OT -- I took my 'baby' Lilo to the Vet this morning
I brought Lilo in to my Vet to have my baby spayed. I brought her in at eight, and she will be staying overnight. I didn't anticipate any problems, as I have had many animals spayed, and some neutered, in the past.
The house is quiet and I miss her already :( . Then, about an hour ago, I received a call from the Vet. All of her pre-anesthesia testing went well, but Lilo had vomited twice since she has been there, and they found pieces of a green plastic mixed in with the bile. The Vet wondered if I knew what she had eaten. I looked around my bedroom and found a green, latex fish, one of her toys. Problem was, the back end was missing . I had seen her chewing on this toy days ago, but what she normally does is spit the pieces out (just like she does when she rips the cover off of a tennis ball - I fiind pieces everywhere!). Long story short, she is still going to have the surgery, but the Vet said she is going to make the incision longer than usual so that she can check her stomach to make sure she isn't full of little green latex pieces :p. Now, I am a bit more concerned than usual about my baby. The Vet said she will call me when the surgery is over and let me know how things went. I will keep you posted. Please say a little prayer for my girl. Jacquie, holding my breath a bit :o |
I suggest you ask for an estimate....
Surgery I have discovered for my own cat just this week for cutting into the intestine to remove a tumor was going to be $3600-5000..... $60 a minute! + all the other costs of anesthesia, etc. So do call back and ask what to expect cost wise. I am sorry your beloved pet is sick... we have been thru a nightmare with this cancer thing for our cat Oreo. Testing alone so far has been $2000! So I cancelled the surgery, and we are letting her enjoy the last few months without more pain and anguish. So far she seems normal in fact. It will be euthanasia for us very soon (2nd opinion vet said 2 months without and 5 months with surgery). Good luck! |

Call. But lots of prayers for both of you. Let us know. :circlelove: |
Sendin prayers.
And :grouphug::hug:s to you. Man cant even type some of my keys arent (typin.) donna |
Thanks for your concern
I received an estimate for the surgery in writing before I left her this morning, so I'm not too worried about the cost.
Now the good news!! The Vet called a little while ago. Lilo was just waking up from surgery, was doing well and was on pain meds. The Vet told me that poor Lilo threw up two more times before being put under, but by the fourth time, it was just bile. She also said that she simply made the incision a bit longer than usual, and looked around while she was in there, and there was no more latex anywhere in her stomach or intestines. The surgery went well, and I will be able to pick her up tomorrow afternoon. She will be sent home with some pain meds (she also had to have a few baby teeth removed). I will need to feed her soft foods for a few days due to her mouth being sore. My poor baby :heartthrob: |
Yep, we always ot meds for te dos.
sorry, about spellin. Keyboard. Donna:grouphug::hug: |
IMO alot of animals throw up from the anesthetic. This is why you need to fast them, before surgery.
Keep this in mind.... Your estimate was only for a spay. If they had to open her stomach or intestines, that would be EXTRA... Vets today have major hidden costs. Typically a gastrectomy (opening the stomach) or an intestinal resection... cutting the bowel and removing something and stitching it back up... starts at $3000! (or more) depending on the length of time it takes, at $60 a minute. Doody on Pets, had dental floss removed from her cat's intestines not too long ago... $3000. If your dog swallows junk, chews toys too much, watch like a hawk. Because it could turn into a nightmare for you and the poor critter! I am so glad it turned out well. Not all of these situations do. |
Hi Jacquie,
sorry i'm late catching up on this! I'm glad to hear everything went well though!:hug::hug: ~ waves ~ |
I believe lilo vomited before time. So it was different.
Tryin to type wit out usin two keys is very difficult. So if you dont understand its reason. Donna |
Yes, Donna, you're right. She threw up before surgery. Could have been nerves or maybe the latex in her tummy started to become an issue. Either way, I will certainly will watch her more closely when she is chewing on her toys!
Going to bed now. It's going to be weird without Lilo in bed with us. She's slept in my bed from the first night :o. |
Such great news!
Sleeping tomorrow night will sure be easier, I know, having your baby back home.
mrsD's experience & those she reports unfortunately align with my all-too-unpleasant ones. Let's hope your vet is one of the very rare ones. |
Great news all around!
I finally got to pick Lilo up this afternoon. Poor thing. She is still on pain meds (non-narcotic) and has spent akk the time she's been home either sleeping or just lying next to me with her eyes open. The told me that she didn't want to eat or potty the whole time she was there, but when I got her outside on the leash and into the grass, she finally pee'd. She still hasn't eaten or pottied again, but she did drink some water. She'll be fine, but not sure where she will sleep tonite. I'm thinking in her crate or in her bed right next to me. I don't think it's a good idea for her to sleep on our bed like she normally does. :o
On another good note, I am bringing my DH to the pdoc, finally, tomorrow afternoon. I am hopeful that things will change. Another problem her has been having for the last several weeks is that he doesn't wake up when he has to pee, thereby wetting himself and sometimes even the bed. This despite the fact that he is wearing Men's Depends :( . I can't begin to count how many times I have had to change the sheets...and my index finger on my right hand is very swollen and I can't bend it. It's so much bigger than my left one. Wondering if it could be arthritis? Has anyone else had a similar experience and, if so, did any treatment besides time, help???? Thanks in advance! Gotta go put the waterproof cover and then the sheets back on the bed again...:Speechless: |
glad that your puppy is home, sorry to hear about your hubby not waking up at night, another indicator that he is over medicated...but how old is he?
please be sure and bring that aspect up to the pdoc. thanks for the update. ((((HUGS))))) bizi I don't have a clue about your thumb? people can get a gout attack anywhere on your body...could that be that? |
Just what I thought, too, bizi about the meds for DH; I am making a list of the issues he has been having. As for me, I was thinking of gout, too. Good news is I picked up a script of Mobic, an anti-inflamatory, and my finger feels better tonight.
BTW, the Vet bill was only $390. She didn't charge any extra for the 'looking around' the stomach and intestines for any stray foreign objects. I really appreciated that. |
Oh Jacquie I don't even know where to start to let you know how much cyber support I am sending. I am so glad the surgery went well, as I read I had my own eater going after plastic. Now the added stress for your dh, did he have problems in patient or is this new? I know there is a med to add, but he is going through the balancing act of meds now.
My prayers and heart are with you. I know we keep saying God gives the extra challenges to strong women like us, but I still ask him to consider taking away an old issue when taking on a new one. Love and hugs, di MrsD I am sorry to hear how ill your little furry friend is. Having lost three in the last two years it is so difficult. They love us so unconditional and add a whole new aspect to our lives with companionship and love. Hugs to you  Di |
Hello MrsD,
I also wanted to add my condolences to the others. Hoping you enjoy the last few months with your furry friend. Donna:grouphug: |
Thank you for the comments. She still looks good and is eating and enjoying her cat activities. Getting some of the meds which are bitter into her however, is a battle. But I think I finally found a solution...transdermal gel.

Mrs D.
We used Peanut Butter for our girl Piggy last time. She loved it. Made live getting tat med easier. Donna:grouphug::hug: |

Yea! for your improving finger. Boo-hiss for pdoc if over-medicating is to blame for having poor DH & you in the bed-wetting doldrums. At least that ought to be a fairly easy fix, I hope. |
Dear Jacquie,
I hope that the pdoc visit went well. Keep up your tracking of meds, symptoms, and side effects for your DH. If you finger problems is caused by osteoarthritis, it might improve with some dietary changes like eliminating milk. M |
