If I buy a tower, can I still use my monitor?
Okay, we have settled on getting another Desktop. I just need to know which is the better deal.
First one. The tower has Windows 7 home premium, 1.5 Terrabyte and 8 gigs of Ram. It's at Staples and it's $499.00 (obviously plus shipping and taxes) AMD Phenom 960T Quad Core Processor Number associated with this is P7-1020/329411 or HP desktop PC with Intel Core i.5-2390T Processor with Turbo Boost 2.0 512 MB dedicated graphics Windows 7 Home Premium Price is $649.99 FREE DELIVERY!! Oh, the number associated with this item is HB-1010/329412 I have no idea if these things have software already installed. I'll call up to find out. Or we will go to Staples and find out. Oh, "we don't need a new monitor". I have a beautiful flat screen HP Monitor that is 5 years old, it has a headphone jack (extremely needed). And it works fine. Will my monitor work with either of these? And I only need a computer to go on the internet. And I use my Flip. I would assume that both of these have dvd roms, etc?? So if you had to choose, which one is the better deal!!! THANKS MUCH Melody |
Those have way more memory than you would ever need for mostly internet use. The HD is huge - I haven't even put a dent in my 1T drive space.
I don't know if you would ever use the wireless card? just thinking why pay for much more than you will need since technology is improving at such a fast rate. and as long as the monitor plugs in it should work just fine. There are some Basic desktops that would fit your needs just fine - and a bit less $$ too - http://www.staples.com/Basic-Desktops/cat_CL166044 http://www.officedepot.com/catalog/s...EIcJCbBe3j3WCf |

What is the Wireless Card and what does it do? and isn't it true that the more RAM you have, the faster you go on the internet?? Loading up pages, going from site to site??? Thanks much Melody |
Okay, I clicked on this one and it doesn't mention a dvd rom drive. It doesn't have one of those things??

Okay, I am DEFINITELY liking this one. I checked the specs and it indicates it has 6 USBs, so I can do the Flip, my printer, the keyboard and the mouse, right? I just want to make sure that I'm reading this correctly because when you look at the tower it only shows two USB's on the front and I'm thinking, the others must be on the back, right? http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilion-S...5#revs_content So I gather I just go and get this, and plug my monitor in, and (oh, I like my own keyboard, it's a KEYS U SEE KEYBOARD with BIG keys). I can use my own keyboard right? And for the money, this does not come with a monitor, right? The price is great. Just clear up my questions, and I think this is the one I should get. What a difference in savings. And thanks much. I just have to make sure there's a plug and play thing for my monitor (Is that what VGA connection means?) Melody |

Jo: I just took a video of the back of my computer so you could see the monitor plug. Do most towers have the input that would allow me to use my present monitor? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Mjmbh07eg I just want to make sure. I'M LEARNING. lol Melody (and thanks much) |

If you don't need a wireless connection you don't need the wireless card 2- up to a point but 8 G ram is more for gamers & people using a lot of programs at one time. 2.5 G is what I have and it loads pages just fine - I had 1.5 until just this spring. |

And thanks for the info on the dvd rom drive. I had no clue what all those specifications were. So, so far, I'm good to go. I ran this by Allengamer and he did indicate that the HP Slimlines only last one year. I have to look into that. But I do like this one And THANKS. so if all my ducks are in a row, this is a good deal right? Melody |
Monitor connections are standard for the industry- as long as the plug fits into the computer - it should work fine.
http://computers.toptenreviews.com/h...-computers.htm What about asking the computer guy that has worked on yours before, how much to upgrade it? But didn't you just get a new mother board & hard drive and more memory fairly recently this spring?? Is it still having problems? Or are you getting the new one as a second computer? |
Okay, let's talk about me getting a new motherboard and more Ram. Yeah, I did that. And here's why I don't trust what he did. I have a HP Pavillion Media Center. when I got the computer back and I knew he put a new motherboard in, well, when I boot up the computer it says:
COMPAQ Now when I asked him about this, if you think I understood what he said, forget it. It worked great for a while, then the DVD Lightscribe thing stopped playing dvds. So that doesn't work. What happens now is I'll be on Mozilla Firefox and I'll be on the internet and it all goes away. Then I have to reboot. Or....God forbid we have been on the internet and we go off, it won't bring up Mozilla or Internet Explorer. I have to re-boot and then I can go on the internet. Unless we leave it on and we're online, if we should go off the internet, it will never let us go back on, unless we re-boot. That is VERY annoying. I have no idea why, when I click on an icon of either Mozilla or Internet Explorer it just does nothing. That's when I need to reboot. Oh, sometimes it won't let me do the shut down thing. You know, go to start, select "shut off computer" I will select this and it just stays on. To turn it off, I often have to press and hold the power switch for about 5 seconds. We got this computer in 2005. So why would it say COMPAQ when it boots up?? Any ideas? And how do I find out if my present computer as a wireless card. The reason I ask is I just might want to use this as MY computer. Putting it in my bedroom, fooling around with it, re-formatting it, and if I put a router in the living room (when I get a new computer), I could use this to go online and not have to go into the living room. But I know I would have to have a wireless card right? Could I have one installed and not know it? How do I find this out? Thanks much Melody |
Ah I remember the Compaq mystery now ,
HP & Compaq are partners or HP bought Compaq I think, so that could be it. If you had a wireless card there would be an antenna - usually about 3" LONG OUT THE BACK OF THAT PARTICULAR CARD (darn hit caps lock LOL):o like these- http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isc...0l3.4.3.1l11l0 Last time I talked to Verizon ( now mine is frontier) but they wanted to sell me their own wireless modem/router - so if you do go with 2 machines and don't want them both close by the dsl modem (wired) - you cloud look into the Verizon wireless modem/router. not sure what the problems are with your internet - the not shutting down stuff - the not opening browsers.... mine was acting a lil weird so i did a clean & defrag amazingly that fixed the problem - something must have got scrambled when we had a power off /then on again right away. you might try some scans, clean up and defrag it to see it it helps anything. |
Quote:
I have tried to do defrag on Windows xp. Don't know how to do this. Thanks much Melody |
Click Start
All Programs Accessories System Tools click Disk Defragmenter |
Quote:
And I really do thank you very much Melody |
Disk Clean up is right in that same location (System Tools )- i would run it first- then do the defrag.

Looks like I'm going to get that Slim HP Tower thing. It's affordable and we can zip on the internet. Oh, here's a good question. When one buys these new things, they often come with a free trial of Norton or some other Anti virus thingee. Now I pay for Verizon Internet Security Suite and they told me all I would have to do is call them up and they would help me download the software on any new computer I might buy. So should I continue with Verizon or should I give the Norton Free trial thing a shot?? And if I don't use the Norton thing, don't i have to uninstall it because, from what I've been told, you can't have 2 anti-virus softwares on the same computer!! Right? Thanks much Melody |
When I built my parents computer , the windows OS came w/ Norton trial - we used it till it expired and then I uninstalled it and installed a copy of my zone alarm ( covers 3 computers).
Norton is a bit tricky to fully remove if I remember correctly, but that was 2.5 yrs ago, maybe it is easier now. So it's up to you which ever way you want to do it. |
Quote:
Option 1. Activate Norton for the free trial period and at the same time cancel the $5.99 subscription to Verizon Internet Security Suite. Option 2. DON'T ACTIVATE THE NORTON ANTIVIRUS. Or does it come already activated???? Just want to know the facts BEFORE I get this thing. thanks much Melody |
Do you know you are paying 71.88 per yr for the Verizon protection?
- it seems like it has slipped up a few times for you.:( You can get many of the top anti virus programs for much less than that. The Best Antivirus Software for 2011 (So Far) http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2368554,00.asp The Best 10 Internet Security Programs 2012 http://www.security-faqs.com/the-bes...012-my-reviews http://www.pcmag.com/reviews/antivirus The Internet suite ones would probably be the best coverage for your uses. |

Well, when I used to have all those viruses, Verizon would just walk me through it and bingo, every time, they would disable the virus and then delete it. I once asked them. "If I have an anti-virus software, why am I getting viruses"? and they answered (they ALWAYS say this). No anti-virus software can remove EVERY virus. So....I will look into your links and make my decision when we get the new computer. Probably Labor day. Thanks very much. Melody |

Don't open emails from people you don't know, don't open email attachments even from people you do know, don't install programs from other than trusted sources, don't click strange links, keep your software updated, stay away from porn sites (though I realize that's not a problem for you), etc. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my machines and haven't had a virus or malware infection in years. |

Firefox has an extension called NoScript that will allow you to pick and choose which sites you want to allow to run scripts on your machine. Not everything is required for a site to work, such as *edit* on this site, and the vast majority of popups are run by scripting. You can also get an Adblock extension for Firefox and say goodbye to ads. |

It's still in the box. I'm looking at it. I know to unplug the peripherals from the back of my present tower and re-plug all into my new one. And hook up the monitor, then turn everything on. This one is Windows 7. Never had this before. Will I be prompted to create an account. Havent' done that in over 7 years. It's amazing how scary this stuff can be when you haven't done it in 7 years and I don't know Windows 7. I have the Flash drive. Oh, the last time I set up a new computer, I also had to set up the modem, and create a Verizon account. I gather I don't have to do this because I already have the modem set up and I have a Verizon email account. so hopefully, all I have to do is turn it on, create an account (I Have to do this right?) Then I go on the internet, download Mozilla from their site, and then stick the flash drive in and export the favorites? Then I'll copy the my documents folder. (I have to look up one of the previous posts because I forgot how to do that step). Then I'll make sure I have my anti-virus software loaded and I should be good to go!!! Hopefully!!! I'm actually scared to do this. I can use a Vitamix but I'm scared to hook up a new computer. How dumb is this? lol Melody |
