after the tornados.
I only use Facebook for music artists and "liking" stores. I do Twitter, but again it's only for American Idol fans and a few artists I follow. My cell phone is a simple shared minutes family plan, but no data plan. I do text DH, my brothers and sis-in-law often... and apparently now my neighbor:cool: She just sent a Happy Mothers Day message! I do want an I-pad. I have a 64gig I-pod Touch and I love it's features. Reading books on a larger screen would be nice. DH loves his Kindle and so do I because it means no more added clutter to his already extremely large/over-flowing:eek: book collection!:D Yep, I embrace technology in any way that makes my life easier! |
No problem here! We just got our first flat screen TV 2mos ago... our first DVD player about 5 yrs ago, and we still have our "candy bar" Nokias, which do nothing but talk. We have only one TV 32 inch in the living room. The cable guy was surprised when we had him out here last year...no other TVs..??? unheard of.
I do have a digital camera now, and a MP3 player and 2 laptops, but one has Win 7 on it and I can't really get into it. We still have records on vinyl that hubby plays occasionally. We still read real books, and don't have any "smart" thingeys. And I check things out of a real library. UpNorth we don't even have a bathroom! Only outside! No electricity (except a small 2500 watt generator) and only propane refrig and stove. |
Ooooh...Vinyl records! I have lots of those from when I was working in radio. Didn't make a lot of money, but we got "all the vinyl we could eat"...When we first started switching to CDs, we got those, too. Now, they're all digital. What fun is that? I still play the vinyl. Even my son likes the "antique stereo" when he comes home. :D
|
I'm a late bloomer, myself..:D:p.. Didn't have a PC until I was 62, a cell phone till 60, a color TV or C/A till 35, a Kindle and a FB account till 70. I still don't have nor do I want smart phone or IPad (although an IPad looks like fun)
See, old has nuttin to do with it, Kell. |

I love my vinyl records! I still play them often and still pick them up at thrift stores! :D Would buy new music on vinyl, if it wasn't so expensive! lol |
I'm a techno junkie but I don't expect others to be the same. I have to admit that it is convenient to lay back in my chair with my Xoom tablet in my lap to go about my online activities.
As long as you are ok with what you have, you don't need anything else. Don't let pushy salespeople (or friends) tell you otherwise unless you really think it will make your life more enjoyable. I have to tell you that I am very successful in selling technology to people of all ages, even those in their 80s. When you learn about how easy and convenient these devices really are, it helps to let you see how they make your life easier and more enjoyable. But I still enjoy my used paperback books at bedtime. :) |
I have a TracPhone that has the capability of sending a text message but it takes me several minutes to even figure out how to say and send the word yes! It amazes me whn my kids find and do things on my computer that I never knew and would never be able to recreate. My techy SIL is anxious to get ahld of my Nook. I'm sure he will find many things to do on it that I never knew was on it and may find me some free apps that I really don't need. I enjoy reading on it and the 'read to me' books for kids is just great. Even I enjoy reading them.
I hop I never have to give up my cable and DVR. I have no idea how to operate my DH VCR and DVD player. |
I have an 8 track player with tapes. :o
|
OK! Some of you gals are scaring me because I don't even understand what you are talking about. Some of it I recognize from looking through the Sunday Best Buy insert. And what the heck does a "candy bar" have to do with technology anyway?
Five years ago my wife got me a TracFone for emergencies when I drive within my five mile radius of home. In that time I've made four calls and received six not counting three from telemarketers. Forget about texting. I don't even know how to raise and lower the volume. One time I "butt switched" the phone and my screen went blank. I had to call the company to step-by-step get walked through to get me screen back. :o I am highly proficient with a PC and many applications but only because I have screwed up so massively and worked my way out of it. I didn't even know what a blog was until April of 2008 so I started on using Google Blogspot and it actually looks alright. My wife does all of the recording, VHS to DVD, TV shows and movies and electronics set up. I can work the microwave on a basic level and turn the dishwasher on if the buttons have not been changed. That's it. |
Craig, don't feel bad. Your household sounds alot like mine! I have to call my son at work some days just to get the TV remote to work for me! :o I guess it would help if I could see the buttons I'm pressing!
I have a Safelink tracphone, too. They say I can text on it but it would take me all day just to type out a short message. I've received a text on it but had no idea how to reply. So, I called the person so they wouldn't think I was being rude and ignoring them! I keep my phone with me all the time but hardly ever use it. I think I have about 950 minutes accumulated now! I have no desire to be any more "advanced" than I am now. I get by just fine and it's less I have to remember. |

I do not have nor do I know how to use a Kindle thing, ipod, ipad, any other i thing, mp things, etc.
I have an "Electrophonic solid state 8 track cartridge player." I just read that off the front of it. I got a phone. Don't know how to text. I'm simply an on/off kinda guy with the tv/stereo/dvd. My wife handles everything else. I can't live without my digital camera, but the videocam thing is above me and goes unused. I can use a computer and do use Facebook - for the Castle Age game. I also know alot of things about how to launch, fly, and land the space shuttle but let's face it - this stuff is 30 year old technology. I still use dos occasionally. And I can still design most of the mechanical systems in a nuke plant. Tom |
A "candy bar phone" is one with everything on the front. It does not flip open, doesn't take pics, etc. Nokia's were mostly this type for a long time.
This is the one we have, http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Nok...i--3586i_id554 Called a "candy bar type" because of its size and shape. I see it says no more supported, but ours is working fine with Sprint still with no contract! We have 2 of them for $59./month. |
I guess I enjoy my candy bar!

Ah Tom, nice to hear from our rocket scientist on all of our tech questions of the day..:D

The only reason I have my Kindles and am about to get an iPad in a week or two is because I have a dad who LOVES gadgets. He's the one who got me interested in computers. (bought our first one in 1981 for my b-day, it was his, but my sister and I used it more)
My dad attempted to get me a Sony ereader for Xmas several years back just before the Kindle came out. The demand for the Sony ereader was so huge, that it was backordered for 5 months. I ended up getting frustrated and canceled the order. Good thing I did because my dad got me my first Kindle that next Xmas. I'm just glad it was my first ereader. My dad just loves new gadgets, and apparently he's passed that down to me. Probably because he has to get me whatever gadget it is and have me learn how to work it, so that I can teach my dad how to work it. I think the only reason I got a new ipod touch for Xmas this year was because he wanted one and had plans to take my old one after he gave me the new one. I've had to teach him how to use it. Today I downloaded an application to my ipod that I can use to set recordings on my cable box, as long as I have an internet connection. I was able to tell my ipod to tell my cable box to record Jeopardy! while I was sitting in the backyard. That was really cool. Finally an ipod app that's not a game that's useful for something. My mom is not technical at all. She can check her email on her computer, and do google searches. That's about it. She has a cellphone that we bought for her in 2002 that still works. I hope she can still make calls on it, because last month, they now require us to dial the area code before dialing the phone numbers. I have to always remind my mom she has to do the area code first to make a phone call now. I'm glad that I live now when we have all these cool toys to play with. I can still remember watching tv on a black & white back in the 70's, and we only had 3 channels. My dad bought a color tv, and then got a VCR, and then got cable...and that's probably what started my obsession with gadgets. |
My oldest son is the "gadget king" in our family. He's got every new gadget that comes out. It's never hard to know what to get him for a gift......it's just expensive!
|
Thank goodness I have 19 year olds. As they move to better stuff, I get their old cell phones and computer stuff. Mom just e-mails, visits NT and uses phone to talk. They know to help Mom if anything is needed. I think my Kindle does more, but I just read. I can read an Analog clock, can anyone under 30? I used to wind a watch. Shoot, I have clothes older than my kids.

You sound like my husband. He cannot text to save his life. He calls and that's about it. I got him an Android phone and all he does is make calls and use Pandora for music, lol. But he can do that well. :D Quote:
You reminded me of something my nephew did when he got his first PC. He was looking at all of the files, and saw something named "DOS". He didn't think it looked important so he deleted it. I think that was around the time of Windows 3.11. He had to take the computer in for service to fix his error. :D I just installed Windows Explorer 9 and it was buggy, so I had to go back to Explorer 8. Oh the joys of computers. :) |
