No sound

I had a terrible virus on this computer yesterday and with the help of compaq we got rid of it but now I have no sound. Can't hear Utube...etc.
Help! :o

Lara 05-29-2011 06:17 AM

Need more information.

Compaq helped you? That's really good to hear but how do you mean, Alffe? They've never helped me. LOL

Down in the taskbar at the bottom of the page, usually next to the time/date, there is a symbol for the sound. Cone shaped.

If you Left click on the mouse you will bring up a few choices. Check in Volume Mixer. On my computer I have choice of Device and Applications. Check that you have those sliders in the positive.

Alffe 05-29-2011 06:49 AM

LOL..we had to renew our contract with them for a year. Mr.Alffe may have to get back on the phone with them today because I still have no sound...did what you suggested Lara and it made no difference. :o Sliders are at max. volume...nada.

Alffe 05-29-2011 08:48 AM

more info...it seems that U Tube is the only thing I cannot hear. Have tried rejoining....any suggestions?

Do you hear any sounds at all? For example, if you make a video, can you play it back and you can hear it?

If you play something other than youtube (like the online radio?) can you hear this?

Also, (and I know this might sound stupid), but youtube has it's own volume level.

Look under a video and you'll see a little speaker kind of thing. If it says the word MUTE, that means that it should be working. If you don't see the word mute, then IT'S ON MUTE.

Try and slide the lever over to the right, which will bring up the volume

Let me know what happens. This happened to me once. I could hear everything on other stuff but not on youtube. That's how I found about about the volume level thing on the bottom of any video on youtube.

Update:

I made a video showing how this is done. You probably already know this but just in case you don't here you go!!

Thank you Melody...I will let you know how this resolves. Mr.Alffe has been on the phone now with Compaq for hrs. Tech gave up and now a supervisor has taken over "the case". When they worked on my computer yesterday..removing the virus...they obviously removed more than we bargained for...now they have put it all back and are slowing removing things..they claim they have never seen anything like it...~sigh.

I am downstairs on his computer which is fine....I am however STARVING as we were to have lunch two hrs. ago. Loved and appreciated your video....:hug:

Hi.

Go and eat and then report back. Wouldn't it be funny if it were something as stupid as the youtube volume thing??

lol

Alffe 05-29-2011 03:22 PM

It wasn't the utube volume thingy either. Still a mystery but had to quit and go to the basement...tornado sirens going off. Back now and ate. ~sigh :o

Lara 05-29-2011 04:52 PM

Just waking up to Monday here...

"Yikes!" about tornado.

It's difficult if someone else is doing it for you, but I found this...

Alffe

Tuesday 31st May here. 8.51pm ;) Gosh, winter starts here tomorrow.

Hope to wake up tomorrow to some good news that your computer is all fixed. I'll wait up a little while but big storm coming. I'll play it by ear (thunder) so-to-speak. lol

Last message I received from you looked just like this...

??????????????????????????????

Sort of freaked me out because I didn't know what was going on. Maybe you had sent me an email that I didn't receive or something.

Looking forward to good news.

Alffe 05-31-2011 04:43 PM

Sorry I freaked you out...you've got mail!

Jomar 05-31-2011 10:23 PM

If you still have the problem...maybe we can narrow down the factors.

So you can hear the windows notification sounds correct?
Like CD music & online music /radio stations or any website that has a clip or sounds?

Is it only the you tube videos on the you tube website that you can't hear?
or all videos online = Google videos etc?

like what about the hulu website shows, can you hear those?

maybe ??

Thank you Jo...this could prove to be very helpful. I can't hear anything..the video's my sil posted on FB, any utube links, any emails with sound. Linking Utube w/Google is VERY confusing...going to get Mr.Alffe involved in this post. Thank you.

You might need a new sound card.

Like I know what the heck I am saying, but it sounds like a possibility. I mean if you can't hear ANYTHING, and you turned up the volume, turned on the speakers) oh, maybe you don't have internal speakers turned on, or you might have connected external speakers but they are interfering with the process??

This happened to me once.

It's all techo babble and very confusing but let me tell you.

When you get all this fixed, you'll be watching youtube, the SOUND WILL WORK

And you'll be going around shouting HALLELUJAH!!! all over the place.

lol

I know because it happened to me.

Jomar 06-01-2011 09:50 PM

what operating system do you have, XP, Vista, Win 7 or a Mac?

We downloaded the NPR tool bar and I am able to hear public radio on this computer...it's the sound that accompanies videos, and utube songs. Also technical service that tried to help Mr.Alffe had him download "Chrome" which we understand to be the Google browser and when using it, instantly could hear the sounds from Utube perfectly. They and Mr.Alffe believe that somehow it has to do with our internet explorer browser version. They & he have tried to uninstall it and reinstall with all the new updates. Mr.Alffe believes that was unsuccessful because to get all the new updates, it required something called a pack3 and he was never able to install that....so he gave up....so no sound! :(

I suppose we could try to use Chrome as my browser..but don't know what all the implications could be regarding email...etc. :o

Jomar 06-02-2011 11:28 PM

??you don't have Service Pack 3 yet??? (SP3)

That has a lot of newer security stuff for XP - if that's something you haven't downloaded yet I think it would be good to do that.
And it might fix the problem.

I think you can still request a cd of it from Microsoft if you don't want to download it..

info here-

[How to obtain Windows Service Pack 3
There are three ways to obtain the latest service pack:

* You can turn on Automatic Updates so that your computer downloads the latest service pack automatically.
* You can download the service pack manually online.
* You can order the service pack on a CD.]

Google Chrome is another browser like IE, Firefox, Opera and many more free ones.

I you go to a website to get your email it should work just fine- all you have to do is import all favorites & settings (passwords etc.) from your main browser.

to import settings click the little tool/wrench in the top right corner of the browser
go down to options

and select Personal Stuff - on that screen find Browsing data and click the box to import settings.

Hello.
Any time I have a problem the first thing I check is Device Manager it will show any conflicts or disabled devices

Lara 06-04-2011 05:04 PM

excellent advice, stagger.

mrsD 06-04-2011 06:18 PM

I responded to your follow up thread, Alffe. Just so you look there too.
