I just bought another e-reader
Went to Borders today. The Kobo e-readers were 30% off (covers for them were 40% off)
So, I bought one. (my dad and I pooled our money. Kobo is mostly mine since I pooled in more money than he did.) We're planning on using the Kobo for library e-book borrowing. I'm kind of hoping that I can get my mom to learn how to use the Kobo, so that she can have an e-reader of her own. (if mom doesnt use it, my dad and I will share it) My dad and I thought that one that has library capability would be good. So a clearanced (but brand new) Kobo sounded like a better deal than a brand new, full priced Kindle for my mom. So far, it's not bad. I'm still waiting for it to charge up, but I've been playing with it and have added a couple of library books to it to see how difficult it was to transfer a borrowed book to it. (surprisingly easy!) It's a Kobo Wifi (they had one Kobo Touch left, for $90, which was 30% off whatever their original price was... I almost bought that instead) They had like 50 of the plain Kobo Wifi's tho. It's supposed to have the same screen as the current Kindle, but I think the Kindle screen has better readability. The Kindle looks sharper to me. The Kobo came pre-loaded with 100 "classics". (basically 100 books that they got from Project Gutenberg...yes, they actually say "Project Gutenberg" on the e-books when you open them) I'm probably going to go back for another cover tomorrow. One I got, I dont really like, but "all sales are final", so I'm stuck with that one. That cover was $10, so it's not that big a deal. They were having a 40% off sale on the covers, so I'll probably go and see if there's anything a little nicer that doesnt use velcro to hold the Kobo in the cover. I still have to figure out how to add it to our WiFi. We have a hidden SSID (basically people cant see that our wifi is on if they're using a wifi "sniffer" looking for an open connection. If I cant use the wifi here at home, that's no big deal, since I can transfer books with the computer, or just take the Kobo to Panera or McDonald's and use their internet connections. I guess I do collect gadgets. My dad has a Kindle 2, I have a Kindle 2, a Kindle 3, an iPad and now the Kobo. I'm all excited that I got the Kobo on a fairly good discount tho. Too bad I'll never see any Nooks discounted, otherwise I'd probably have one of those too. (it's just sad how much I'm addicted to gadgets) |

I don't know what an E-reader is but I have Kindle on my I-phone and I love it.

What's really sad is that I just had to go back down to Borders and buy another cover for the Kobo. (hey! they were 40% off! I needed it!) Didnt really care for the generic one-size-fits-some cover of dubious origin that my dad picked out. I decided to get another one that was a bit better of a quality, and also didnt smell like a chemical factory exploded next to it.
My Kindles both have two covers apiece, now the Kobo has two covers. It's a sickness...really. I love buying accessories for my gadgets. The Kobo cover will also fit my Kindle 3. While I was there, I almost bought a cover for my iPad. (iPad covers are 40% off too) but I had some self control and didnt do it. (wasnt the kind of iPad cover that I like) |
Doydie is right. I think we need an intervention here..:D:p:D
I have 1 Kindle 1 cover and so far 20 -99cent mysteries read.. I do not have the urge to dress the Kindle for dinner..:D EDIT....Just kidding you ya know, I couldn't resist....I'm bad!! |
:D Erin, maybe I shouldn't tell you, but Consumer Reports September 11 issue has reviews of tablets and e-readers!
I want an I-pad and a Nook Color, but I don't need both. I-pad for ease of use and size of the screen. Nook Color because it does more of what I want at a cheaper price, but smaller screen. I have birthday money burning a hole in my pocket! :D |
I want the Nook too...specifically the Nook Color. But, I'm hoping the price will go down. (probably wont. I think the economy will get worse and some serious inflation is going to hit pretty soon and gadgets will become completely unattainable to me)
The Nook Color would be cool, because it'll do basically what my iPad does, but it's smaller and probably easier for tired MS hands to handle. The iPad is heavy compared to the Kindle and the Kobo. Tonight, I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to get the Kobo to recognize my Wifi set up. Finally got it figured out about a half hour ago. Nice thing about the Kobo, is that I didnt need to put a CC number into it to download a FREE book. (downloaded a book of Robert Burns poetry) Not sure yet if I'm going to actually buy books from the Kobo store, so I'm not putting any CC numbers into that account until I need to. I'm going to see how useful the Kobo will be for library books. If I can figure out how to put personal documents into it, I'm going to put an SD card into it and store fan fiction stories I get for free off the internet on it. Have to reformat my SD card and see how it works. That's the other thing I like about it. I can expand the storage from the 1gb (which is half full with the 100 included free books that were pre-loaded on it) up to some yet unknown GB with the SD card. (still trying to figure out what I can do with this thing) So far, it's a good e-reader. If you cant afford the $114 for the cheapest Kindle, but can swing the $69 for the clearanced Kobo at Borders, I'd probably say go for it. I dont think Kobo's bookstore has the variety that the Kindle bookstore has tho. But, the library access kind of makes up for that (and borrowing library e-books is free) The Kobo doesnt seem to be as "idiot proof" as the Kindle is. The Kindle pretty much works right out of the box. I had to charge the Kobo for 4 hours and call the Kobo customer service to get it set up. There's no physical keyboard on the Kobo like the Kindle, which I wasnt sure I liked, but when I had to enter in the passwords and network name to get it on the internet, I really didnt have a problem using the cursor thingie to hunt and peck the letters and numbers. Less actual buttons on the Kobo, so I guess I wont have to worry about wearing out any keyboard keys. I am sitting here, thinking...what am I going to do with a 3rd e-reader? (fourth if you count my iPad, but I dont really use the iPad as an e-reader) But, I've already read one of my library books and have started on the 2nd. (short stories) That's something that I cant do with my Kindle. I'm going to have to really look at my local library's website and really look for stuff to read, instead of just the books that I already have on my Kindle. I'm really hoping that I can get my mom to use the Kobo. She needs something to do that will stimulate her mind and keep her active. If I can get her to use the Kobo, she can read library books and keep her brain going. |

I am a gadget girl! I luv my gadgets! Im with ya erin, anytime you can get a new gadget...go for it! |
I'm slowly comin' around to the techo world. :o I'd really like to have something (Nook, Kindle, ???) to read books on. Both my sons are "gadget" guys....especially oldest DS. He has every gadget made and then some. He's a great go-to person for those of us (ME) who can't understand these things.

Even tho I just got the Kobo, I still think the Kindle is the best e-reader.
The Kobo is a nice entry level e-reader, and if you can get one cheap like I did, it'd probably make a great first e-reader, but Kindles are getting cheaper also. Kindles should be getting library access soon. Not sure when, but they're supposed to be getting it. If you're a library book borrower, the Kobo might be the one to get now. But, it doesnt seem that the Kobo bookstore has that much selection in books to buy, so if you like having a huge selection of books to buy, the Kindle might be the way to go. Or you can be like me and just collect e-readers. |
Someday I want to be as smart as my iPhone. It's the original 3g, in other words, an oldie but goodie. I'm still learning it's features amost 2 years later. I'd never be able to figure out the things Erin "collects"! I do have the free Kindel app on it and download free books.
|
Erin, you could put the app reader for all those different e-readers on your Ipad...then you wouldn't need more of the gadgets! :p
I have the apps for Kindle, Kobo and the I-book on my I-pod. I mostly read the free books from each. It's great for reading while I'm waiting in lines or at doctor appts... But I really want to get the Nook Color for magazines. |
I put the apps for the Kobo and the Nook (even tho I dont have a Nook) on my iPad, and then promptly removed them. Didnt care for them.
I do have the Kindle app on my iPad, and the iBooks app (Apple's own reader program) but I've only used the iBooks app once, for a crochet pattern I downloaded. The Kindle app is the only reading app that I use on the iPad or my iPod Touch. I'm apparently very loyal to the Kindle app. I finished reading my library books on my Kobo already, and found another one. I like the library access that the Kobo has. The Kobo seems to hurt my hands tho. The page turn button is in the bottom right hand corner on the Kobo. Kind of uncomfortable to hold. The Kindles that I have both have "next page" buttons on either side of the Kindle screen. Which I like. More comfy to hold. At least the Kindle and the Kobo are lighter than my iPad. I only read on my iPad when it's sitting in the charging cradle and I'm crocheting or knitting. (easier to turn the pages with one finger swipe when I'm knitting or crocheting. |
I lurve my Kindle.:In-Lurve:

I love my Kindle. I only have use of one hand, I can hold it, turn the page and it never bothers me. I love my Kindle. Nothing else would be so right for me. Needs differ, Kindle does it for me.

Did I mention I love my Kindle?

Our Kindles are very loved, arent they?
This reminds me that I need to show my Kindles that I love them by plugging them in to charge. It's been a few weeks since they've been fed. (love that long battery life!) |
I have the Motorola Xoom with the Kindle app so I can read ebooks if I so desire, but I like reading paperbacks in bed before I go to sleep so I don't often use the Xoom for that purpose. I get my paperbacks used from Amazon for cheaper than ebooks on the kindle app.
Just ordered another tablet, the Samsung galaxy tab 4G that should arrive tomorrow. My Xoom is dominated by family members so the galaxy tablet will be all mine. :Dancing-Chilli: It will run on Verizon's network, and 4G service will be here in about a month's time so I will be ready. I got an extra $50 off the galaxy tablet because I ordered a new smart phone for my youngest son. There's a current promo in our area for buying a smart phone and getting $50 off of any tablet on contract so I saved some money with that promo. |
Oh, you gadgetteers..What's next?:D
Question: How many PCs, Smartphones, tablets, Pads or Readers does it take to screw in a lightbulb??? :yahoo: |
My family thinks I'm a tech addict but I always just change the subject. I think Erin is one too, what do you all think? :D
|
yeah, I'm a tech addict.
I was at WalMart last night, and was looking at all the e-readers they had there. I really want the Nook Color now. Probably wont ever get one tho. I was playing with their Kindle that's on display. It freaked me out to find out their display Kindle is named "Erin's Kindle". (when you buy a Kindle, Amazon gives it a default name, which is usually your first name) I thought it was interesting that the display Kindle had a working 3g connection to Amazon, and a couple of pages of books that people apparently bought for it while playing around with it. I ended up organizing some of the books into the "collections" (folders) you can make with the Kindle to keep your books organized. I never see anyone showing that feature off. So, I set up a few examples. I should go back and see they're still there. Last night, I had a little ereader charging party on my desk. I had an ipad, two Kindles, the Kobo and my ipod touch all lined up in a row on my desk, plugged into either my computer or the wall outlet, feeding everyone. They're all happily fully charged this morning. |
Amazon probably repossessed Erin's Kindle, after the news got out about your other reader purchases..lol:D:)
|
Nope, because Amazon is the only site that I actually buy my ebooks from. I just bought a book this morning to read on the treadmill at the gym. (book from the Eureka tv show)
The Kobo will probably only be used for library books, or whatever free books I get from their site. I havent even set up a credit card on the Kobo site yet, but I've downloaded 2 free books from Kobo. I guess they dont need my CC info to download free books. iTunes wants my credit card info or I cant download any free apps for any of my Apple products. Which is weird, they're free apps. Why do they need my credit card information? I dont keep my credit card info on any of Apple's iTunes stores because I've heard stories about people's iTunes accounts getting hacked. I'm going to start using gift cards for stuff on iTunes instead storing a credit card number on their site. |
