walking/standing with pn
My pain level is higher when walking and especially standing.
Is this norm for pn and do most pners who work have standing jobs or sitting jobs? Can I further damage my feet by standing for long periods? Any help greatly appreciated. |
I think everyone is different.
I hurt more when I go to bed. |
Stan i am in the same boat. If i stand for more than ten minutes or walk any distance i am in agony. it feels like i am standing or walking on broken bones. It has continued to get worse from year to year. The broken bones feelings werent my original pains in my feet, they developed years ago but i had had pn for about 5 years ( i dont remember exactly when) at that point.

I'm afraid I will have to leave the family business and get a desk job. |
i am retired medically Stan, but it wasnt because of PN at that time though im sure i would have been put out because of PN as it progressed if i hadnt been already put out for pulmonary disease. i had PN then also but didnt know what was going on at that time and didnt find out until 7 months after i was retired. I definitely could not work on my feet or walking at this time at all because of PN and it really just fatigues me in general. My hands and arms are also affected but not to the degree my feet and legs are, i drop things consistently and anything i have to do with my arms unsupported or over my head or repetitively just tires out my arms quickly.

i am a tennis coach. my hands are affected so i cant hit either. i have a young guy does all the running and hitting for me. sometimes sitting is as bad as standing. all i can do is lay down until it stops hurting, usually after 4 or 5 hours.

if they swell constantly from walking or standing then damage can be done from the swelling. i think it would depend on the person and what is causing the pain which would determine if more damage was being done. damage from pn can and does progress even if you do nothing. if the pain is from the brain getting no or garbled signals from the brainnerves then i dont think you would be doing more damage. Personally i would and did and still do what i can while i still can.

Stan have you talked to your doctor about what type of activity and how much you should do? Everyone I feel is different. For myself it is finding the right balance between not doing too much yet not doing to little. Either extreme causes me problems. I am not sure it is damage but more the pain gets so high and does not settle.

I have "advanced loss" of disk space height at L5/S1, gluteus medial/minimus hip tendinitis and pn in my feet. No back pain though. Can't find a cause for pn. Looks like it might be the back. What do you guys think? |

I'm a newbie that can certainly agree with the increased pain with walking and standing!

I think attention to shoes is critical ....
Also tying shoelaces too tight... AVOID AVOID. If you have Tinel's sign on your top instep, watch anything that hits those nerves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarsal_tunnel_syndrome Anyone with foot pain, really needs to see a podiatrist to rule out other sources or problems. I have multiple foot problems and find understanding them, helps in finding comfortable solutions. |
I find that shoes with Velcro straps provide good ability
to loosen or tighten many different times of the day, even when driving longer distances. Very easy to adjust. |
Some days, I feel like I could hike for miles... other days, 1-2 aisles in the grocery store and I'm done... and the biggest problem is not figuring out what I do to make it worse 1 day to the next...

I will say that this last month I have had an increase in better days, possibly because of the physical therapy. Still, I have some rotten mornings. |
