Panic time...my a/c is broken!
First let me explain about how I go about getting it repaired. My landlord has a "service contract" with a company that does repairs for major appliances and things like the a/c. I call the company and set up an appointment.
I got up this morning and the house was 80 degrees! I called the service company and they don't have an appointment until between 8am and 1pm tomorrow . I explained that I have a heat intolerant illness. They put me.on the cancellation list as top priority. I will probably have to stay at a hotel tonight and rush back to the house by 7 am because the service company calls right before they come. If you don't answer they don't show up. If the husband is off tomorrow he could stay here to answer the phone in the morning BUT I seriously doubt that. He'll want to stay at the hotel with me, ARGH! I could tell him too bad buddy you're staying home but that will lead to a weekend of him being a bigger ***** than usual. I could call a repair company myself but lord knows what that will cost me. Thanks for letting me vent :). |
I'd panic, too, if my A/C stopped working. To those who don't have MS heat intolerance it sounds like we're just unwilling to be uncomfortable but that's not it at all. I wish there was an easier way to make folks understand this. I hope they have a cancellation and can get to you sooner.

I just talked to my landlord, she's a very nice lady but I'm questioning her ethics right now.
She asked me to get the husband to go to costco and by a window unit that we can use until tomorrow. She said to SAVE ALL THE PACKING MATERIALS AND RETURN IT OVER THE WEEKEND! I don't think so! Her mom is in the hospital right now so I'm trying to cut her some slack but Jeez! |
If you can swing it go ahead and buy the A/C window unit.....deduct the cost of it from your rent......and keep it for a "just in case" time that your A/C goes out again. Buying it with the sole intent of returning it after using it is wrong. I can't believe she suggested you do that!
Whatever window you decide to put it in she can know that it will stay there after you leave so she can use it as an "extra" for the next tenant. They'll have a "cool room" should the A/C ever go out again. |

On the other hand the last window air conditioner I purchased at Walmart a couple of years ago was only $80 and cools my bedroom perfectly so that might be a better investment than staying at a hotel and then you will have one on hand for the future. |
unfortunately the law may be different in your state but the landlord laws in virginia require that major services such as hot water/ac and heat be fixed within 24 hours or they have to pay for the hotel room. Unfortunately, it is still a 24 hour window. I am glad that my realtor knows about my MS and my heat intolerance. When my Ac has gone out (several times this year) they have been quick to get the guy here. Then again, they know if they dont I will call the first person who will come and send them a receipt along with it being deducted from my rent payment.

The laws in FL are not great. By law, landlords only have to supply HEAT not a/c. Insane. My landlord is trying to find a contractor that will put in a whole new a/c system today. It's 13 years old and needs replaced anyway.
She's been calling me every 1/2 hour and honestly, she's driving me nuts now. I told her to stop worrying and that we will work things out somehow. It's only one day. I have the perfect opportunity to stay in a hotel for a night :). I will give the service company my cell number, duh! Why didn't I think of that in the first place :). |

Florida law doesn't allow us to deduct anything from the rent without written approval from the landlord. I should have bought my own portable or window a/c years ago just in case something like this happens. The master bedroom and living room don't have windows, just huge sliding glass doors so I would have to get one of those portable things that don't require a window. I haven't read anything good about them though so I have been hesitant to get one. Fortunately, this is something I won't have to worry about for too much longer ;);). |
What are you going to do with your cats? Can they go to the hotel with you?
|
Good news!!! My landlord is sending a repairman NOW :). She's having the new a/c installed this week.
|
Yea!!!!!! :D
|
WooHoo!!! I like your Landlady..
|
good for you!! I'd send some snow - but, it won't be for awhile! stay cool, my dear!!:D

my cats are always thrilled when we turn off the AC. They are desert animals and like the heat, but if its going above 90 please provide cool dark places for them if it happens again.
Hooray for you, for not buying an AC you knew was going to be returned. its dishonest no matter how you shake it. Dont fall for it. Im sorry you dont get a private escape to a solo hotel night out. That would have been a great stress reliever, no? I am happy you have a land lord that cares, even in her own dark hour. Hang in there! |
