Musical Instruments . . What do/did you play?

Just for fun . . .

From 5th grade through high school I played the flute. I loved it and still have my open-holed flute. I haven't played it in years but still hold on to it in hopes of starting again. (Of course, it needs some minor adjusting and cleaning first.)

Growing up we had a piano and organ. I never got the hang of it. Well, if I had lessons, I might have caught on but self-teaching did not work for me. Plus, 2 of my brothers played and played well and usually one was always at the piano. Two of my sisters played the organ and were usually at the organ and/or my brothers were playing the piano and the two instruments were in the same room. I would love to learn to play the piano as I think piano music is so beautiful.

What musical instrument did/do you play and/or want to learn to play?

SallyC 05-31-2011 11:41 AM

We had a lot of music in our home but, it was by way of recordings. My great GMA had an old GrammaPhone, my Grandmother played the radio, night and day. My Mother loved all the big bands of the 30s, 40s and 50s.

We never had instruments, but I did take piano lessons in school and played the Kazoo, too..:D

Kitty 05-31-2011 11:44 AM

I played the piano. Took lessons for years (probably at least 7). Now, I have the old piano that my parents had when they got married. Both my sisters played it, too. I've tried hard to take care of it but it's old and needs tuning.

My nephew (the one with the little girl who had cancer) and his wife wanted to give their three children lessons but then Claire got sick and that idea had to go on the back burner. I promised them the piano whenever they could take it. Now that Claire is better they're making plans to come and get it. I'm glad to keep it in the family and let other children enjoy it as much as I did. :)

We always had some sort of music going on in our house too. My parents had all sorts of records - swing music was one of my favorites as well as Harry Belafonte, the Andrews Sisters, Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, the Gershwins and other classical type music, Irish music, and the list goes on. Both my parents loved music and all 10 of us kids either played an instrument and/or sang in a choir at school and/or church. Many times, us kids would get together and all play our instrument together. I sometimes wonder how my parents put up with all those instruments and us learning to play them.

Oh yeah! I remember you talking about giving the piano to your nephew. I didn't realize that it was Claire's dad. Hopefully, they can pick it up. It may bring some much needed joy in to the home.

I re-read your post carefully, and noted that it did NOT say "which instruments do you play WELL", so:

Started playing clarinet when I was 9. It needs new cork and pads, but I can still play it. I have my Grandpa's old C-clarinet also.

Guitar, plunking away with a repertoire of about 6 chords these days--might as well transpose everything to key of G. Can't sing well enough to accompany myself, so it doesn't matter what the range is!

Harmonica

Piano and Organ (no lessons, but taught myself to play after a fashion. I don't play classical music, but can manage hymn-style music, and can fake a melody line and chords) I played the organ in church for almost 30 years, and I fill in at the piano when the "real" pianist isn't there. I also have Mom's old pump organ.

tkrik 05-31-2011 12:07 PM

Cool B2Y! You are quite talented!

My dad played the clarinet when he was younger. I never got the hang on that one.

I tried the trumpet and French horn once as my brothers played. That didn't go well.

I tried the violin. I think it must have been poison to my parents ears as they never encouraged me again on that one. :D

I had no luck with the guitar either.

So the fact that you can play all of those, whether well or not, is pretty amazing! You Go, Girl!:D

Jules A 05-31-2011 01:24 PM

What fond memories you brought back. I played the flute and piccolo and was fairly good, 4th chair out of 17, athough I don't have a lick of rhythm. Tried piano also and never got the hang of it. Perhaps my rhythm deficiet could not be compensated for when the hands needed to do something totally separate?

doydie 05-31-2011 01:52 PM

Took piano lessons for many years, know enough to make my way around a piano but not really make any beautiful music. My Mom either played the piano or organ at church. I loved the violin so my parents decided to start me with that. After my first lesson they were having a concert and asked me if I wanted to play. I decided then that they really didn't care waht I sounded like if they were going to have me play in a concert after only one lesson. Now I play the remote control for tV, radio, CD, DVR anything with a remote control.

barb02 05-31-2011 03:30 PM

I played the clarinet from 4th grade through 12th. So yes, I was a band nerd:p. I was also in choir during my high school years. I no longer have the clarinet. I had my mom donate it to the local grade school many years ago.

I have always wished that I could play the piano. But clarinets were much cheaper. :D None of the other four kids in my family were in band or choir.

kicker 05-31-2011 03:45 PM

I played the Cello in 4th grade so badly my Mom punished my brothers once by making them listen to me practice!! DS can play any instrument he picks up (Banjo, Keyboard, Harmonica, etc.) and the guitar. He's so good on guitar, his HS teacher called us to tell us he was wonderful. DH is woefully adequate at guitar. DS an angel.

TwoKidsTwoCats 05-31-2011 04:05 PM

:D Well I never learned to play it well, but I took piano lessons for 5 years. I did attempt the pump organ at church... poor old thing sounded bad with whomever played it! The old country church was not an ideal location for it..uncontrolled heat/cold/humidity.

I attempted guitar as well. The guitar I used, belonged to my grandpa. He bought it for $12 from a Sears catalog in 1934. Wish I still had it!

The piano I had was an old upright. In it's hay-day it had the old self-playing roller inside. It was converted sometime in the late 1940s just before my grandparents bought it for my aunt. It took 8 men to move that thing from my grandparents home to our home. In the late 1990's my mom gave it to a little church that still uses it!

I still play around with a electronic keyboard I bought about 10 years ago. I'm not coordinated enough to actually play well, but still can pick out a few chords and tunes.

Good thread

Good thread. I think I remember having one like it before, maybe that was a different forum.

6th grade - Coronet

1-8th grade Piano (7,8th grade Organ too)

High school Alto Sax and Violin (I told my dad I loved Sax and Violin's (say it quickly and you'll get it)... I fell in love with the sax when I saw St. Elmo's Fire (my favorite movie) and the violin when I heard Charlie Daniels play "the devil went down to GA". but man it didn't take long to realize I would NEVER be able to play like him. I kept it up because I like country music and there's a place in country bands for violin. I never got into a band but wanted to.

Adult still kept up with the piano and started the harmonica (which I still lay and love).

I have an ear for music and can play anything I hear once on the radio on at least on the piano. I thought about picking up a cheap trumpet but am happy with the harmonica.

Lady 05-31-2011 08:41 PM

I played second violin for 3 years, then first violin for 3 years. I was in two different school orchestras. I played at both of my graduation, commencement ceremonies. I would have rather sat with my friends instead of on stage to receive my diplomas.

I loved to play. I found it very relaxing. I also played the electric keyboard. But my MS right hand tremor, made me hit the wrong key every time I stretched my long fingers. It made me so mad I gave it away.

Even when I type, my one hand is faster than the other, and I make many typo's.

I rather listen to music on the radio or blast my stereo. I'm bad. ;) I don't like buds in my ears.

Debbie D 05-31-2011 09:54 PM

I played classical piano for several years. My first teacher was elderly, but really knew how to teach...
she became ill with cancer and was quickly on her death bed. She managed to call my mom and begged her not to let me quit..."She has quite a bit of talent..."
I managed to play for a few more years, but lost interest...now the poor piano sit unused, and DH refuses to get rid of it..."It reminds me of what you used to do":(:(

agate 06-01-2011 12:44 AM

All this is in the past tense for me but I still listen to recorded music.

I began with piano at age 6 and took lessons for about 12 years. In high school I sang in the chorus and played cello in the orchestra. We played for graduations and gave concerts. (We weren't very good.)

Living in a small town as a child, I was somehow able to play the organ in a church on Sunday for a while because they needed organ music and had nobody on tap who was an organist. They figured I could do it since I played piano. So I did.

I sang in a number of choirs and choruses for years. Since MS came along I gave up on singing and the piano but learned to play the recorder and spent many happy hours with my two recorders.

I recently sold them but am glad I was able to play them for some years.

My parents were both choral singers, and my mother played the piano. My sister played cello, one brother played violin, one played bass viol--all were in school orchestras.

tkrik 06-01-2011 09:44 AM

Earl - I'm not sure if we've had this thread before but it is fun.

With all us "musicians" we could start an MS band/orchestra. Now, what could we call it . . .Myelin Gone Wild?:p

Doesn't matter what name we choose for the band, we'll all forget it anyway.

:D:D:D LMAO! That is funny! (and probably true for some of us. I am fortunate I have a decent memory - just not visual and auditory if the conversation gets too complex.:o).

My name for a band

I think the perfect name for a band from this group would be "gimps with Rythem".

TwoKidsTwoCats 06-01-2011 03:41 PM

A band name... hmmmm

For the rockers: Rocking Rollators ; Holes and Rollators ; Raging Roids

For the country set: Boot Scooters ; Hobbling Along

For the gospel sound: Holy Rollators

:D

I played the flute too! I started in the 5th grade and also played in 6th. I liked it, but I discovered choir and the piano and there was no turning back. I took piano lessons for 6 years, and my DM also took them for a short time. Our piano teacher came to our house for our lessons and since she was also a dental hygienist, she also cleaned our teeth on the living room couch! I still play piano now, but not very often. About six years ago, we moved our piano to the basement to make more room upstairs. Since we did that, I have hardly played.

My absolute favorite song to play on the piano is 'Amazing Grace', I could play it over and over again for hours and never get tired of it!

Mine too! I had the church version, a jazz version, and a little rock version I played. Drove my mom nuts, but she sang along. My baby brother played a song called Black Bear Stomp. A simple beginner tune, but that kid could rock it up, jazz it out and take it to church. I think he played more by "ear" than actually learning to read music. Funny, 40 years later he can still play that song...but nothing else! :D

Whuh?

I still play piano for church in synch with the organ. I don't play fancy stuff, just hymns. I've always maintained the good Lord made me a "work-horse", not a "show-horse." *sigh

saphirrain 06-05-2011 02:36 AM

Instruments

I played Cello for 6 years, Clarinet for 8, and Trumpet for 4.

Earl 06-05-2011 04:35 AM

LOL- obviously twink, my dear dingbat, I meant "play and love".

ewizabeth 06-05-2011 08:37 PM

We had an electronic organ with color keys that I played off and on as a kid. I never could learn to read music. Music class bored me.

I tried to learn the flute in high school but dropped that because we had a creepy music teacher, and again, it bored me. :o

My mom's side of the family had lots of musical talent, but it missed me. Our youngest son has it though. He plays drums in a country rock band and also plays bass and regular guitar and sings.

Dejibo 06-06-2011 08:47 AM

I play the air guitar. :D

I used to play the piano, but my fingers dont do what I tell them anymore. I was huge on djembe drums or congo drums, but my rthymn is off. I could play the guitar, but the nerve pain on my finger tips makes holding a cord difficult. I always wanted to play the violin, but no one ever offered to teach me. Banjo is fun, but I cant do the finger thing anymore. it causes too much nerve pain.

I guess I will stick to the air drums, and the air guitar now. :o

LOL Dej! I play all sorts of instruments in my imagination! :D When I listen to music I am usually "playing" some instrument. I'm quite good too!:D:D

ewizabeth 06-07-2011 09:43 PM

In my imagination I can sing and also dance plus write the choreography for the dances of Madonna. My work is actually in very high demand. They know me by first name and have me on speed dial. :p

doydie 06-07-2011 10:36 PM

I can shake my boobies like Lady Gagas!!!! Does that count>

tkrik 06-08-2011 10:16 AM

LOL Doydie! That counts.

It's amazing what we can accomplish and do with our imagination. :D

Vonn07 06-08-2011 03:41 PM

I posted the other night when it 'went down' ... so, this is what I said: LOL

I played the flute - because I had buck teeth and an overbite ... sorta the 'bugs bunny' look ... but the boys called me Beav - and would walk by and ask me to sharpen their pencils ...

I marched in parades and half-time football games for our high school ...

while on bus ministry (Sunday for church) .. picked up kids from the inner city ... (I was blessed that God kept me safe!!) ... and we would sing fun songs ... and one little girl said that "I sang like Marie" ... the Donny & Marie Show was popular then ...

I really can't sing - but back then ... I was pretty good - and had fun!!

p.s. I finally got braces in 7th grade ... and got them off before our sophomore pix were taken - and I smiled big time!! I love the dentist!! :circlelove:

couldn't really play the flute after the braces were off!!
