Oh Amazon, you're making this difficult. (Kindle related post)
I am such a gadget junkie, and Amazon is making it really difficult for me to resist.
They just announced the Kindle Fire (a tablet ereader, similar to the NookColor, selling for $199) and the new Kindle Touch ($99wifi only, $149 with 3g)...along with another Kindle that doesnt have a keyboard that's selling for $79 if you want ads, $109 ad-free. (they still have the Kindle 3, which is being renamed the Kindle Keyboard) I want the Kindle Fire and the Kindle Touch!! (if I get one, it'll be the Fire) Now I have to figure out if I should sell my Kobo and one of my Kindles so that I can justify getting another ereader. (I have a Kindle 2, a Kindle 3, a Kobo and an iPad) I may just end up using one of my Kindles and the Kobo as Christmas presents to my sister and b-in-law...not sure what to do yet. is it sad that I still want the NookColor too?? I am such a gadget junkie, and Amazon is apparently my gadget connection. |
My little Kindle 3 with wifi is just fine and dandy. Just as my Dell 2000 laptop is dandy. I don't need more, so I tell myself I don't want more..:D It's how I was raised.
Your Pop spoils you..:) |
I still want that Kindle Fire... (I am so addicted to gadgets...it's sad)
I'm probably going to be selling my Kobo and my Kindle 2, or giving them away to family members...depends on whether the people I want to gift them to want an ereader. My cellphone died this afternoon, so my dad and I just got back from "buying" Android phones. ("free" phone at the Sprint kiosk in Sam's Club...the $36 activation fee doesnt really make me think it was "free" tho) We cant go without phones here. My mom is starting to get a bit of dementia or something and so my dad and I pretty much have to be able to call each other. We try to always have someone with her. So, the "free" phone just took away some of the available money for the Kindle Fire that I want. I really would like to be one of the first to get the Fire, but maybe I will wait a few weeks/months before I get one (just in case it fails miserably when it gets released in November). See if my credit card points can accumulate some more so I can get an Amazon gift card and see how much change I can save in my Penny Cow bank. Maybe if I go to a Coinstar machine at the right time, I can get an Amazon card there too. It might be kind of fun to be able to buy a Kindle Fire from loose change that I save. (that's how I save up for Kindle books, I get Amazon gift cards from Coinstar when I cash in my loose change) I dont have to save up that much, I could probably get the new Kindle Touch with my loose change and credit card points right now, so I dont have far to go to be able to afford the Kindle Fire. I'd prefer the Fire over the Kindle Touch... Hopefully it wont take long to save up the rest. Might be interesting to see how quick my loose change accumulates. |
I was just checking them out online today. I don't have an ereader but am seriously thinking of getting one. The library now has books you can download. :) I have difficulty with the touch screens because of my fingers so the Kindle touch is out. I'm thinking of the Kindle Keyboard because it can hold twice as many books. Decisions, decisions.
|
I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire today :D!!!!! I am so excited, I think I might explode :).
|
I looked up the kindle fire pros and cons, and I like it. It's not really trying to compete with the Ipad or other android tablets.. It's doing it's own thing and seems to be focusing on a family type group.
Even though it's set to improve by mid 2012, at the 199.00 price, it's a good buy and Amazon has a lot of books, videos and movies to purchase and use. There is a limit, however, as to how many movies you can store at one time, as of now, If I didn't already have the Kindle 3, I'd consider the Fire.:) |

Unless I manage to convince my dad to buy it for me, I cant get the Fire for awhile. If I can sell my Kindle 2 and my Kobo reader for some decent money, I might be able to afford the Fire. But, I kind of like my little family of ereaders...I'd be sad to get rid of them, even tho I cant use them all at once. Maybe I'm a hoarder of ereaders? I almost panicked today. I was out with my parents, and was waiting for my dad. I was reading my Kindle 3 (which Amazon has renamed and they're now known as the "Kindle Keyboard") and it froze up...wouldnt do a thing. I rebooted and it wouldnt turn back on. I was talking to Kindle CS and just when they got on the phone with me, the Kindle rebooted and started working again. (darn! I might have convinced my dad to get me the Fire if my K3 died...) Crisis averted! Really, I think I'm going to be saving loose change and anytime I get change smaller than a $5, it'll be going in my change jar to be eventually turned into the Kindle Fire. I think that'll be kind of fun to do. |
My daughter is buying me a Kindle for my birthday but I've elected not to get the "Fire", even though at less than $200, it's really cheap to buy. There's been quite a bit of negative literature about it already so I chose to go with something tried and true. Sorry but I can't share your enthusiasm Erin.
Here's one of the articles I read about "Fire" http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011...naked+security |
Sheesh, Anne, thanks. I never even thought of the security risk. Of course, even browsing on my old laptop is a security risk, I guess.
|
I'm sure browsing on my new Android phone is a problem too. They've probably already noticed that I looked up some risque fan fiction sites on the internet before I even left the store with it.
Since I cant afford the Fire yet, I'm probably not going to be in the first group of people who buy it like I was when the Kindle 3 came out last year. I have to wait till I can afford it, and I'm kind of liking the idea of waiting, because I'll need a cover for it, and after the bad experience I had last year with the Amazon made cover they sold me (the connectors that held the cover on the Kindle fried my Kindle) I'm waiting for a 3rd party company to develop some covers. The third party covers are usually nicer anyways. Unless my dad wins the lottery before Xmas, I probably wont be getting the Fire till after New Years or later next spring. Hopefully that's enough time to get the beta testers (the people first in line for the Fire) to work out all the kinks. All of the sites I go to now on my current K3, my iPad and my home computers are probably being logged by someone somewhere. So, I'm not going to be surprised if Amazon is logging everything. Heck, Amazon is constantly already sending me suggestions for thing they think I want to buy based on books and other things I've looked at on their site. I wish it would stop suggesting some of the things it does, because it's usually junk that I was looking up for my dad, or a link I followed from somewhere that took me to a product page on Amazon that I didnt want to go to. |
I'm jumping on the band wagon early for entirely practical reasons. The husband has been extremely nice lately (he's terrified that he'll have to pay me support after we divorce) so I have to take advantage of this while I can :).
|
I was reading the thread about the senior discount and thought of Erin and her habit! She needs to save all the money she can to support this habit.
|
Went to get pizza tonight with my parents, and my dad said we needed two senior drinks and one "grownup" drink. The girl charged us for three senior drinks instead. (59 cents! instead a $1.29/drink) We got a deal!
Also went out for bagels this morning, my dad gave me the money to pay for the bagels for him so he could sit down, and when I was handing back the bills, I asked him if I could keep the coinage. (67 cents) My dad let me keep it. :D YAY! I'm reconsidering getting the Kindle Fire, and am looking at the Kindle Touch. I like both (want both!) but now I'm wondering which would be more useful to me. I hope that Amazon will start selling them at WalMart and Target, because I'd like to look at one of them before I buy another Kindle this time around. |
Erin I'm leaning toward the Kindle touch also. The reviews I read said it's very responsive so maybe I won't have difficulty. For the price difference between that and the Kindle, there are better features.
I do have a question and maybe you can answer it for me. What else besides downloading and reading books can you do on the Kindles? |
I havent seen the Kindle Touch yet, so I'm not sure what other features it'll have. That one has the touch screen, so you dont need to use buttons or a keyboard to do stuff. It'll have a keyboard built into the screen.
I know there are games that you can play on the Kindle. I have some solitaire games on mine, and you can download audiobooks from Audible to the Kindle. (never tried that before, but I think you can do it over Wifi) So, aside from reading books on them, you can listen to a book too. The Kindle Fire is going to be a tablet. Similar to an iPad, but it'll play Flash video, so probably a bit more useful than the iPad is for watching video online. The eInk Kindles (basically every Kindle but the Kindle Fire) can browse the internet with a very basic browser. Kind of klunky to use, but it's doable. The Kindle Fire, as far as I know, should be able to do most of what the iPad does, but is several hundred dollars cheaper. I think I want the Kindle Fire, but since I dont have the money to get one yet, I'm going to wait and see what others think about it before getting one. I'm either going to be getting the Kindle Fire, or the Kindle Touch. (I already have an iPad, so not sure if I'd use the Kindle Fire...it does look really cool tho!) |
Get the Galaxy 10.1 4G on Verizon and you'll have the best of all. It has a Kindle app and you'll always have the best service. I have one and I love it. It blows the rest away. :)

Where have you been and how are you, dear Wiz? |
I'd love a Galaxy, but not affordable to me at all. At least the Kindle Fire could be somewhat attainable to me if I'm good about saving my money. I can probably save up enough to get a Fire within the next 6 months if I'm a good girl and dont go nuts buying other stuff. (selling some of my other gadgets that I'm not using at all might get me there quicker.)
|
Thanks for the info Erin. I don't want anything like the Kindle Fire, definitely not an ipad (I could just use hubbies when he's at work if I did), and have been fighting an ereader for a while. Now I would like an ereader but want all the details so I make an informed choice. Still leaning toward the Kindle Touch. It take me forever to make decisions!!
|
I'm leaning towards the Kindle Touch too, even tho I would LOVE to have the Kindle Fire. I want both actually, but I wont be able to afford both, and since I already have an iPad, I'd probably do better getting the Touch...and the Touch is cheaper than the Fire.

I found a review for the most recent Kindle to be released. (pretty sure this is the $79 Kindle that I think is the only one of the new Kindles that are immediately available...think the others come out on Nov 15th) The $79 Kindle is available now, so people are starting to leave reviews of them.
I found this one on a Kindle forum I go to It's a pretty good review. Gave me a lot of information. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSCq9...ayer_embedded#! One of the things I was surprised to find out is that the $79 Kindle doesnt have an audio player, so no speakers...I guess that means no Text-to-speech either... (deal breaker for me...not getting the $79 Kindle) I had to go look up to see if the Kindle Touch has Text-To-Speech. It can play Audible files, so I'm assuming it has the TTS, but havent confirmed that. Kindle Keyboard (originally called Kindle 3) still has the TTS, but the Kindle Fire does NOT have TTS. So far, I'm glad I cant afford a new Kindle yet. I'm learning information that's helping me decide which one I might want to get. I may end up waiting till something happens to my current Kindle before I get another one. |

I'm working very hard, retail sales is tough! And working on my MBA too! I look forward to finishing my degree!

Wiz, would it take the place of a computer and Kindle? And can you make the print bigger?
 |

You can get a keyboard and dock it in the keyboard. The nice thing is, you can take the galaxy tab with you around the house and it's light weight so if you sit in your favorite chair it's light in your lap. It's good for web browsing and games. It's very easy to use for most things but if you need to compose long documents you will definitely want to consider the keyboard. You can zoom in on text but not as big as a large screen monitor, but then again, you can use it most anywhere, unlike your desktop computer and monitor. |
I have a bluetooth keyboard that my aunt gave me for my iPad, but I'm actually using that keyboard for my iMac computer. I havent had a problem typing on the iPad on screen keyboard.
Talked to my boyfriend tonight. The guy who hates Apple computers. The guy who picks on me for liking Apple products and my collection of Kindles wants to buy an iPhone when Sprint gets them this week (doh! if my cellphone had only died a week later, I'd have an iPhone and not an Android!) AND...he wants a Kindle Fire! Resistance is futile! He's been assimilated! :D |
If I were on a fixed income and not working for a tech company, I would scale down and be my normal cost-concious self. But since I sell these products, I own lots of them. I WILL however, always have a smart phone and tablet now that I know how convenient and fun they are! :) I remember how I used to say that I would go without groceries before I'd give up high speed internet. It's like that. I would never go back to a flip phone OR dial up internet. :D
Sorry for changing the topic but I wanted to 'splain myself. I really can relate to all of you in money matters. :grouphug: That said, there are lots of low priced tablets out there and the Kindle Fire looks pretty good but I would wait for it to be released and see what the user reviews are! |
I just got an actual smartphone. I had one before, but it was 3yrs old and basically was a StupidPhone compared to my new phone. (HTC Evo 4g. $24 at Sam's Club. Old phone killed itself earlier that day)
I dont ever want to go back to the old basic flip phones either. I'm having too much fun with my new one. It has a flashlight and can play music...and it makes phone calls too! (way better reception) of course, getting the new phone reduced my new Kindle budget by a bit. But, I had to have a new phone. Ewizabeth...I'm like you. I'd do without groceries to keep my internet on. |
If I am ever let go for being an expensive employee I will know how to keep my gadgets at a low cost. And I can advise the rest of you here how to do so as well. But it seems like you have a pretty good grasp on that already. :)
