Painful Numbness
My right hand has been numb for years. It feels like I have a big baseball glove on it all the time. But recently it's been very painful. It's so hard to explain to someone how something can be numb and hurt at the same time. It's especially bad at night. Just throbs and feels like my whole hand is swollen.....but it's not. It's traveled up my arm and right now stops about half way up. Right around my elbow. I hate taking meds and so far haven't taken anything stronger than Aleve for this. My hand is getting weaker, though, and I've noticed I really don't have any strength in it anymore. Can't even open a jar or turn a key with my right hand. And writing....forget it! I used to have such pretty handwriting. Now it looks like I'm trying to write with my toes. :o
I know there's nothing I can do about it......just whining a little I guess. :( |
I'd whine, too. Even with MS AND arthritis, I've been blessed to have "normal" use of my hands most of the time. Do you think it's MS-related?

I have the same thing, numbness and pain. Does the pain wake you up from sleep or is it keeping you from sleeping?

 So sorry your hand is now so painful. It's so hard to explain to others how my hands can be numb with pain. It can be very frustrating! At least here you'll find support and understanding. So whine away all you want - we're all hear to listen!

I am sorry for your pain, and I hear you. Mine is a bit different, but my right upper arm is numb and tingling and just aches like a tooth ache. It is so frustrating because I don't feel like I can do anything or the pain gets worse, goes to my neck and I end up with a migraine!

(((((Kelly)))))..With me, it's my left hand and getting slowly number. I also have pain as well. I guess the nerves are numb but the muscles can still be painful.
My right hand is just a little numb and no pain, so I'm thankful for that, since I am right handed. I find that doing hand exercises and stretching help the numbness and pain a little. I hope a little stretching & finger exercise helps you.. |
:hug: Kelly. I'm sorry! This sounds awful. I know you don't like meds, but I wonder if there is something your neuro can prescribe for you take at night? I hope it's a pseudo flare and that it passes soon.

I totally understand! I wish I could give you a big hug. I frequently go numb in various parts of my body, but I've been blessed that it usually goes away after a few hours. A few weeks back, while I was at school, I went numb from the shoulders down. They wheeled me out of class in an office chair, down a hallway full of people. I was mortified. My dad had to come in and half carry me out to the car.

I think every part of my body has been numb at one time or another. Fortunately, only my right hand/arm have remained permanently affected. Even when my legs and feet were numb I was still able to walk. It just felt like both my legs had fallen asleep.....that pins and needles sensation. It did make it difficult to gauge whether or not my feet were firmly on the ground or not.
