Obnoxious, Annoying Commercials

Is it just me or does there seem to be an epidemic of loud, obnoxious, annoying commercials on TV nowadays?

One just came on.......for Direct Auto insurance. Lady was jumping around, whooping and hollering on top of a counter in a restaurant. She was excited because her car insurance bill was so low.

Then there is the one for a cell phone. Setting is in a restaurant. The lady sees a picture of a huge spider on the man's cell phone and apparently thinks it's real. She screams bloody murder and he takes off his shoe and proceeds to smash the phone. Very loud. Very annoying.

Anybody else scramble for the mute button when commercials come on? And why are they so loud?? The show I was watching wasn't that loud.

Maybe I should have put this post in the pity party thread!

mrsD 07-21-2011 03:40 PM

J.G. Wentworth.... screaming ...endless screaming... "its my money and I need it now" !

doydie 07-21-2011 03:48 PM

The Dairy Queen commercial. When they had that big set of teethe talking it was cute. But this new program, I do mute it

Blessings2You 07-21-2011 03:57 PM

There are a handful of ads I actually like (the first several hundred times) but most of them we mute. Even my husband uses the remote now that he's discovered the mute button.

The local ones, bobble-head screaming car dealers and furniture stores, are the worst as far as loud and obnoxious. Even worse to us are the sleazy previews of Entertainment Tonight, the double entendres, and the endless ads for products children don't need to know exist. Ugh.

Kitty 07-21-2011 04:00 PM

Oh, B2Y, don't get me started on the personal products. You'd think if someone actually had that particular problem they'd surely know what to do about it. Not have to wait for a TV commercial to suggest a remedy. I remember when they couldn't even show a woman in her underwear (bra, panties) on TV. Now, we're lucky if they even have underwear on!

I love my MUTE button!

I HATE the drug commercials. Everyone smiling and having fun while the voice over tells the terrible side effects....diabetes, death, TB, infections.

At least the toenail fungus drugs are gone. Those commercials were SO MISLEADING.... those drugs caused terrible liver damage and failure!

I just saw one yesterday! Not the talking toenail that lifts up and little germs crawl around. Just a picture of a real toenail (pretty yucky looking) and the medicine being brushed on and around it.

Blessings2You 07-21-2011 04:29 PM

Last night we were watching something, probably the news, and before my husband could hit the mute button, we were blessed with: "Does feminine itching drive you crazy?" I seriously thought he was going to mute that sucker for good.

mrsD 07-21-2011 05:09 PM

Those OTC toenail things are not the same.

I am referencing the RX drugs for toenail fungus which were so toxic they could kill you for a simple problem! Maybe you don't even remember them?

Blessings2You 07-21-2011 05:24 PM

I remember my dad taking something (started with L?) that gave him some problems.

Kitty 07-21-2011 05:30 PM

Seems like everything is coming back to haunt us. I've seen many commercials about lawsuits if you took certain drugs. Currently it's the mesh used in surgery to hoist prolapsed organs up.

I used to be one of the people answering the phone for that stupid nail fungus commercial. We had to read everything word for word. The stuff about the liver damage was in the script we had to read to everyone. I had that whole script pretty much memorized. People would always stop me at the liver damage part and start asking questions.

I learned from that particular job to not ever take any medications for nail fungus if I wanted to keep my liver. (this is why I'm missing the index toenail on my left foot now. Gave up the nail before I would risk my liver)

On of the symptoms of fibro is noise intolerance. There is nothing wrong with my hearing, just can't stand the noise. Closed caption is always on my tv. It's great!

Vonn07 07-21-2011 10:48 PM

yep ... one of the reasons I decided AGAINST having cable/direct TV of any sort!! why pay $30 a month for commercials ... I think I broke my thumb changing channels ...

I do miss my FoodNetwork, HGTV ... and Discovery/History ... but, now I can get FULL episodes FREE online ... or DVDs from the library and have them for a week .. COMMERCIAL free!!

haven't figured out what to do with the $30 I'm saving - OH ... duh!! paying for electricity to power my AC unit to keep cool as I'm melting!! LOL

Jodylee 07-22-2011 06:23 AM

The commercials actually are louder than the shows! I remember reading something in Time magazine or somewhere about people trying to get a law passed that commercials could would have a limit to how much louder they could be. So ridiculous. But it does get everyone's attention .

I find I watch less and less TV. #1 my vision is bad, and I cant sit thru a whole show. I use my DVR to record what I want, and I will pause it at the commercial line, rest my eyes, come back and zip thru the commercial.

I have Hulu, NetFlix and Vudu, so I can rent just about any movie I want here at home, without ever having to go to a sticky, loud, dark, blurry, over priced theater.

Hulu or ONDEMAND will allow me to watch any show I want for Free from the TV show line up.

I love being able to sit and watch my show when I am ready to watch it. There is something about the evening news coming on the TV that makes my phone ring everytime. Seems like that is the exact time everyone wants to call me. So I record the news and can watch the first ten minutes and then move on. Also putting a disc into the blu ray player is like magic. it can actually send out a signal to all of my friends and neighbors saying "i wonder what debbie is doing? lets call!" UGH! I am tired of pausing movies to answer the phone. Most times I let it go to voice mail.

SallyC 07-22-2011 01:28 PM

They are all loud, obnoxious and annoying but, the quieter ones are the ones I will listen to.

Do YOU hEAr ThAt ADveRTizERs?????:hissyfit::Soapbox:
:Poke: :deadhorsebeat: :yikes: :Help:

Kitty 07-22-2011 01:47 PM

I love the ones for Pampers.....that shows all the different little babies. There's soothing music, it's not loud and the babies they show are so cute. I never get tired of seeing that commercial.

One for a local furniture warehouse type store just came on and the man was shouting the entire time. Do these people think we can't hear? Or that we'll listen better if they yell at us? I don't.....I mute it or change the channel. You'd think they'd figure it out.

doydie 07-22-2011 10:20 PM

I just dislike the fact that the commercials are so much louder than shows

We scramble for the mute button EVERY time this one comes on. It's the worst annoying commercial ever. I don't remember the product. I remember only the feeling of a spike being rammed through my head.

Dejibo 07-23-2011 07:26 AM

When I hear Sara Mcglauglan (butchered the spelling) I RUN for the remote! I dont want to see any more abused animals. STOP! I dont want to see burned, broken, butchered or battered animals at 10am! I dont want children who are watching cartoons or the sitting with grandma while she watches Ellen to see it either! OMG stop! or make it after 10pm. its too graphic.

We will be watching a movie, and the commercial comes on and WOW! THAT IS LOUD! HOW CAN THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS? Why cant I turn on the movie, lay down the remote and just watch the movie? why do I have to hold the clicker as if its my life line?

Blessings2You 07-23-2011 07:42 AM

On the other end of the spectrum, there is a commercial for a furniture store in Burlington that features the owner and his son. They started it a few years ago when the son was quite little, and at the end they dub in a deep man's voice saying "low prices" while the kid lip-syncs the words. A gimmick, sure, but cute enough and not over the top.

Other than that little gimmick, it's just a man (and his now teenage son) speaking in a professional way, promoting their product. No bobble-heads, no screaming, no stupid or off-color stuff.

I sent them an email and told them that I appreciated a "classy" ad like theirs. If I lived near Burlington, I would go to their store FIRST just because of the commercial. There are places I would boycott BECAUSE of their commercials.

SallyC 07-23-2011 01:27 PM

Oh that commercial about the battered and abused animals. Those people are going straight to he!! for their abuse of our feelings!!

Andddddd, if I ever go to Pepboys for anything, may lightening strike me daid.

Kitty 07-23-2011 02:12 PM

I dive for the remote when the Humane Society or ASPCA commercials come on. And if I can't find the remote I put my fingers in my ears and say "la la la la la la la" till I am either out of earshot or the commercial goes off.

NO KIDDING! Last time I asked that very same question, the answer I got was that there's a certain spectrum of allowed decibal range for any broadcast. There are natural highs and lows in a 'normal' soundtrack that includes conversation, laughter, car chase, scary music, whatever....
BUT, in a commercial, the creators of those soundtracks make sure every single bit of sound is maxed out so you'll be sure not to escape a second of the advertisement....

Debbie D 07-25-2011 04:49 PM

I thought Congress had passed a law that they had to tone down the audio on commercials, but I haven't heard it occur yet...

Now, if only we could eliminate political ads. I don't agree with the Supreme Court that states they have a free speech right to be able to advertise those pac ads. Why should they have the right, when cigarette company ads aren't allowed? where's their free speech?

Dejibo 07-25-2011 05:53 PM

Those get out the vote ads for each candidate make me crazy! I live in NH and we are first in the nation for primaries, and we take that very seriously! Its amazing to me how many ads are out year round for one candidate or another. ALL BAD! This guy is a bad guy! this guy eats puppies, and smacks little children! its awful.

Congress did say that commericials cannot be louder, than the loudest part of the movie its mixed into. So, if you are watching a loud action flick you are going to get LOUD commercials. if you are watching a softer chick flick you are going to get less noise in the commercial but they WILL crank it up to the loudest decibel possible.

WHAT????! I CANT HEAR YOU!!!

Kitty 07-25-2011 06:11 PM

Somebody needs to invent a remote that automatically mutes any commercial that comes on. I'd buy one!
