Regular keyboard or laptop keyboard??
If laptop there are ways to clean them - but I'd suggest doing a search for that info and your laptop brand name.

Regular keyboard..
Sometime crud falls down between the keys..
turn it upside down and tap on the back, shake it side to side and see what comes out.

If a sticky liquid might have gotten in there then a more though cleaning is needed.

many of the newer keyboards can be rinsed out but have to get dry before using again.
I keep a spare keyboard for those times...and just in case it doesn't help at all.

Dmom3005 10-11-2011 02:29 PM

Laptop, But Im not sure its a sticky key problem.

It seems to be connected to sometin else.

Weird as tat sounds.

did all of the trouble-keys start doing this at the exact same time? or was it gradual, first one, then another...etc. the sometimes they work sometimes they don't suggests something under the keycap preventing it from being pressed properly... something that can move... like a crumb or sand...

did anyone eat crackers, cookies, a sandwich etc.... at the computer recently, or does anyone have a habit of doing that?

---------------------------

i'd try compressed air. it comes in a can like WD40 with the skinny straw to spray around the 'offending' keys. you should be able to get it in a store that sells computers, or computer accessories... just ask.

many of the keytops snap on and off at least partially also, but i don't recommend you try that unless you can tell what you're doing - the risk is the keytop will never sit back in place properly again.

Dmom3005 10-11-2011 06:10 PM

Yes I do eat close to my computer. But I dont find food around keys.

But will continue lookin.

And it came to all keys at once.

donna:hug::grouphug:

waves 10-11-2011 06:23 PM

There may have been a recent, specific "food incident" then.

a few sprays of crumbs from taking a bite of sandwich, cookies or crackers, closer than usual...

as an experiment you can try just gently blowing (purse lips tight to do this) under JUST ONE of the problem keys to see what happens. if it is a crumb, the problem might go away... or show up on an adjacent key instead, either way you get a clue.

don't blow on your whole keyboard though. compressed air is best because it does not contain moisture like our breath. Also that nice skinny straw lets you really take aim.

waves 10-11-2011 06:27 PM

just saw your post to Jacquie...

wait

it's only TWO keys?

g and h, right?

they are adjacent.

look between them. you may just have ONE stupid crumb or somethin in there.

Dmom3005 10-11-2011 06:48 PM

No its more keys,

waves 10-12-2011 10:28 AM

Donna,

well you can type your posts in email, spell check it there, select and copy the entire text, and then paste it into the reply box here.

but first, tell me something. i see that whenever there would be a g or h inside a word, there is a space instead.

eg: 't e ot er' 'the other'

what i want to know is, ARE YOU TYPING THAT SPACE MANUALLY, or does it get put in there "by itself" when the not-working key is pressed? (i hope the answer is you are putting it in.....)

keyboard

Maybe you should buy a can of air [think that is what it's called] it cleans the keyboard, between the keys by using high pressure air.

Dmom3005 10-13-2011 03:11 PM

Just need to et to town.

Still needin to .

Okay anyone know anything else that might help my computer keys. The air for computer I got didn’t work or help.

Donna

waves 10-17-2011 05:15 PM

if it's not dirt Donna, the only other thing i can think of is that the circuitry is slowly detaching.... you mentioned earlier there was a pattern...

i'd recommend taking it to a repair shop at this point - but don't leave it there. ask:

1. how much it will cost JUST to open it up and diagnose the problem?

2. what might be the range of repair cost, based on possible problems?

some repairs - especially to laptops - are just not worth it, but it depends on what is wrong. it might be cheaper to buy another one.

how old is your laptop anyway?

Dmom3005 10-17-2011 05:33 PM

This is the work one. So I will have to send it back to home office. Was hoping not too have too.

But its about 3 if t at years old.

Donna

waves 10-17-2011 05:50 PM

wow. that's pretty young.

well, i believe we've excluded superficial causes - you said no spills (stickyness) and no dirt/crumbs etc (air didn't help). i assume(?) you jetted the air, using the straw, directly between the problem keys. i suggested that because it was the easy thing to try, and pretty cheap. but the fact that you said it happened suddenly and also that you saw a "pattern" did sound suspicious to me that it could be internal... question of connections.

probably at this point it will have to be taken apart to know what is wrong. but someone else might know of some other diagnostic tricks you can try... so it maybe worth asking.

but before you ship it off into lululand, see if someone else might have some ideas... if you haven't posted on the computer forum, post there. someone more hardware savvy (i'm not very) may be able to help - at least give you an idea what sorts of problems you could be looking at. you could also just stop into a computer repair store, tell them the make and model and the problem you are having. you should draw like a map of what keys are not working and take that with you. they might go "aha" ...

oh. one more thing you could try. google using as keywords the
the make, model, model of your computer and "keyboard problems"

eg:

Compaq P450 "keyboard problems"

might turn up something if it is a common defect. well those are the dregs of my ideas... sorry, Donna. (((hugs)))

Donna - you may be able to buy a keyboard that might work with your laptop which would be cheaper than a wireless one (they even sell keyboards for the iPad that you plug in - probably with a USB connection. Check with a local office store like Staples, Office Max, etc.

Your posts are legible but challenging to read sometimes :D.

I appreciate the chuckles, tho I realize that it's not at all funny to you .

Dmom3005 10-18-2011 07:53 AM

Did you know that the g and the h & gh, are three off the most irritating letters or combos to need. I am going to ask permission to find out about a new keyboard today. But I hate the fact I will lose the computer for a couple of weeks probably. Of just found out, we ave some one new doing technical things . And maybe I can get a different laptop till its fixed. Yippee. But will et a call from person and if I can be walked through how to fix even better.

That's great news, Donna! A talk-thru fix would be fantastic but, short of that, a loaner would sure make things easier on you. Wow, can you believe? A light at the end of your keyboard tunnel? :D:grouphug:

Dmom3005 10-25-2011 10:37 AM

I never had time after talking to the tech to get back and say.

Not even 5 minutes explaining the problem. And his comment,
sorry but I can't do this over the phone. I told him, Thats okay,
I tried to tell my supervisor that.

But she wanted to make sure, there wasn't something you could
try. His next comment, was he was going to call them, and say.

Donna, needs to send her laptop to South Bend. I can't do anything
for it there. So I got a email on Thursday late.

Donna, your laptop is unfixable there. So send it to South Bend as soon
as possible. And insure it for $1000.00.

Well I didn't get it sent till today. Had to go do some buying and had appts.
Till today, and Derrick was on Fall break so off it went this morning.

I've gotten two of the sites I need, sent to me to use. And am waiting to
add at least one more. But so far all are helping as much as possible.

And either a new laptop, or a USB will be on its way with my information.

Wow, this is a pain, I can't get to my calendar.

Donna:grouphug:

BlueCarGal 10-25-2011 11:08 AM

I'm so sorry, Donna, but I'm happy for you that there's a loner on the way with your information onboard. What a relief when it gets to you!

Dmom3005 10-25-2011 12:53 PM

My supervisor sent me my November Calendar.

That is what I mainly needed.

I know this week so.

Donna:grouphug:

Pamster 10-25-2011 02:44 PM

Wow you have had some trouble with that laptop all righty, Hope they get the loaner out to you soon! At least you got your Nov calender that helps a lot I am sure. :D Keep us posted Donna! :D

Dmom3005 10-25-2011 05:11 PM

Oh it helps so much. I can know do most things I need.

My biggest problem on this computer is it hurts to hit the thing that makes
the screen go up and down.

Now to buy a mouse.
